My sister was in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore".
She was an extra sitting in a booth at the back of a dimly lit bar. You can almost make out that there is actually someone there.

Degenerate gambler yes, HOF material, yes...as a player...as do the roids players. There have been many eras of baseball, deadball, ect, put an atretic on their plaques, but they should be in there...

I served in an Army Reserve unit with Pete Rose, Tommy Helms, and Johnny Bench. I knew Bench fairly well; he used to serve me breakfast (company cook) and was a regular guy. I never saw either of the other two at a meeting or summer camp. Though to be fair it was my understanding both came in and worked in the office during the week when the Reds were at home.
I was listening to an interview of someone who wrote a book about Pete and supposedly had extensive first hand interviews with him and MLB officials. His claim was if Pete had come clean on his gambling issues immediately he would have been kicked out of baseball for a year or so then be reinstated, offered a position with the MLB or a team and long since been in the HOF. Sad!

Me three. I still follow the show (I've watched it since before The Pawn), and I was aware of Drake's unexplained absence in the past few months, and his thinness when he returned. Still, this is a sad day. I see that his last show aired Sept 9. The show tapes about 7 months in advance, so it must have been a tough final six month for Drake and his family.
He's my age. Seeing a lot of that.

Saw a cute story about Kristofferson from when he played junior college football at Pomona or someplace. His coach was talking about him, saying he wasn't that big, and he wasn't that strong, and actually he wasn't very fast. Then he thought for a minute and said, "Kris is a football player due to the will of Kris Kristofferson, not due to the will of God."
So he was a fairly determined fellow, even back then.

I don't see this mentioned anywhere upthread. This was reported in early September.

I heard the death toll now stands at 213 this morning.
Speaking of hurricanes and other natural disasters, and the comments tfg made earlier this week about Biden admin withholding aid from R states, this is as good a place to plant this as anywhere:

Progeria, also called Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, is caused by a tiny genetic mutation that leads to rapid aging in children. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the condition is always fatal and death most often occurs as a result of a heart attack or stroke.

Lilly Ledbetter, the activist who inspired Fair Pay Act, dies at 86
Chandelis Duster
October 14, 20243:59 PM ET
Lilly Ledbetter, a women’s equality activist whose fight for pay equity led to passage of the monumental Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, died Saturday. She was 86.
Ledbetter's death was confirmed on Monday by Jodi Solomon, her speaking manager.
"She was fierce, she was a crusader and just a really good friend. She will be missed a lot," Solomon told NPR.
Born in Jacksonville, Ala., Ledbetter was hired as a supervisor at a Goodyear tire plant in Gadsden, Ala., in 1979. Years later, she discovered through an anonymous note left in her mailbox that she was receiving less pay than her male co-workers who worked the same position.
"When I saw that, it took my breath away. I felt humiliated. I felt degraded," Ledbetter recalled in an interview with NPR in 2009. "I had to sort of get my composure back to go ahead to perform my job and then, the first day off, I went to Birmingham, Ala., and filed a charge with the EEOC."
That action in 1998 was the beginning of a 10-year legal fight for Ledbetter toward equity.
