The House majority leader is seen as the front-runner in the fresh race for speaker, and has begun making phone calls seeking support from his GOP colleagues, sources said.

Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who became a national figure after he survived a brutal assassination attempt during a congressional baseball practice, announced Wednesday he will seek to be the next House speaker.

And Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who led the effort to overthrow McCarthy, has repeatedly put Scalise’s name forward, saying after Tuesday’s stunning vote that the majority leader is “the type of person that I could see myself supporting.”

Asked about Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, officially jumping into the speaker's race Wednesday, Scalise replied: "I'm sure a lot of people are going to look at this, as they should. This is really important that we get this right."

Scalise’s moves are already being met with some backlash. One member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus suggested that Scalise would be no different than McCarthy as speaker.

Kevin McCarthy was behind interim Speaker Patrick McHenry’s move to kick former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Majority Leader Steny Hoyer out of their office spaces, two Republican sources told CNN.

GOP Rep. Garret Graves told reporters on Wednesday that McCarthy is getting the office that McHenry has ordered her to vacate.

“Look the deal is that the office that Pelosi is in right now is the office of the preceding speaker. Speaker Pelosi and other Democrats determined that they wanted a new … speaker, and it’s Kevin McCarthy. So, he’s getting the office,” he said.

Sources close to Pelosi and Hoyer say it was retaliation for Democrats siding against McCarthy in voting to vacate the speaker’s chair Tuesday. The unofficial offices are located near the House floor.

House Majority Leader Scalise (R-La.), House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Republican Study Committee Chairman Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) would participate in the event on Monday at 6 p.m. EST.

The televised forum reflects the highly unusual nature of the race to replace McCarthy — and the intense public interest it is garnering. Though it will be televised nationally, the only people who may cast a ballot for Speaker are members of the House.
