His competitors would not be Twitter or Facebook but Parler, Telegraph, and Gab. He does not even have the cash to upfront a new social media from scratch (Twitter and Facebook did not start with 10s of millions of users). Michael Sherwin, the departing acting US attorney for the District of Columbia, confirmed that the former president is still under investigation over the 6 January putsch in an interview with CBS 60 Minutes on Sunday.

I suspect that is true. To get the kind of adulation that his ego requires, he needs a platform with 10,000,000 users, not 10,000. A 10M user platform will be quite expensive and difficult to set up. I 10K user platform won't get by on $50,000 per month.

If he is going to partner with anyone, it will probably be a social media company (likely with a bit of state backing) that has a service already and is looking for some branding to get itself noticed. Or in the case of something quietly state backed, someone willing to pay in order to keep access to trump's base. In the case of a new social media platform, it would have to be someone willing and able to spend the tens, if not hundreds of millions of dollars to build and promote a world-class platform, to compete with FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram et al. I don't see anyone like that on the horizon. The Mercers may be trying to revive Parler, but it apparently isn't going too well.
Would anyone spending that kind of money today be willing to spend another few million and a cut of the take, simply to put Trump's name on it?
