I am so loving hearing all the soundbites from our governor. He would make a great vice president. But you're right. He would not be Harris' best choice to help the Democrats win.
But at least we know Harris is smarter than to end up with a Vance.

I agree with those who say that picking a politician from a state is not any guarantee that the ticket will carry that state, and even though Cooper is pretty popular in North Carolina (even among Republicans, except the MAGAts), that's not proof that he and Harris would win the state, much less any other Southern state.
'Course, same goes for Shapiro - picking him is no guarantee that Harris will win Pennsylvania, or any other northeastern state. In fact, there is an internal issue in the Democratic Party concerning Shapiro: a candidate for statewide office accused him of improper behavior this week, after a subordinate was sexually harassing women, and suggested he'd have a hard time being second in importance to a woman.
I've been picking Cooper because he's my homeboy but it's mostly tongue-in-cheek, I have spent whole minutes of my life exchanging greetings with that man. He's the only candy date with whom I have personally shaken hands, on half a dozen occasions. But he'd be a terrible pick.
I think it's time to pick a VP, not for what state they'll carry, but for rounding out the skillset of the ticket. Ms. Harris is a lawyer and a prosecutor who won statewide election to be Attorney General - twice. Her VP should be a non-lawyer and in particular a non-prosecutor, and Cooper was Attorney General, elected statewide here for like a dozen years. He's also the oldest of the group.
Following my own advice, I am supporting Mark Kelly, the astronaut. Perfect for rounding out the ticket, and he can breathe his own kind of excitement into the campaign.
But for whatever reason, the Harris campaign hasn't reached out to me for advice quite yet. They're probably waiting until they get in real trouble, or just hoping they never have to call me.

I've enjoyed getting to know him too. He'll be great and an asset to the Dems no matter where he is. Glad to meet him.MN-Skeptic wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2024 4:22 pmI am so loving hearing all the soundbites from our governor. He would make a great vice president. But you're right. Biden was polling "good enough" in Pennsylvania (and Michigan, and Wisconsin). As in, he was doing well in the two major metropolitan areas and picking up just enough of Pennsyltucky. While those three states technically were toss-ups, they were barely so.
(And this is unsurprising, given Biden was an old white dude and basically a local.)
Harris has a bit more of a climb, but it is definitely within reach. (Too also: necessary, unless Georgia or North Carolina come into play.) So I expect a lot of attention to be given to Pennsylvania in the coming months.

I wouldn't take Pennsyltucky for granted. Also, can we get rid of the electoral college, thank you very much.

Unless there's a constitutional convention; it is baked in because an amendment to abolish it wouldn't be ratified. (Ditto with the NPVIC; it'll never get a sufficient number of states to join.)
Thanks, Obama Framers.

Here's an idea - give D.C. a U.S. Representative, and combine North Dakota and South Dakota into one state... Dakota.bob wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2024 10:27 pmOff TopicI wish.pipistrelle wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2024 10:20 pmAlso, can we get rid of the electoral college, thank you very much.

The Dakotan Lawyers' Full Employment Act (for all nine of them)! I think the only semi-realistic answer to DC's lack of representation is to count its citizens as part of Maryland, for Congress (and Electoral College) purposes. It would likely have the real-world effect only of giving Maryland another representative. (Mayhaps at the expense of California.)

As in most maps shown in red and blue, more people in PA live in the blue areas than the red. The red parts are the mountains and farms.

I must admit, I'd wait to see if FJT tries to "top" it by replacing Vance on the ticket with, like, Kid Rock or something.

"For completeness," Swift is ineligible.* But she's a Pennsylvania native.
* Vice President Swift be eligible by January 20, 2025.

The top 2 candidates are Kelly and Shapiro. If I were to tell you that VP Harris picks the one with the Jewish wife, do you know what that does to the choices?

: Gov. Roy Cooper of NC has withdrawn from Vice President Kamala Harris's running mate sweepstakes
Roy Cooper Is Said to Withdraw From Harris’s Vice-Presidential Field
Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina, who has been seen as a leading contender to become Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, has informed her team that he has withdrawn from the vice-presidential sweepstakes, according to two people briefed on the matter.
Mr. Cooper, who previously served as chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, was believed to be among the half-dozen top candidates to join Ms. Harris on the Democratic ticket.
It was not immediately clear why he had taken himself out of consideration. A spokesman for the Harris campaign declined to comment, as did a spokesman for Mr. Cooper.

https://www.politico.com/news/2024/07/3 ... a-00171999Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to announce her running mate by Tuesday, when she will hold her first rally with her pick in Philadelphia.
The two will barnstorm cities in seven swing states in four days. In addition to Philadelphia, they’ll hit western Wisconsin, Detroit, Raleigh, Savannah, Phoenix and Las Vegas.
...
A Harris campaign aide cautioned against reading too much into the first city chosen for the tour.
I think it could be Beshear. Interesting they are going into Raleigh and Savannah.

Cooper is 67. I suppose they want someone younger.
