We have a groundhog!

It is staying under the cottage to our left and comes out to our front yard to dine.

We have them here. They live in dens. They burrow into the hillside and undermine the foundation. We spent $60K on repairing foundation damage caused (in part, but not entirely) by groundhogs.

We consider them dangerous pests. Our grandsons take them out with .22 rifles when they come to visit. We have thousands on our 18 acres; we only cull the ones near the house and the cabin.

Bacteria Scare Closes 55 LI Beaches: SC Health Dept.
Suffolk County health officials have closed 55 Long Island beaches for bathing due to an advisory following heavy rain.

https://patch.com/new-york/northfork/s/ ... aign=alert
Fifty-five Long Island beaches are closed for swimming after the Suffolk County Health Department issued an advisory on Thursday following heavy rainfall.

Because the beaches are located in parts of Long Island heavily impacted by stormwater runoff, the health department closed the beaches from swimming due to potentially high levels of bacteria in the water, officials said.

Health officials recommend that beachgoers do not swim or have contact with the water at beaches under advisory until they've been flushed by two successive tidal cycles at least 24 hours after the rain has ended.

Therefore, the advisory is set to be lifted on Saturday, June 8, at midnight unless further testing reveals that elevated bacteria levels remain.

At the end of May, Patch reported on the reopening of 63 Long Island beaches that had also closed to swimming due to high levels of bacteria following heavy rains.

On this 80th anniversary of D Day I note that the Cape Henlopen, one of the ferries that now connects the North Fork with New London CT, was originally built as the USS LST 510 which landed vehicles, troops and supplies on the Normandy beaches on D Day and for 3 months thereafter while also taking wounded to England on the return trips. It is one of only a very few D Day ships still in use.

I have crossed LI Sound on the Cape Henlopen many times. There is an interesting D Day museum on that ferry.

Saturday-

Mowers.

Mrs. V's cousin who lives on the Circle is getting his roof shingled.

Dogs to the west are barking.

I yearn for the sounds of silence. ;)

Sunday. Rainy earlier. Sun came out about 30 minutes ago.

So now one of our neighbors decides is a good time to mow the Circle.

The mowers are done for the weekend.

Just one dog barking to the west.

I can hear the traffic on Main Road in the distance.

Monday, Monday......

So, this afternoon the guy who mows the two cottages owned by Mrs.V's cousin from the DC area is mowing both lawns.

He does not have a commercial size mower.

He is also our handyman so we have to be nice to him. ;)

My new Toro ICE push mower is almost whisper quiet. My neighbors don't have to yell to get my attention at 6am anymore.

My push mower is a Stihl electric mower (we also have Stihl electric chainsaw, leaf blower, and trimmer). They’re very quiet.

We have a GreenWorks riding mower, but I’m afraid of it; I feel too unstable. I’d rather use the push mower - if I feel like I’m losing control of it, all I have to do is let go.

We don’t have that much lawn. I mow once a week - One week front, next week back. We’re not getting much rain (again), so I don’t have to mow as often.

So,

Mrs V rejoined the No Doubt World Famous Monday Night Band (founded 1946) several weeks ago. At their last concert they had 8 flutes and 1 piccolo.

At the next 3 rehearsals they had 1 piccolo and 3 flutes. This past Monday they had 1 piccolo and 1 flute (Mrs.V). So with just one more rehearsal before their next concert Mrs. V may be the only flute. :o

This is not a small band. They have 10 trumpets, 8 saxes, 15 clarinets, etc.

Where have the North Fork's flutes gone?

Today was dentist day for us.

I wish that the rest of my body was in as good shape as my teeth. ;)

Then we went to our favorite local restaurant for lunch. Mrs. V has been going there since before she was born.
