Big Boy the big bobcat and some questions answered

Living with a rescued pet bobcat since 2014
2021 28 Jan

This video was during bobcat mating season. He tries to assert dominance every year during February and March. I am not being mean to him. He's 50 lbs. I HAVE to maintain my alpha status. Or he would be totally out of control.

This is what I guess cats do when they know mom and dad are not home. Stormy already managed to get up on a 45-degree sloped stainless steel range hood. Stormy is calculating if the leap to the top of the cabinets is doable. Does Stormy succeed or abandon the mission?

It depends on what Stormy sees atop the cabinet. Is it worth the risk?

I think it's wonderful to have a cat named after my girl Stormy Daniels. And now we see that she's a natural on camera, and nekkid as a jaybird, with a, umm ... well-developed chest.

Long intro. I promise there’s a cat.

Last night W2 and I went to the very funny Judge John Hodgman show in Portland, ME. Packed theater full of all ages of Mainers wearing LLBean outerwear as outside temperature were in the mid 30s. Great show. Live jazz pre-show and during intervals. Plenty of Maine humor from Hodgman, who is a seasonal resident and married to a true Mainer. (He wrote Vacationland about his experiences.)

The show is recorded live for Hodgman’s podcast. The format is Live Justice (one case), Instant Justice, as simpler many cases as they can get into 15 minutes (3), then Mob Justice, lights up and cases from the audience. All hilariously ad-libbed.

So the cat story. The first case was a couple of recent residents with a wandering black cat named Salem Meowsachusetts. Salem is a friendly and adventurous outdoor cat in an urban center. (Boos from crowd.) Salem wanders the city and concerned tourists and residents often react by capturing Salem and calling the number on his collar — a NJ number as Salem’s father is a transplant. (The number leads people to think the cat is very far from home.) The guy then rushes over to pick up the cat. However, the catfather sometimes travels for work or is surfing, so often isn’t instantly available to answer calls.

Salem’s mom wants to have a collar that says “outside cat” and a tag with her MA number. She also wants to teach the catfather to deal with callers by saying “no worries, Salem is street-smart and will come home for supper.” (Many boos.)

Hilarious recountings of Salem’s adventures. The curate of a local church once called to say a black cat was laying on the altar and mass was about to start. When the catfather arrived to pick up Salem, the cat was busy wandering the pews getting pets from the congregation. Alas, no signs of demonic activity. Another example was security footage of Salem in Maine Medical Center stalking the halls and trying to get pets from unsuspecting medical personnel. (Hodgman compared the footage to Rep. Hawley on Jan 6 running in the halls.)

After much witty banter, the Judged ruled that Salem shouldn’t get an “outside cat” collar as that would likely result in locals keeping the cat for its own good. Also, the couple should get a local number that rings to both phones with a distinctive ring so catmother can pick up when she knows catfather is away or doesn’t answer on first couple of rings. Much applause.

Not mentioned: Salem’s neighborhood is already devoid of actual birds. We live adjacent to that neighborhood. The only birds that ever appear in the Merlin App are seagulls. Also, I think we’ve seen Salem a few times.

Paying the cat tax: Tricksy sez “I’z hiding. No one can sees me.”

That tunnel that Tricksey is hiding her head in looks like Tulips tunnel. She likes to run into it from across the room because then it slides with her inside. She's a goofy kitty sometimes.
