Judge outlines how individual jurors will be questioned
https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/ ... index.html
Judge Juan Merchan said he has changed his mind on how they will question individual jurors.
The judge said if they are going to speak to an individual juror, they will clear the courtroom of all the other jurors and send them back to the general room.
The judge said he's doing this so the juror does not feel intimidated speaking in front of a full courtroom. The juror would then answer questions from the podium with the judge, attorneys, Trump and some members of the press in the room.
Trump's attorney, however, is pushing back. The judge said the side room is designed to hold 12 people "and we are well over that number."
"We want to know who we’re getting on this jury. Anything we do discouraging jurors from being 100% open, kind of cuts against that," Merchan says, explaining his concern about having jurors in front of so many people.
That's pretty unusual. Normally what I've seen is when a juror doesn't wish to answer a question in front of all the other jurors and others in the courtroom, the judge and attorneys would leave the courtroom and go to a jury room or judge's chambers to speak with the juror.
Seems ridiculous to have the rest of the panel leave and come back, but it's his courtroom.
That’s how we did it in the military, but we seldom had the number of potential jurors and were seldom in the national spotlight.
ETA: Our jurors were always officers and senior enlisted - folks who wouldn’t dare to suggest they were too intimidated to answer any questions in open court. Which led to a different set of problems for the defense - I often felt the jurors would lie in public rather than tell the truth in private - but there’s no way to prove that.

Donald Trump's lawyers told the court that former president changed his mind about wanting to be at sidebars.
He signed a form waiving his right to do so and confirmed that audibly to Judge Juan Merchan answering, "yes."

I'm seeing tweets about Trump closing his eyes right after court has started, but I agree with the tweeter who's skeptical at this point that Trump is really dozing. Personally, I firmly believe he will doze off in the afternoon. The trouble with pretending that you're asleep... it does tend to put one to sleep. Trump is not an actor. The reporters will be able to spot the difference. Drool on your chin is a sure sign.

This is not surprising, as sidebars tend to be about objections. So they're "boring" and the defendant can't participate anyway.
Having said that, sidebars about juror selection is one of the times that I could see the defendant's presence being useful. There's usually a lot of discussion about facts (what a prospective juror said, how a juror said it, etc.) and less about the law. And an observant defendant might have seen something that everyone else missed. (Not that I consider this defendant to be observant.)

Well, they are in a bind. They could keep him awake with Stimulants. The snag is that stimulants are not compatible with a situation where he has to sit down, sit still, and shut up. Plus they don't last all day, so they would have to repeat the dose at lunch time.
If they don't, Sniffing Booty will fall asleep.
Besides, in a situation where the Narcissist is in a situation which he cannot make about himself or Control, I imagine that they would tend to collapse in on themselves and shut down.

I've been watching excellent coverage on twitter by @TylerMcBrien. The first six jurors have been chosen.
The video is disabled, but we hear Merchan has welcomed the jurors back in, and he asks them to listen for their number because this time it'll be a little different.
"This will be your permanent seat for the duration of the trial," he says.

To recap where we are now:
Six jurors have been seated on the jury.
By the end of jury selection, the jury will have 12 members, as well as alternatives.
Judge Juan Merchan said he thinks there will be six alternatives, but they could land on a different number, if needed.
Donald Trump's team has used six of his 10 preemptive challenges.
The district attorney's office has used four of its 10 challenges.

There is seriously far, far too much identifying information about prospective jurors, several of whom are now empaneled, coming out in the press. With a commercial database subscription and linkedin, I imagine it’d be trivial to create short lists or identify them outright.
