On my bingo card, I have "surrenders to pre-trial detainment" instead of giving-up his sugar daddies.

I wonder if the House will now censure Santos.

Nope.

Good question. And why would he be so fearful of their names getting released? :confuzzled:

MSNBC had on the dude who has been covering Santos locally for years.

He says the relationships between the father + aunt and Santos is historically bad; that they both warned friends of his to watch out; that George stole from the aunt at one point. Reporter says relationship with father has been improving lately (ETA: but seriously any relationship you have with this guy is going to have multiple, unhealable fractures, yes?).

No info on the financial status of father or aunt. No doubt that will come out in due course.

And they got the money from.... I dunno, someone who didn't have their own Supreme Court Justice to bribe?

As I understand it, they didn't produce it; they just guaranteed it.

Anyway, I'm just bearing news. I recall that the reporter on MSNBC said that the aunt was well off. (I repeat; bearing news--I'm part of the popcorn brigade on this one, and was hoping for jail).

Hey, I've thrown good money after bad on one of my kids but the day finally came when I told him to buck up, he's on his own. Especially when it came to something serious. But I guess some people are bigger suckers than I was.

Assuming they have at least $500K equity between them (not unreasonable if they both own houses), then cash wouldn't be necessary.

I'm sure Santos will claim that anyone putting up his bond would be subject to harassment, so that's why he wanted to keep their names secret. But his histrionics seem a little overblown for the actual risk.

Gift article,

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/22/nyre ... =url-share
Of the many questions that surround Representative George Santos, one has recently taken center stage: Who guaranteed the $500,000 bond that allowed him to be released from federal custody last month?

On Thursday, the mystery was solved, when the names of the two guarantors were unsealed and revealed to be two of his relatives: his father, Gercino dos Santos Jr., and his aunt Elma Preven.

:snippity:

They did not have to put up cash or property to secure his release, but they told a magistrate judge they would be “personally responsible” for ensuring that he appeared in court and followed the conditions of his bond. If he did not, the guarantors would be on the hook for the entirety of the $500,000 bond.

:snippity:

In her order, the judge, Joanna Seybert, said that Mr. Santos’s own actions had encouraged the frenzy, writing that his efforts to shield his guarantors’ identities, “notwithstanding the fact that he is aware their identities are not controversial, has simply created hysteria over what is, in actuality, a nonissue.”
In other words, Santos is a drama queen.
