In the event that you haven't been following along, MN-Skeptic is a quiet voice of wisdom in our raucous little playpen.

Of course, every male bone in me recoils at the thought of using pink highlight. Can't help it, I was born AND raised to be a straight white male, never knowing that me and my elk would become pariahs in our dotage. :violin: :crying:

Maybe I'll just use ... I dunno ...

All I was looking for was a color that manages to work the best over all themes including the black and dark grey ones. I was not looking for a perfect one on all platforms but something that closer to usable on all.

Apparently, my attempt was unwanted and hated. I'll stop trying to help.

You were trying to help, and I don't think your efforts were hated, they just pointed out a few flies in the ointment.

And maybe there isn't a good solution, because all of them are extra work and none of them is perfect on all the different styles. White text on pink background? :cantlook:

My ultimate solution is, if you can't read it, hit the quote button and look at it there. You don't have to actually quote a post to look at how it was done, just don't hit Submit.

I'm groovin on the Bobby Vinton style (blue on blue prosilver default). Believe me, you'll be a total Polish girl chick magnet if you can sing Vinton songs well.

My husband is red/green color blind. Red is definitely a problem for him. My grandson is the same.

Yeah well, I have the answer:

Harken harkly, my peeps, because this is going to work.

WHEN YOU USE THE HIGHLIGHT BUTTON (the one that, for whatever reason, reminds me of a cheerleader's megaphone), ALSO USE THE TEXT COLOR BUTTON AND MAKE THE TEXT BLACK.

So the phrase "a recipe waiting to happen" will look like this:

A recipe waiting to happen.

And it will look like that in every board style, because you are overriding the default text color.

Here is what the code looks like:

Code: Select all

A recipe waiting to happen.
It takes about 3 seconds to change the text color, you already have it selected. This is the best solution.

That's my rulin' and I'm stickin' with it. :oldman:
Edit: OMG, I looked at it in Hexagon and it's beautiful. Of course, you can use other combinations that offer good contrast. Just remember, when you use highlight (or the Edit button), change the text color. Deal?

Just to be a bitch, I'ma use yellow on yellow from now on.

Unless I'm feeling contrary or sad, in which case I shall use black on black.

I can deal with specifying black for the text color, well, as long as I remember.

Well… mostly I can read (as in literate), so unless it’s a small but important segment of a large selection, the urge to highlight may be unneeded. Sometimes am entire paragraph of one paragraph is highlighted. Sometimes four paragraphs of four paragraphs is highlighted.

In any case, what’s wrong with Underlining?

I’m currently trying Creamy and am generally with it…

Hyperlinking has ruined our ability to underline. We avoid it now so as to not be confused with a hyperlink.

I've been avoiding the highlighting problem by just selecting any highlighted text as if I were going to copy it. It also works if you get a light text box with light text in it (I've run across a couple of those.) Anyway, it just take a second to highlight it and doesn't depend on other users doing anything or on Foggy making any changes.

Well once again, I can't make any changes that will fix the highlighting or edit box problem. The answer to that is just plain be considerate toward your fellow forum people, and if you do use Highlight or Edit, change the text color to make it readable. It's two extra clicks - the color wheel, and then a color on the chart, and you're done. You already had the text selected when you clicked the Highlight button. And if the goal is to call attention to a specific passage of your text, have some fun with it and it will stand out even more. Here's some white text on a dark blue background. That took about 10 seconds to do, and it really stands out for your reader.

In other words, I'm yappin' but I ain't gonna work on this no more. :boxing:

I wasn't asking you to make any more changes, Foggy - I was just trying to point out something those of us who run into the problem can do ourselves to avoid it. Sorry if I wasn't clear!!

Yeah, I really just wanted to publicize my solution again, in case anybody missed it.

Because that IS a solution that will work well across the various board styles (themes). You can do it very easily:

1. Select the text you want
2. Click the highlight button.
3. Click the color wheel button
4. Click on a contrasting color (usually black, at the top left of the chart)

You're done, and everybody can see the highlighted text easily. But the key is, the writer (you) has to add those extra two clicks, to make it work for other people.

Sorry if I made it look like I was picking on you, Kriselda. :oopsy:

Where is this "color wheel" of which you speak? I know I can be dense at times but I don't see it.
