In a moment of remembered irony......

These comments are stirring old memories, some pleasant, some unpleasant ..... however......

I now remember that as a shiny, new, know it all junior officer in Germany, for two summer through autumns, in addition to "real work", I was "voluntold" to be a combination meteorologist and crop rotation specialist. with obviously absolutely no background, knowledge, interest or desire to do same....l   :confuzzled:

My task was to periodically review and report on the weather forecasts, satellite shots of farms and wheat fields and the like and the market prices and future strike prices for wheat and potato's from ..... Ukraine.

Oh and look for changes in emphasis of the written word and radio broadcasts, in English from Russia....

At the time Ukraine was the main bread basket of the Soviet Union and at harvest time in particular, conscripts were released from direct military duties to prepare for, assist in and transport the harvests and military vehicles pressed into service for transport of produce.

If we saw good harvests, lots of workers in the fields, lots of military trucks going backwards and forwards from farms and collectives with low prices on the futures market, It meant that people would be fed, stocks would be sufficient through winter and spring and possible civil unrest in cities would be unlikely.

If there was bad weather, too much or too little rain at the wrong time, we saw few bodies moving in the fields, few vehicles moving convoy like from farm to transport nexus, prices rising due to scarcity.... then the fear was that if stocks were low, rationing was implemented and distribution was borked.... hungry masses after all, were what put the Communist Party in power in the first place.....

Then I was supposed to also report on any changes in the verbiage, changes from talks of 5 year plans, Industrial might, Soviet technological prowess ( ) and starting to shift to "Mother Russia", the great Russian people, Russian survival against invaders and Nazi's, stoic veterans talking about the hardships and privations of WW II

If so, the traditional path to control for Soviet Russia was to blame outside malign actors (the West), to focus the people on the support for Mother Russia and hunger as a tool of the West and the probability of a strike into Germany escalated dramatically.

When I may possibly have muttered that I'm sure we have intelligence agencies for this stuff I was "counselled" that

A. Military Intelligence rarely is.....
B. The secret squirrels rarely wanted to share their nuts
C. Politics Persistently P*sses on Proper Perception and Process
D. What part of "in service" did I not quite grasp.......

The myriad little forms of corruption seem to add up to real problems:
