I don't know about Houston, but here in beautiful Puget Sound, there are no shelters which accept walk-ins. Everything is by appointment, which makes it extremely difficult to adopt. Some shelters open up waiting lists for available animals, and contact you for an appointment IF the specific animal has not already been adopted by someone ahead of you on the list. Other shelters have you make an appointment first, and you just have to hope that there's a suitable animal left by the time you arrive for your appointment!

It's not that they aren't available, but many of them have stipulations such as 'must be only pet' or 'no other cats', which cuts down on the number available. A lot of them are also bonded pairs, so since we already have two and a half cats (George is a barn cat, but he spends most of his day inside and he is NOT allowed out after dark), we would have more than the legal limit of four animals allowed in King County.

I think Petco and Petsmart still have some animals for adoption, but no art markets here, no festivals still, and our farmer's market isn't open until much later in the year. No 'free time' to exercise animals, that would be a huge liability here .
