Re: What are you reading lately?
Ender in Exile, by Orson Scott Card. Because I bought The Last Shadow and I want to be sharp on the details of the story before I read it.
And yeah, I know Card is an anti-gay asshat, being old and Mormon and whatnot, but I fell in love with the books before I found out he was anti-gay, so gimme a break on this one. That man can write a story.
So I checked online and Exile seemed like the last of the first five in the series, and I'm gonna read that and then open Last Shadow. But I don't know ... maybe I should read the whole series again, just for fun.

A sweet, sensitive, spiritual, and perceptive book by David Michie, The Dalai Lama’s Cat is narrated from the point of view of a His Holiness’ purry friend. She is rescued from the streets of Delhi and given a front-row seat into the world of the Dalai Lama, so she has pages and pages of wisdom to share.
This is a joyful read. It’s irreverent and funny, but you’ll find many gems about life, happiness, kindness, and karma as His Holiness’ Cat listens in on conversations of the Dalai Lama with celebrities, world leaders, and his followers. There will be many reasons to smile as you read, and more reasons to sit back and think about the writings.

Travels With George by Nathaniel Philbrick
It's different kind of history book where the author follows the path George Washington took as he traveled to the states of the union during his presidency.

Thanks for the reminder. I’m about halfway through the audible version. So, so good. It has a sort of Michael Chabon vibe, although Chabon came later.Dr. Caligari wrote: ↑Sun Dec 05, 2021 7:39 pm I just finished The Hollow Places, a very good (and very creepy) horror novel by T. Re: What are you reading lately?
Ed Mastery, by Michael Lucas. It's a computer book, so it has chapters 0, 1, 10, 11, 100, and so on. He's very clever and a great teacher, I really did make enormous strides reading his SSH Mastery. When I log into my server now (yeah, the one that's serving this actual web page to your actual browser), I don't log in with a username and password anymore, so insecure. I log in like the big kids now, using an encrypted key file that has never seen any of the tubes of the internet, because it lives on my computer (and on a couple of thumb drives, just for luck).

Decoding Dickens’s Secret Notes to Himself, One Symbol at a Time
A letter Charles Dickens wrote in his mystifying style of shorthand had gone unread for over a century. Computer programmers helped scholars decode it.
By Jenny Gross
Feb. 8, 2022
LONDON — For more than a century, Charles Dickens scholars have tried, without much success, to decipher a one-page letter written by the author in symbols, dots and scribbles.
The letter sat for decades, unread, in a vault in the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, until recent months, when two Americans with backgrounds in computer science were able to make substantial headway in decoding the letter. They were motivated by a challenge from the University of Leicester, which posted a copy of it online and promised 300 British pounds, or $406, to the person who could make the most sense of it.
The winner of the competition, Shane Baggs, a computer technical support specialist from San Jose, Calif., had never read a Dickens novel before. He transcribed more symbols than any other of the 1,000 people who entered — helping to crack a 163-year-old mystery about one of the world’s most celebrated authors.
“After getting mostly C grades in literature, I never dreamed anything I’d ever do would be of interest to Dickens scholars!” Mr. Baggs said in a statement. Ken Cox, a 20-year-old cognitive science student at the University of Virginia, came in second place.

Re: What are you reading lately?
Just finished Betrayal by Jonathan Karl. I thought it was the best of the post-Trump analyses. Though I don't think there was anything that I have not seen before (mostly here!) it was put together in a compelling narrative. His detailed description of the Jan. 6 horror was practically cinematic. He quoted extensively from Liz Cheney's speech that she never gave that day and it's clear that she and her father were both heroes of the day, and sources for the book. I hate to say that but it's true.
