Where is Peng Shuai?

#1

Post by Foggy »

Peng, 35, a three-time [Chinese] Olympian and a two-time Grand Slam champion in doubles, has not been seen in public for more than two weeks, after she accused a former vice premier in an online post of sexually assaulting her about three years ago. Her post, and discussion of it, was quickly censored on Chinese social media.

Star athletes such as Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka have demanded information on her, while the United Nations’ human rights office has called for proof of Peng’s safety.

Per one of the fake news networks, I saw it reported yesterday that China has no idea of what we are talking about.

Obviously, the most likely scenario is that she was imprisoned, possibly even killed, for reporting a sexual assault by a powerful crook.

'Course, even in America women are assaulted and go missing every day.

I don't know of anything we can do but help publicize her disappearance. :daydreaming:

State media: Chinese tennis star Peng to reappear 'soon'
Influential Party-linked journalist seeks to calm Twitter storm after 'new' photos raise more questions than answers

PUBLISHED : 20 NOV 2021 AT 15:53
UPDATED: 20 NOV 2021 AT 16:46
WRITER: REUTERS AND AFP

Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai has been staying in her own home “freely” and will make a public appearance “soon”, a prominent state-media journalist said on Saturday.

The former doubles world number one has not been seen or heard from publicly since she said on social media on Nov 2 that former vice-premier Zhang Gaoli had coerced her into sex and they later had an on-off consensual relationship.

Neither Zhang nor the Chinese government have commented on her allegation. Peng’s social media post was quickly deleted and the topic has been blocked from discussion on China’s heavily censored internet.

“In the past few days, she stayed in her own home freely and she didn’t want to be disturbed. She will show up in public and participate in some activities soon,” Global Times editor-in-chief Hu Xijin wrote on Twitter.

The Global Times is published by the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party. Its English-language commentaries, many of them penned by Hu, are widely read for insights into what the Chinese government is thinking.

China is not known to snuff off undesirables, but they isolate them.

The international pressure may be a bit much when the organizers of the tennis tournaments speak of boycotting China.

Think they'd buy it at the P&E if we said Peng found President Obama's long form birf certificate and Biden got China to disappear her so it wouldn't get out? Nah, that's too silly.

'Course, they heard Fogbow was on the case, and y'all know what that means ... the Mighty 699th can't be far behind.

So I'm glad we could contribute to the international pressure on the Chinese government.

:thankyou:

' Course, we won't let up until Peng surfaces in person and healthy. :nope:

Next project: Since there is no official Antifa organization, or website, perchance we could do an auxiliary site that ostensibly would be Antifa HQ for America. With disclaimers and stuff. Discuss.

OMG, AntifaHQ.US is $1 a year (private registration will cost more).
Edit: 4:10 pm - More than an hour later, the silence is deafening. Glad I didn't make a major investment.

Oh boy, all Robert C. Laity would need to hear is the first words of 699th... and he'll be in a panic. We all remember what the Assault Division did to him last time he tried to fool around.

Shocking these aren't taken!!

Videos Said to Be of Peng Shuai Don’t Resolve Questions About Her Safety
The editor of a state-run newspaper on Saturday shared two clips said to be of the Chinese tennis star on Twitter. But they are unverified, and the head of the WTA called them “insufficient.”

Nearly two weeks after people across the world began asking “Where is Peng Shuai?,” two questionable videos surfaced Saturday on social media of a person who appears to be the Chinese tennis star at a restaurant.

The videos were shared on Twitter by the editor of a state-run newspaper, but the seemingly unnatural conversation in one video and the unclear location and dates of both raised questions about Peng’s safety and whether she was appearing in the videos of her own free will.

:snippity:

Steve Simon, the chief executive of the WTA, the women’s professional tennis tour, has particularly been strident, demanding verifiable proof that Peng is safe and can move about society as she pleases and that officials fully investigate her allegations. If that does not occur, Simon said the WTA would stop playing tennis tournaments in China.

On Saturday, after the videos surfaced, Simon continued to express frustration with the inability to independently verify Peng’s well-being and said that the organization’s “relationship with China is at a crossroads.”

BEIJING (AP) — Missing tennis star Peng Shuai reappeared in public Sunday at a youth tournament in Beijing, according to photos released by the organizer, as the ruling Communist Party tried to quell fears abroad while suppressing information in China about Peng after she accused a senior leader of sexual assault.

The post by the China Open on the Weibo social media service made no mention of Peng’s disappearance or her accusation. The three-time Olympian and former Wimbledon champion was shown standing beside a court, waving and signing oversize commemorative tennis balls for children.

The ruling party appears to be trying to defuse alarm about Peng without acknowledging her disappearance after she on Nov. 2 accused Zhang Gaoli, a member of the party’s ruling Standing Committee until 2018, of forcing her to have sex.

CNN reports that the IOC says they had a video call with her and that she’s just staying at home. CNN had no access to any video of the call.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced the suspension of all tournaments in China amid concerns about the safety of the Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai, following weeks of a high-profile row with Beijing over the player’s wellbeing.

“With the full support of the WTA Board of Directors, I am announcing the immediate suspension of all WTA tournaments in China, including Hong Kong,” said the WTA chairman, Steve Simon, announcing the decision in a statement on Wednesday.

“In good conscience, I don’t see how I can ask our athletes to compete there when Peng Shuai is not allowed to communicate freely and has seemingly been pressured to contradict her allegation of sexual assault. Given the current state of affairs, I am also greatly concerned about the risks that all of our players and staff could face if we were to hold events in China in 2022.”

The move marked a paradigm shift in how sports associations have dealt with China as the country becomes more assertive in its way of dealing with both domestic and international affairs. In the past, sports organisations have rapidly backed down from rows with Beijing for fear of losing its gigantic market.

Kudos to the WTA.

Steve Simon (CEO of WTA) gave a terrific interview with Erin Burnett of CNN today. A soft-spoken man who utterly trashed the IOC (one of their top IOC dogs spoke with Peng Shuai recently and said she was clearly fine and happy and not constrained in any way).

Can't find a link yet. But hearing Simon talk about the founding mission of the WTA and how it was impossible to turn their backs on sexual abuse was very good.

Peng Shuai, the Chinese tennis player, meets I.O.C. leader at the Olympics.

By Andrew Keh
Feb. 6, 2022 Updated 9:43 p.m. ET

BEIJING — Peng Shuai, the Chinese tennis player who largely disappeared from public life after making sexual abuse accusations against a political official in November, held a private meeting with Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, in Beijing.

The two had dinner on Saturday at the Olympic Club and were joined by Kirsty Coventry, former chair of the Athletes’ Commission and an I.O.C. member, according to a statement released Monday from the I.O.C.

Journalist who interviewed Peng Shuai casts doubt over her freedom
L’Equipe reporter Marc Ventouillac, who spoke to Peng this week, says it is ‘impossible to say’ if the Chinese tennis star is safe

Associated Press
Wed 9 Feb 2022 04.08 GMT

One of the journalists who conducted the first sit-down interview with Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai said that the carefully controlled conversation did not answer questions about whether she can speak her mind or move freely.

A Chinese Olympic official was in the room and translated the conversation with Peng, who disappeared from public view for weeks last year after she made public allegations that a former top-ranked Communist party official pressured her into having sex.

Her social media post was deleted quickly, and Peng was not seen for a couple weeks, then appeared only in photo opportunities arranged by Chinese officials. Worries about her led to a global outpouring of fears for her safety.

In the L’Equipe interview this week, Peng denied she had been sexually assaulted and said the social media post which triggered the controversy has been misunderstood.
