Newest star at ABC (Adelaide)

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-24/ ... /100403240

The ABC is used to looking into dark places to uncover the truth but the subject of this story came too close to home overnight, in the form of a baby brown snake.

Staff at the ABC's Adelaide offices at Collinswood were this morning informed of the viperous intruder, with a section of the building closed off as a specialist snake catcher was called in to hunt the fugitive reptile.

"I don't want to alarm anyone but a note has just come up on my screen saying don't panic, but there is a brown snake loose in the ABC building," ABC Radio Adelaide's Ali Clarke told listeners this morning.

Between Politico's operations in North America, its joint venture in Europe, and Protocol, the company employs more than 500 journalists. Here's my full story about today's sale to Axel

I have never bookmarked Politico and rarely read it. I will occasionally read stuff by Josh Gerstein, their legal reporter who does a pretty good job. The rest of it? Meh.

José Díaz-Balart, one of the few Latino anchors on U.S. television, is returning to MSNBC later this month to host a new show, the network announced Tuesday.

The big picture: The "Noticias Telemundo" anchor will take over daily the 10 a.m. ET hour on MSNBC for a show called "José Díaz-Balart Reports," beginning Sept. 27, as the network seeks to add more diverse voices.

NBC said Díaz-Balart will continue to anchor "NBC Nightly News Saturday" on NBC News and take on a broader role at Noticias Telemundo, where he will anchor monthly specials and breaking news events.

Shot Spotter Files $300 Million Defamation Suit Against Vice Media

Gunshot detection company ShotSpotter has filed a $300 million lawsuit against Vice Media, claiming the news outlet “grossly misrepresented” the accuracy of its technology.

The company’s lawsuit, filed in Delaware Superior Court, claims Vice set out to create a narrative “that falsely accused ShotSpotter of conspiring with police to fabricate gunshots from thin air to frame innocent Black men.”

The lawsuit specifically points to a July story in which Vice reported the company frequently modifies alerts at the request of police departments that use its technology, in an effort to show evidence supports police reports on shootings.

Among the cases that story focused on was one in Chicago in which Vice reported a ShotSpotter analyst modified data to show what was initially reported as fireworks to classify it as gunfire, and changed the location of the alert by a mile.

According to ShotSpotter, court records in that case prove that ShotSpotter did not modify gunshot alerts at the request of police departments.

So. Sinclair was hit with a Ransomware attack.
Sinclair Workers Say TV Channels Are in ‘Pandemonium’ After Ransomware Attack
Sinclair is still struggling to go back to normal operations. Channels can’t air ads, employees had no email access for days, and there’s a lot of confusion.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, hackers took down the corporate servers and systems of Sinclair Broadcast Group, a giant U.S. TV conglomerate that owns or operates more than 600 channels across the country.

Days later, inside the company, “it's pandemonium and chaos,” as one current employee, who asked to remain anonymous as they were not authorized to speak to the press, told Motherboard.

Sinclair calls itself “the largest and most diversified television broadcasting company in the country,” but it has a controversial reputation. In the last few years, the company has aggressively tried to expand its already vast empire with an attempted—and failed—acquisition of Tribune Media. Critics have also criticized it for using so-called "must-run" segments to push local news stations around the country to run identical, conservative-leaning packages.

“There is no work right now. Nothing works.”

The company is now in the headlines for being the latest in a seemingly endless list of ransomware victims. Sinclair has released very few details about the attack since it was hacked Sunday. On Wednesday, Bloomberg reported that the group behind the attack is the infamous Evil Corp., a ransomware gang that is believed to be based in Russia and which was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury department in 2019.

The ransomware attack interfered with several channels’ broadcast programming, preventing them from airing ads or NFL games, as reported by The Record, a news site owned by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. It has also left employees confused and wondering what's going on, according to current Sinclair workers.

“Whoever did this, they either by accident or by design did a very good job,” a current employee said in a phone call, explaining that there are some channels that haven’t been able to air commercials since Sunday. “We're really running in the blind [...] you really can't do your job.”

The employee said that he was working on Sunday and was able to get two emails out to colleagues. “And one of them got it, and the other one didn’t,” they said.

Employees did not have access to their emails until Tuesday morning, according to the two employees and text messages seen by Motherboard. The office computers, however, are still locked by the company out of precaution, and Sinclair told employees not to log into their corporate VPN, which they usually used to do their jobs.

AT&T has yet to answer for its support of OAN, and customers have had it

NAACP President Derrick Johnson is set to meet with AT&T leadership at the company’s Washington, D.C. headquarters today to discuss AT&T’s relationship with One America News (OAN). Johnson condemned AT&T after a Reuters investigation published earlier this month found that a lucrative contract with AT&T-owned platforms was responsible for 90% of OAN parent company Herring Networks, Inc.’s funding, and that AT&T even had a hand in creating OAN when it launched in 2013.

“We are outraged to learn that AT&T has been funneling tens of millions of dollars into OAN since the network's inception,” Johnson said. “AT&T has as a result caused irreparable damage to our democracy.”

OAN head Robert Herring Sr. revealed in a 2019 deposition obtained by Reuters that AT&T executives were the ones who approached him about founding OAN. “They [AT&T] told us they wanted a conservative network,” Herring said. “They only had one, which was Fox News, and they had seven others on the other side. When they said that, I jumped to it and built one.”

This is a surprise. I know my buddy Sternie disliked him but I thought he did a good job, especially during true breaking news. I stopped watching the 11th hour because I can't stand Peter Baker and that Stoddard chick and they seemed to be on every night.

Former Trump campaign adviser Steve Cortes is out at Newsmax and will host his last primetime broadcast for the right-wing cable channel early next week, if not sooner, five sources familiar with the matter told The Daily Beast.

Tensions between Cortes and the MAGA cable network had long been simmering, sources suggested, but it was the Trump loyalist’s vehement disagreement—which he wasn’t shy about publicly voicing—with Newsmax’s company-wide vaccine rules that was the final straw.

Newsmax did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Earlier this month, Newsmax instituted a rule that all employees must either be vaccinated or submit to weekly COVID testing. The news of such a policy, which was in compliance with the Biden administration’s policy for businesses with more than 100 employees, pushed Cortes to unequivocally declare on Twitter that he wouldn’t have any part of it.

“I will not comply w/ any organization’s attempt to enforce Biden’s capricious & unscientific Medical Apartheid mandate,” he blared in one tweet. “I will not be forced into the injection, nor will I disclose my vaccination status. No one should be pressured to choose between medical privacy & their job.”

CNN suspends Chris Cuomo indefinitely
By Oliver Darcy and Brian Stelter, CNN Business
Updated 6:27 PM ET, Tue November 30, 2021

New York (CNN Business) CNN said Tuesday that it has suspended Chris Cuomo "indefinitely" after new documents released this week indicated that the anchor was more intimately involved than previously known in helping his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, craft a defense amid a flurry of sexual misconduct allegations.

"The New York Attorney General's office released transcripts and exhibits Monday that shed new light on Chris Cuomo's involvement in his brother's defense," a CNN spokesperson said Tuesday evening. "The documents, which we were not privy to before their public release, raise serious questions."
"When Chris admitted to us that he had offered advice to his brother's staff, he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly," the spokesperson continued. "But we also appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first and job second."
"However, these documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother's efforts than we previously knew," the spokesperson added. "As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation."

I hate to say it, but I agree. I liked him at one time, but his show became really weird. He invited the worst right wingers to come on the show and blow their smoke up viewers' rear ends, then he would try, mostly ineffectively, to refute them. I haven't had the stomach to watch his show in a very long time, it just became so lame.

He kept having Kellyanne on his show, they just talk at each other for 15, 30 minutes, then he pats himself on the back for having her on when other shows don't.

I rarely watched Cuomo's program, but the snippets I caught he seemed to relish waxing on philosophy based on his Jesuit education. I always thought he was way in over his head.
