Just weeks after its launch, the pro-Trump social network GETTR is inundated with terrorist propaganda spread by supporters of Islamic State, according to a POLITICO review of online activity on the fledgling platform.

The social network — started a month ago by members of former President Donald Trump’s inner circle — features reams of jihadi-related material, including graphic videos of beheadings, viral memes that promote violence against the West and even memes of a militant executing Trump in an orange jumpsuit similar to those used in Guantanamo Bay.

The rapid proliferation of such material is placing GETTR in the awkward position of providing a safe haven for jihadi extremists online as it attempts to establish itself as a free speech MAGA-alternative to sites like Facebook and Twitter.

It underscores the challenges facing Trump and his followers in the wake of his ban from the mainstream social media platforms following the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill riots.

Islamic State “has been very quick to exploit GETTR,” said Moustafa Ayad, executive director for Africa, the Middle East and Asia at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a think tank that tracks online extremism, who first discovered the jihadi accounts and shared his findings with POLITICO.

• A social media service started by former President Trump's associates is host to child pornography.
  That's according to a new report from Stanford's Internet Observatory on the platform, called Gettr.
  The service "does not implement industry standard" moderation tools, which filter out child pornography.

A pro-Trump social media service has a major problem, according to a new report: It's not filtering out known images of child pornography.

Gettr, which was started by former Trump aide and spokesperson Jason Miller, has "very few — if any — mechanisms for detecting spam, violent content, pornography, and child exploitation imagery," a new study by the Stanford Internet Observatory said.

The study found 16 examples of images on Gettr that were flagged by PhotoDNA, a photo-moderation database, as "child exploitation imagery."

The PhotoDNA database is considered an industry standard tool for frontline defense against users uploading images of child pornography.

When Stanford's Internet Observatory uploaded benign test images from the PhotoDNA database to Gettr, they weren't flagged before being posted — which likely means the database isn't being used at all on the service. Instead, it appears to be relying solely on user-based moderation, the researchers found.

Essentially, the only way offensive content is flagged to Gettr moderators is by users reporting it themselves.

"Gettr appears to rely entirely on community reporting mechanisms to find sensitive content and illegal child-related imagery," the report said. "An entirely community-based detection mechanism for sensitive and illegal content is extremely limited and prone to abuse, as such posts and comments may not be seen by users inclined to report them."

Gettr has faced moderation issues before, albeit with legal pornography and other lewd images (rather than illegal content). There were also security issues near launch as a number of prominent accounts on Gettr were hacked.

There appears to be infighting among former advisers to Donald Trump after Roger Stone was banned from GETTR, a social media platform with connections to Jason Miller and Steve Bannon. Stone took to the social media site Gab to complain about his treatment on GETTR.

"(I)f you were under the illusion that the new social media website GETTR set up by Mueller informant Steve Bannon and his criminal confederate Jason Miller does not engage in censorship perhaps you can explain why they just suspended my account," Stone wrote. "Bannon is a criminal whose indictment for stealing money will be renewed shortly in New York State. I hear the New York state prisons are particularly rough.Once Bannon is in prison Miller won't last week on the street."

He later added: "Steve Bannon Buttboi Jason Miller shall sleep with the fishes, [f]iguratively speaking of course." Gab promoted Stone's complaint with a tweet. "Did Gettr's Big Tech-like censorship AI ban Roger Stone for 'hate speech,' which they do not allow in their Big Tech-like Terms of Service, while claiming to be a 'free speech' platform?" Gab asked. Salon correspondent Zachary Petrizzo said that he was blocked on Twitter by Miller, who is GETTR's CEO, when he asked for a comment on Stone's suspension.

Update: In a statement to Raw Story, GETTR attributed Stone's suspension to a mistake.

"Multiple fake Roger Stone accounts were suspended following user complaints, but his real GETTR account was inadvertently suspended too. His correct account is currently active and the imposter accounts have all been removed," the company said.

As defenders of freedom, we welcome President Trump to the social media sector and our common fight against Big Tech censorship in America. The American people are abandoning legacy social media platforms in droves because these powerful companies have abandoned the fundamental principles of free speech and have turned against freedom-loving Americans like you.

While we hoped the President’s return to social media would be on CloutHub, having him back online and participating in the national dialogue regardless of the platform is a positive development for our country. No President should ever be removed from Social Media which is our modern-day town square, whether Republican or Democrat.

IF for any reason this agreement to arbitrate is determined by a court or arbitrator to be unenforceable, you agree that the federal and state courts with jurisdiction over Suffolk County, New York will have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute involving SYMH. Any arbitration will be governed by the AAA Commercial Arbitration Rules, Consumer Due Process Protocol, and Supplementary Procedures or Resolution of Consumer-Related Disputes. For disputes that involve a claim of less than US $10,000, the arbitration will be conducted only by telephone, online, or based solely on written submissions and not by personal appearance of any party or witness. This User Agreement and any dispute between you and SYMH will be governed by the laws of the State of New York.
You agree to arbitrate any dispute that you have with SYMH. You agree to defend and indemnify SYMH, as well as any of its officers, directors, employees, and agents, from and against any and all claims, actions, damages, obligations, losses, liabilities, costs or debt, and expenses (including but not limited to all attorneys fees) arising from or relating to your access to and use of the Services. SYMH will have the right to conduct its own defense, at your expense, in any action or proceeding covered by this indemnity.
