Nice suit, Joe!

Does anybody else want to make $500 on a stunningly stupid bet this guy proposed? Let's see him come through, there are escrow services for bets between people. Usually, they run away.

Re: #46 President Joseph "Joe" Robinette Biden Jr. & Vice President Kamala Devi Harris
While the preface of the bet is that Biden is removed and TFG is reinstated, the bet seems to be that President Biden is longer President. And there are several ways for Joe to no longer be President with none of them involving TFG. (While he appears healthy, his age has to factor in). Just my two cents that the wager is clearly Trump reinstatement which will automatically mean Biden isn't President.
The above is not happening, but I would like to see the betters get their money without hassle since the goalposts are in perpetual motion by the RWNJS.

Have been DETERMINED to be nice today on Twitter, it wasn't easy. Ignored the stupid memes and comments that don't have any thought to them. But some asked questions and took the time to answer nicely and politely. Some did too. So thanks Scott, from your nastiness some goodness happened.

Tens of billions of dollars in pandemic aid for hospitals and nursing homes not distributed
By Amy Goldstein
Yesterday at 9:00 a.m. EDT
Tens of billions of dollars designated by Congress to help hospitals, nursing homes and other health-care providers stave off financial hardship in the coronavirus pandemic are sitting unused because the Biden administration has not released the money.
As many hospitals bulge again with covid-19 patients, a wide swath of the health-care industry is exasperated that federal health officials have not made available any more of the aid since President Biden took office. About $44 billion from a Provider Relief Fund created last year remains unspent, along with $8.5 billion Congress allotted in March for medical care in rural areas.
With the coronavirus’s delta variant fueling a fourth pandemic surge, health-care institutions, lobbyists and lawmakers have ratcheted up complaints to senior Biden administration health officials, imploring them to decide how the money will be divided and when it will be distributed.
“There’s just no good reason for the administration to be sitting on these funds,” said Mark Parkinson, president and chief executive of the American Health Care Association, a trade group that represents nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. Many are running short on money, he said, because the virus’s heavy concentration in long-term-care centers early in the pandemic is still causing potential patients and residents to stay away.
Parkinson said he has had four conversations since February with the agency in the Department of Health and Human Services that is in charge of the money, and one last month with senior aides to HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra.
“Each conversation, we came away with the feeling it would be that month,” Parkinson said. “And we’ve been wrong.”
The aid bottleneck is inconsistent with one of the first commitments Biden made when he took office in January. The day after he was sworn in, the president signed an executive order to make it easier for Americans to get treatment if infected with the novel coronavirus, saying his administration “shall promptly . . . provide targeted surge assistance to critical care and long-term facilities.”
Federal health officials declined to discuss reasons for the delay, but HHS said in a statement: “We continue to work expeditiously to get these funds out the door and will be announcing another distribution of funds soon. Plans are being finalized.”
Becerra has been asked repeatedly on Capitol Hill about the provider fund. In his most recent testimony, in June, he said that during the Trump administration, “there wasn’t enough transparency in the process, how the money was allotted. . . . We’re trying to provide that transparency, make sure we direct the money where it’s needed.”
The secretary did not address how the money could be redirected or when it might be released.

Is Dilbert even published anymore? I have no idea.
In any case, it is actually fairly common for other people to take up writing the day to day strips while the actual cartoonist becomes a kind of manager of a franchise, if he remains involved at all. I learned a fair bit about the business from reading Bill Watterson's account of the battles he had with the Syndicate that published Calvin and Hobbes. The contract that he originally signed meant that the Syndicate could continue Calvin and Hobbes without him if he didn't play ball. (Bill was probably 30% in the wrong in that whole Saga, but I understand where he was coming from, and the Syndicate had a point too.)
So Adams could have been quietly handed a fat cheque with a keep your mouth shut clause, and kicked out the door years ago and no-one would have a clue.

Federal Jobless Aid, a Lifeline to Millions, Reaches an End
The abrupt loss of pandemic unemployment benefits on a broad scale could have long-term effects not only for the recipients but also for the economy.
By Ben Casselman
Sept. 2, 2021
PHILADELPHIA — Tara Harrison has a master’s degree, yet is applying for the low-paying receptionist jobs she last held as a teenager. Evan Ocheret is considering giving up his career in music. Amanda McCarty is worried about losing her place in the middle class. Amanda Rinehart is considering borrowing money from her grandmother or selling blood plasma to feed herself and her son.
Unemployment benefits have helped stave off financial ruin for millions of laid-off workers over the last year and a half. After this week, that lifeline will snap: An estimated 7.5 million people will lose their benefits when federally funded emergency unemployment programs end. Millions more will see their checks cut by $300 a week.
The cutoff is the latest and arguably the largest of the benefit “cliffs” that jobless workers have faced during the pandemic. Last summer, the government ended a $600 weekly supplement that workers received early in the crisis, but other programs remained in place. In December, benefits briefly lapsed for millions of workers, but Congress quickly restored them.
This time, no similar rescue appears likely. President Biden has encouraged states with high unemployment rates to use existing federal funds to extend benefits, but few appear likely to do so. And administration officials have said repeatedly that they will not seek a congressional extension of the benefits.

Looks to me that Biden shared his memory of a lost family member with those who just had lost theirs. Why critizize that?“The NYT reportedly changed a headline on Saturday about criticism President Biden has received for bringing up his grief over his late son Beau with some of the families of the 13 fallen U.S. service members from the Kabul terror attack last month.”

Unemployment Benefits Expire for Millions Without Pushback From Biden
The president has encouraged some states to continue helping the long-term unemployed, but administration officials said it was time for enhanced federal aid to end.
By Jim Tankersley and Ben Casselman
Sept. 6, 2021
WASHINGTON — Expanded unemployment benefits that have kept millions of Americans afloat during the pandemic expired on Monday, setting up an abrupt cutoff of assistance to 7.5 million people as the Delta variant rattles the pandemic recovery.
The end of the aid came without objection from President Biden and his top economic advisers, who have become caught in a political fight over the benefits and are now banking on other federal help and an autumn pickup in hiring to keep vulnerable families from foreclosure and food lines.
The $1.9 trillion economic aid package Mr. Biden signed in March included extended and expanded benefits for unemployed workers, like a $300-per-week federal supplement to state jobless payments, additional weeks of assistance for the long-term unemployed and the extension of a special program to provide benefits to so-called gig workers who traditionally do not qualify for unemployment benefits. The expiration date reached on Monday means that 7.5 million people will lose their benefits entirely and another three million will lose the $300 weekly supplement.
Republicans and small business owners have assailed efforts to extend the aid, contending that it has held back the economic recovery and fueled a labor shortage by discouraging people from looking for work. Liberal Democrats and progressive groups have pushed for another round of aid, saying millions of Americans remain vulnerable and in need of help.
Mr. Biden and his advisers have pointedly refused to call on Congress to extend the benefits further, a decision that reflects the prevailing view of the state of the recovery inside the administration and the president’s desire to focus on winning support for his broader economic agenda.
The president’s most senior economic advisers say the economy is in the process of completing a hand off between federal assistance and the labor market. As support from the March stimulus law wanes, they say, more and more Americans are set to return to work, drawing paychecks that will power consumer spending in the place of government aid.

My outsiders view: there ought to have been a gradual stepdown, an additional program, possibly limiting receivers, for a few months to let people adjust.

Possibly worth noting; the BBC appear to be posting “regular” fact check articles on President Biden. Something I don’t recall them doing for the DFO. Maybe because it’s much easier and quicker to do? Still odd though.

Mic drop: Republican senator’s claim of button to silence Biden draws chuckles
James Risch questioned the secretary of state about an official supposedly able to mute the president – ‘Who is that person?’
Samera Sadique
Thu 16 Sep 2021 22.15 BST
The secretary of state, Antony Blinken, fought back laughter on Capitol Hill on Tuesday as the Republican senator James Risch relentlessly questioned him about a rumor that someone on the White House staff “pushes the button and cuts [Joe Biden] off mid-sentence” with a wireless device.
“Somebody in the White House has authority to press the button and cut off the president’s speaking ability and sound. Who is that person?” asked Risch, who was also former lieutenant governor of Idaho.
In video of the testimony, Blinken tries to restrain his amusement as Risch repeatedly asks him different iterations of the same question during a hearing that was meant to focus on the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“Anyone who knows the president, including members of the committee knows that he speaks very clearly and very deliberately for himself,” Blinken said. “No one else does.”
“Are you saying that there’s no one in the White House that can cut him off?” Risch asked again. “It’s been widely reported that somebody has the ability to push the button and cut off his sound and stop him from speaking,” Risch persisted. “Who is that person?”
“There is no such person,” Blinken said in response with a chuckle. “Again, the president speaks for himself, makes all of the strategic decisions informed by the best advice that he can get from the people around.”
If that weren’t enough, Risch asked the question again, and Blinken repeated his answer.

A thing not getting much attention is that Biden just put another public defender into a lifetime seat on a powerful U.S. appeals court. That makes 4.
Huge shift from the corporate attorneys + prosecutors typically picked for these powerful jobs.

Re: #46 President Joseph "Joe" Robinette Biden Jr. & Vice President Kamala Devi Harris
Where is Kamala? I don't know why Kamala isn't out there selling the points of Biden's policies. I want them explained in terms that people understand; ie., what the policies will do for YOU; how they will make your life and your families' lives better; how dental care and vision care will make elders' health better.
For that matter, where's Pete?
I think all the policies are getting lost in the weeds.
I've cut back on watching the news, but I'm not seeing anyone out there doing this.
Or are Manchin and Sinema sucking all the air out of the room?
