Re: Earthquakes and/or Volcanoes
At the Iceland volcano yesterday, a couple of idiots had to be helicoptered off of the lava field. Also, webcam video showed another idiot (or one of the two previously mentioned idiots, it's unclear) who actually made it up to the rim of the crater and had a look around.
Video is in the article (in Icelandic) at the link. Idiot is a wee, tiny, human shaped figure in silhouette at about the center of the rim.

Volcano erupts on La Palma in Spain's Canary Islands
By Vasco Cotovio, Martin Goillandeau and Jeevan Ravindran, CNN
Updated 1839 GMT (0239 HKT) September 19, 2021
(CNN)The Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, one of Spain's Canary Islands, erupted Sunday, after several earthquakes were felt over the weekend.
The Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan) tweeted news of the eruption at 3:24 p.m. local time (10:24 a.m. ET) and urged members of the public to stay away from the area.
In a video posted on Twitter by the institute, a large plume of smoke is seen emerging from afar.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has postponed his departure to New York for the UN General Assembly in order to travel to La Palma because of the volcanic eruption.
"I am at the moment heading to the Canary Islands because of the seismic evolution, to see first-hand the situation in La Palma, the coordination of the means and the protocols that have been activated," Sánchez tweeted Sunday.
The head of the local government Angel Torres called the first images of the eruption "impressive."
Torres tweeted that he would be at the Head Committee for Civil Protection and Attention for Volcanic Risk Emergencies to assess the situation in the afternoon.
The island was on alert for a possible volcanic eruption after several earthquakes were felt over the weekend.
Earlier in the day, the volcanology institute wrote in a statement on Facebook that more than 25,000 earthquakes had been detected in the past nine days around the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

Re: Earthquakes and/or Volcanoes
There was a 4.4 earthquake 12 miles away, in Carson, CA, home to refineries of all sorts, while I was house sitting for my sister in Hermosa Beach. There was absolutely no damage, not even pictures askew, at her condo but it was weird to watch, like it rolled through her living room, each 3-4’ section shaking in turn. And then it was gone. I’m used to shakes, not rolls, the whole house shaking and rattling, not rolling.

Just felt the first earthquake I've experienced in Australia in almost 40 years. They are not uncommon, I just haven't been near any.
The house had a right good shaking, but no damage.

The earthquake that was
Well, that was an exciting and slightly scary morning. We are going to close this blog here, but you can continue to follow any new developments on the earthquake via our Australian news liveblog, here.
Let’s just recap on what has happened:
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake was recorded just outside of Woods Point, near Mansfield, at 9.15am. Tremors were felt as far afield as Sydney, Dubbo, and Launceston — all about 700km away.
It is the strongest earthquake reported in Victoria, and possibly the strongest experienced in the state in up to 200 years.
There have been 46 reports of building damage, mainly in Melbourne and Mansfield. The wall of a building on Chapel Street, Windsor, collapsed, and there were reports of damage to brickwork and cracked pavement across the city.
Mansfield Shire Council has not reported any significant damage at this stage. Locals said it felt like ‘a big truck coming through the building’.
The Collins St falcons were upset.
We will continue to bring you any major developments as they happen over at the Australia news live blog. Thanks for your company, stay safe, and beware of any aftershocks.

Crete earthquake: Hotels evacuated as ‘terrifying’ 6.0-magnitude tremor shakes buildings on Greek island

Crete earthquake: 6.0-magnitude tremor hits Greek island, says EMSC
Hotels and schools have been evacuated as a “terrifying” 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Greek island of Crete this morning.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that a 6.0 magnitude quake struck at 9.17 am with an epicentre 16 miles south south east of the city of Heraklion and a depth of 6.2 miles. A number of aftershocks have also struck the area, with the strongest one registering a magnitude of 4.6.
Local media in Crete have reported that some old buildings had experienced structural damage, with walls collapsing in villages near the epicentre.
Vassilis Lambrinos, the mayor of Heraklion, told Greek Skai television that there were no immediate reports from emergency services of any injuries or severe damage, but added that all schools had been evacuated to check for structural damage.
Holidaymakers were also evacuated from their hotels

Strong quake hits Greece's biggest island of Crete, one person killed
By Angeliki Koutantou and George Georgiopoulos
ATHENS, Sept 27 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake measuring 5.8 shook Greece's largest island Crete on Monday and one person was killed when a church dome collapsed, authorities said.
The quake, which sent people out of their homes and public buildings and caused considerable damage, was described by a Greek seismologist, Efthymios Lekkas, as a "thunderbolt" with strong aftershocks.
A man died when the dome of a church in the town of Arkalochori caved in during renovation works, a police official said. Civil protection authorities said nine people were injured in the quake, which damaged many buildings.
The tremor prompted many people in Crete's main city Heraklion to rush outdoors. Schoolchildren were told to leave their classrooms, gathering in schoolyards and town squares.
"It felt quite strong and lasted many seconds," a local mayor told Skai television.
The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the quake's magnitude reached 5.8 and its epicentre was 23 kilometres (14 miles) northwest of Arvi in southeastern Crete, at a depth of 10 km.
Earlier, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the earthquake measured 6.5, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) put it at 6.0.

ETA from later news item: further damages were to old unoccupied buildings in the Arkalochori area (center mountain ridge, very near the epicenter), some nine people reported injured over the island.

Authorities lock down coastal area in La Palma as lava approaches sea
Reuters
LA PALMA, Spain, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Emergency authorities early on Monday ordered people in an area on the eastern shore of La Palma island to lock down as the lava gushing from the Cumbre Vieja volcano approaches the sea.
The 1,250 Celsius degree lava may touch the Atlantic Ocean in the coming hours, likely causing explosions and send clouds of toxic gases over the island, the Canary Islands emergency services warned on Monday morning.
"Population will have to follow the authorities guidance and remain in their home with doors and windows closed," the services said on their Twitter account.
People on the coastal areas of San Borondon, Marina Alta and Baja and La Condesa were ordered to lock down.

Note: this is on the south western side of the island, away from the tourist hotspots. The local airport, main hub for tourists arriving and leaving the island has been closed.

my interpretation: not "large fire" but simply hot lava spreading over cold and wet lava in the lower valley, the "hole" likely filled with a pool of water, generating steam that carries up the burning gases

Tokyo jolted by strongest earthquake since 2011 disaster
STAFF REPORT, KYODO
Oct 8, 2021
Tokyo and surrounding prefectures were jolted by a strong earthquake on Thursday night, leaving more than 20 people injured and bringing the strongest shaking to the capital’s central wards since the Great East Japan Earthquake disaster in 2011.
Following the magnitude 5.9 quake, which occurred at 10:41 p.m., TV footage showed a home on fire, water leaking from manholes, a partially derailed passenger train and darkened railway stations full of stranded passengers.
The magnitude was originally reported as 6.1 and later downgraded by the Meteorological Agency.
The agency warned that a quake of similar intensity could occur within the week, with an official estimating a 10% to 20% chance based on previous temblors.
