Although the view is spectacular, we didn’t buy this place only for the view. Last night between family, and friends so close they might as well be family, we had 17 people and five dogs (none ours) here. There was eating, drinking, talking, movies, card games, Legos for the littles ones, all the things we haven’t really been able to do since Covid.

Another beautiful day in Maybelot. There was something stunning about this rain that I tried to capture with my camera but couldn’t. There were virtually no clouds directly above me, and the individual raindrops sparkled like diamonds in the sun.

:yeahthat: Floridians call that "liquid sunshine" and yes, it is really beautiful. The rain is coming down in an area where the sun is shining brightly. That's a phenomenon that happens quite a bit in Florida.

Welp… we just lost power. The lights flickered, then we heard a pop. Appears to be the transformer that serves only this house and the cabin. Since we appear to be the only two properties involved, and there are larger weather-related outages, it might be awhile before it’s restored.

Generator?
In Arlington, the transformer for the 4 houses on our side of the curve blew regularly on accounta squirrels. I never understood why the power company didn’t cover the opening, but they didnt for the10 years we lived there. Every. Summer.

We have a portable generator. If the power wasn’t back by this am, we would have brought it up from the barn and plugged in the fridge. Power came back on around 2 am.

We made do. We sat in the living room by candlelight, drank a beer, listening to Peril on audible.

Big doings here at Maybelot.

After nearly two years, the MGB is going back on the road today. We had to send the engine block out to be re-bored, and the head was cracked so we had to get a new one. The valves were good, but everything else inside the engine is new.

We also made a few improvements** to the car, including: electronic power steering; fuel injection; a cold-air intake; a new five-speed manual transmission. Other minor improvements include new seats (from a Pontiac Fiero, rebranded, of course); and a visible third brake light on the trunk.

** Purists might disagree that these are improvements, but it’s nice to pull up to a red light and not smell gasoline.

Hopefully, the work included replacing anything that had the name "Lucas" on it. Otherwise, you will soon be parked on the side of the road at an inconvenient time.

Yes! There were some of the original Lucas fuses, and they all got replaced. All that wiring on the inside is going to get redone. We have a new wiring harness and it’s all going to get cleaned up, but that’s a project for later.

Way back in 1972-3 I was the proud owner of a 1964 Jaguar XKE convertible. I made frequent stops on the side of the road when a Lucas part got finicky. It was most often the Lucas electric fuel pump that would decide to sputter. My roadside remedy was to take the copper hammer for loosening the knockoffs and beat on the gas tank until it would hum again. Man, I wish I still had that car.

We’re the third owners. The previous owner had all this high-performance racing stuff on there (and didn’t do it right and hosed it up, which is why we had to send the engine out). We’ve taken it back to regular road use. It’s quiet, and with the fuel injection and catalytic converter it’s a lot cleaner.

Took it for a short ride today. Tomorrow it goes in for inspection. We could put antique plates on and skip the inspections, but then we’re limited in how far we can drive it. We want everything to work safely anyway, so it’s no big deal to get it inspected.
