My home was quite musical. Mom was a coloratura soprano who sang everyday to keep in shape for directing the church choir and singing at weddings, funerals, and in community theater. Dad played the trombone and had been the marching band leader his freshman year at Georgia Tech. My older brother played the drums. I played the piano as did my mother, sister and brother. We heard opera, musical theater, classical, Sousa, Dixieland, country western (Dad loved Eddie Arnold), rock and roll including Cream, the Beatles, etc. No Elvis. :D

Frater I*I wrote: Tue Mar 02, 2021 9:19 pm Loony Tunes helped my classical enjoyment, but my education came from my father [a marching band alum] who had a literal closet full of 4 track reel to reel tapes of classical music. Every Sunday as a kid the house stereo belonged to him, and symphonies would be played, he had a lot of opera, but my brother and I didn't get that often because mom had veto power over it [I'd later get to hear it with headphones]. One thing my mother didn't get veto power over, that she wanted, was marches, dad being a fan of Sousa [his main instrument being the Sousaphone].

If you're wondering, and I know you aren't, Saturdays were house cleaning day, and the stereo belonged to mom, which ment oldies from the 50s and 60s. I still say Elvis is overrated...

[ducks rotten fruit]
I'm getting the impression that I may have been raised a little different than others in terms of exposure to classical music. People don't normally have classical music happening 24/7 due to their parents, one a university professor in music and another a part-time music teacher at another college? People here, when they were 13, wouldn't finish their children's chorus part in a rehearsal for Tosca and then sit next to their tubist father (and follow along in an orchestral score) for the rest of the rehearsal? People don't, while traveling from one rehearsal to another during their high school days, discuss possible ways of conducting some Brahms Symphony or how to identify the difference between Haydn and Mozart, just by listening?

I just thought that's what everybody does.

I'm pretty sure I've posted this before, it's my thread --SO..

My mother died in 1969 of childhood leukemia (19yo). I was a toddler -- never knew her.

Yeah, her name was Jeannie.
Today, they could have likely cured her. (Saint Judes's Research Hospital)

You know, there are some younger people on the forum that don't know all the references.

Judging by the questions asked on Nextdoor and a couple of local forums I haunt, yes. Yes they are.

On ND yesterday, someone was asking about plant identification and they attached a photo of an indoor plant against a blank white wall and then apologized for the blurry photo. It was literally a greenish blob in a black pot-ish shaped thing. You couldn't take 2 more seconds to snap another photo? The responses were pretty funny though. They went from earnest guesses, to wilder guesses, to completely feral guesses. Logged on this morning and the entire thread has been deleted by the OP.

Posted this song before, I think, but am really enjoying the behind the scenes of how this fun video came together
It's total stage produced theater. It's what I love.

And here is the full production, again.

A group I've been involved with for many years gives grants to musicians and I was on the grant panel this year. One of our recipients won a Grammy last night! The New Orleans Nightcrawlers won for Best Regional Roots Album and we're all over the moon about it.

This is thanks to 'Dave from down under' -- because every time I see his username, this song starts playing in my head. I love the song, but I don't like it stuck in my head. Cheers!
