Have to hand it to the Shinnecock Nation. After centuries of the kind of exploitation, oppression and downright abuse that have befallen most Native Americans, they have Long Island’s power elite reeling.
Snip-
To gain the economic self-sufficiency that had eluded them for so long, the Shinnecock Nation stood up against one well-financed lawsuit after another, launched by encroaching private parties and government agencies on every level. The Nation shockingly erected a revenue-producing billboard, 61 feet high, on the Nation’s property along Montauk Highway, and they now seek to operate a gambling casino.
At first their ambition for a casino was dismissed, but here’s where the analogy of the race between the tortoise and the hare characterizes the Shinnecock Nation’s determination. They quietly sought project backers, at first without success. They sought a site for their dream at several L.I. locations, but each fell through. Undaunted and focused, they suddenly showed themselves to be enormously skillful. The power elite who casually underestimated them are suddenly being outmaneuvered, and they don’t like it, not at all.
The Shinnecocks finally secured the partnership of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, well established in the gaming industry with their Hard Rock and casino chain. The well-heeled Tri-State Partners of New Jersey has also joined the venture. Then the U.S. National Gaming Commission approved a gaming ordinance specifically for the Shinnecocks, for a 76,000-square-foot class II gaming facility on their territory on Montauk Highway.

Truck crashes through front wall of house on West Main Street

At first this seemed very strange since West Main St at that point is straight and flat. Checking Google Maps I found that opposite this house is a long driveway or private road. The truck must have come from that road and for whatever reason failed to stop. The crash occurred at about 1:10 p.m. The driver and a passenger were trapped inside the pickup truck. Emergency personnel were able to extricate the driver quickly but the passenger remained pinned inside.
A resident said she had just walked out of the kitchen when she heard what sounded like an explosion as the vehicle came through the wall and into the kitchen. Her 12-year-old son was in the other front room, she said. Both were shaken but uninjured and were able to safely evacuate.
Emergency workers descended on the scene of the crash and worked to stabilize the vehicle and free the passenger trapped in side.
The condition of the passenger is not known at this time.
Riverhead EMS called for a Suffolk County Police Medevac helicopter to fly one of the victims to Stony Brook. The helicopter landed in the parking lot of Tanger 3. RVAC transported one patient to the the helicopter.

The tea is a lovely color. I wonder what it is? I always split my scone and put the clotted cream inside, but she just put it on the outside. Our favorite tea house is on Vancouver Island, not at The Empress, although that's also excellent. I can't remember the name of it, and it's not as fancy as The Empress, but the tea was beyond outstanding. High tea is probably one of the things I miss about not being able to travel. Not all of our travel includes it, but some of it does, and if it's offered, I'm partaking.

Funny story about High Tea at The Empress. I took my West Coast daughter on a trip to Vancouver Island a number of years ago and one of the stops was to The Empress. She looked at the menu, gasped, and said, “Mom! The price for this High Tea is more than dinner was last night!!” And she was right, it was.

My father had been sent to a RCAF base on Vancouver Island during WWII in order to learn to fly a specific type of long-range bomber. So one year we went to Canada to a) visit relatives and b) revisit the old RCAF base. We'd been promised high tea at the Empress, but after a glance at the menu, we were told that we would be having bread and margarine along the promenade, instead. 30 years later I took myself to the Empress for a 3 day holiday, and had High Tea.Sunrise wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 12:19 amAndyinPA wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 5:35 pm The tea is a lovely color. My own funny story about the Empress High Tea. On one of our visits to Victoria, we stayed at The Empress. We had the high tea in the afternoon and ate in the African-themed restaurant that evening, and we paid more for the tea than dinner at that restaurant! In all fairness, I think we ordered the champagne high tea, which we've never done again. I think the other tearoom is the White Heather.

This beach is on the north shore of the North Fork about 4 miles from our cottage. From there you can see Connecticut across the Long Island Sound. A great place to watch the sun set.
The Iron Pier is long gone. It was built to serve boats that would take firewood from the North Fork to Manhattan. Sadly no one checked the water depth which proved to be too shallow for the boats.

Chowder makes the perfect March meal: It’s warming, hearty and creamy and the variations on the North Fork are pretty endless. Here are some of our favorites.

We have eaten at 7 of these restaurants. Seems like 100 years ago in another life.
Not to be a spoil sport but some of these restaurants don't open for the season until April.

Re: Meanwhile on the North Fork...........
They have a DC-3 plane wreck in Iceland that people trek out quite a distance on the beach to see. It's been there since 1973, and there's not much left of it now. It's on a lovely black sand beach, but I don't get why it's such a high point to visit in Iceland, where every piece of scenery is fantastic.
The ship wrecks are much more interesting near the North Fork. Those I would walk out to see. The plane wreck in Iceland? Nope.

Trivia question-Where was the US Navy's first submarine base?
Well, since I am posting this in the North Fork thread the answer has to be the North Fork. In the tiny hamlet of New Suffolk.
