Very hot topic here. The union's official position is that Nippon should not take over USS, but a lot of union members don't want to see jobs leave the valley.

Biden to block oil drilling across 625 million acres of U.S. waters
The president will sign memorandums prohibiting future oil and gas leasing across parts of the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Northern Bering Sea.

By Maxine Joselow

President Joe Biden will move Monday to block all future oil and gas drilling across more than 625 million acres of federal waters — equivalent to nearly a quarter of the total land area of the United States, according to two people briefed on the decision who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the announcement is not yet public.

The action underscores how Biden is racing to cement his legacy on climate change and conservation in his last weeks in office. President-elect Donald Trump, who has described his energy policy as “drill, baby, drill,” is likely to work with congressional Republicans to challenge the decision.

Biden will issue two memorandums that prohibit future federal oil and gas leasing across large swaths of the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Northern Bering Sea in Alaska, the two people said. The oil and gas industry has long prized the eastern Gulf of Mexico in particular, viewing the area as a key part of its offshore production plans.

Some details of the expected decision were first reported by Bloomberg News. The total acreage and the inclusion of the Northern Bering Sea have not previously been reported.

OMG! I've been a fan like since forever when he was on late night comedy on Channel 5. I seem to recall back in the days when predicting snow in the Puget Sound area was next to impossible and how much fun they made of the weather guys. Technology has improved since then

I loved Almost Live! I think it was aired on a local Las Vegas station. Having lived in Tacoma from 1977-82, I appreciated the local humor.

What a fun show that was. Lots of other worthy recipients today as well. I think it's CNN's Boris Sanchez that's a huge fan of Bill Nye and geeks out anytime they've had it on air. Pity I've sworn off cable news for new, might be fun to see his reporting on this.

Biden administration expands benefits for veterans with cancer exposed to burn pits

The Biden administration expanded benefits for veterans with cancer believed to be linked to burn pits where tens of thousands of service members were exposed to toxic waste.

The new step, announced by the White House on Wednesday, expands the PACT Act, a 2022 law that widened access to benefits and care for veterans exposed to burn pits used to dispose of trash and waste on military bases.

The new step lowers the burden for veterans deployed to the Middle East during the Gulf War and after 9/11 to prove certain cancers are related to their service. If they are approved for disability benefits, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) fully covers their related cancer treatment.

PACT "has been transformational and has enabled VA to serve more veterans, more quickly than ever before," President Joe Biden said in a statement.
Biden believes his son Beau's cancer came from Iraq burn pits

For Biden, the law also has a personal dimension. The president has said he believes the brain cancer that killed his son Beau at at age 46 in 2015 stemmed from exposure to burn pits while he served in Iraq.

DHS extends TPS for Salvadorans, potentially complicating Trump’s plans

by Rafael Bernal -
01/10/25 10:39 AM ET

The Biden administration on Friday extended a key humanitarian program for El Salvadoran nationals in a move that could complicate the incoming Trump administration’s plans to do away with long-term immigrant protections.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of El Salvador until Sept. 9, 2026, allowing the program’s beneficiaries to start re-registering for the 18-month period that begins on March 10 of this year.

Under TPS, nationals of designated countries are allowed to live and work in the United States. Countries are designated by DHS under advisement by the State Department based on whether conditions on the ground allow for safe repatriations.

But the TPS program has come under criticism from groups who want to reduce immigration because many designations — El Salvador’s in particular — have been summarily extended for decades.

According to DHS, the current extension is warranted because of storms in 2023 and 2024 that affected areas of El Salvador that were ravaged by earthquakes in 2001, the original cause of the TPS designation that was extended Friday. El Salvador’s first TPS designation, the first designation since the program was enacted to law, came in 1990 amid the country’s civil war.

Nationals of El Salvador who have been continuously living in the United States since before February 13, 2001 are eligible for TPS. According to DHS, there are approximately 234,000 existing beneficiaries who are eligible to re-register.

TPS beneficiaries receive Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) to allow them to legally work in the United States. Existing EADs for re-registering El Salvadoran beneficiaries will be valid through March 9, 2026 to avoid gaps in employment if new EADs are not delivered before then.

According to the National Immigration Forum, there are about 860,000 foreign nationals protected by TPS, including about 180,000 El Salvadorans.

Biden designates two national monuments, touts climate legacy
The move bans oil and gas drilling, mining, and other industrial activities on vast swaths of public land in California.

President Joe Biden on Tuesday established two massive new national monuments in California and highlighted his environmental initiatives as some of the defining achievements of a presidency that will end in less than a week.

“We’ve been carrying out the most aggressive climate agenda in the history of the world,” Biden told nearly 300 people gathered in the White House’s East Room. Without directly mentioning President-elect Donald Trump and his allies, he added: “We don’t have to choose between the environment and the economy or between conservation and clean energy — we can do both at the same time.”

Biden signed proclamations at the event designating the roughly 624,000-acre Chuckwalla National Monument and the roughly 224,000-acre Sáttítla Highlands National Monument. The move bars oil and gas drilling, mining, and other industrial activity on vast swaths of public land that several Native American tribes have considered sacred for thousands of years.

Chuckwalla will be named after the chuckwalla lizards that roam the junction of the Mojave, Sonoran and Colorado deserts. It will be immediately south of Joshua Tree National Park, which ranked as the ninth-most-visited national park in 2023, attracting more than 3.2 million people that year.

Sáttítla is the Pit River Tribe’s name for an area in northeastern California near the Oregon border. The area is often called the headwaters of California because of its crucial role in supplying clean water from volcanic aquifers to communities across the state.

JANUARY 17, 2025
Statement from President Joe Biden on the Equal Rights Amendment
HOME
BRIEFING ROOM
STATEMENTS AND RELEASES
I have supported the Equal Rights Amendment for more than 50 years, and I have long been clear that no one should be discriminated against based on their sex. We, as a nation, must affirm and protect women’s full equality once and for all.

On January 27, 2020, the Commonwealth of Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The American Bar Association (ABA) has recognized that the Equal Rights Amendment has cleared all necessary hurdles to be formally added to the Constitution as the 28th Amendment. I agree with the ABA and with leading legal constitutional scholars that the Equal Rights Amendment has become part of our Constitution.

It is long past time to recognize the will of the American people. In keeping with my oath and duty to Constitution and country, I affirm what I believe and what three-fourths of the states have ratified: the 28th Amendment is the law of the land, guaranteeing all Americans equal rights and protections under the law regardless of their sex.

Joe Biden will be the new Jimmy Carter, sadly unappreciated in office. But I believe, over time, his reputation as a good human will be his legacy.

Oh, no doubt. But until the Archivist publishes the ratification, the ERA isn't part of the U.S. Constitution.

Yeah, it's all well and good, but the Archivist is the arbiter.

And wasn't there a ratification time limit on it anyway?
