Take Social Security, Medicare, Defense (a conservative never-cut area), and interest payments on the debt; you are left with, um, 2 trillion. He would have to cut everything else, including federal programs administered by the states.

Fire breaks don't mean shit when you have 100 mph winds blowing fires around. Look at Malibu - some of those houses abut the ocean on one side and have a 4 lane highway on the other.

'Cesspool of lies': Critics groan as Musk floated to buy TikTok

https://www.rawstory.com/elon-musk-tikt ... um=bluesky
Social media users collectively groaned over a new report that Chinese officials are weighing their options in light of a looming ban on TikTok — including having tech billionaire Elon Musk buy the popular social media app's U.S. operation.

People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg News on Monday evening that officials in Beijing would prefer that the massively popular app — which has about 1 billion monthly active users worldwide — remain owned by ByteDance. However, In April 2024, Congress passed legislation, citing national security concerns, that was signed into law by President Joe Biden giving ByteDance nine months to sell the app to a US-approved buyer.

The legislation could lead to a nationwide ban if the company isn't sold by Jan. 19 — a day before President-elect Donald Trump is set to return to the Oval Office.

:snippity:

One proposal includes having Musk's social media site X take control of TikTok US, according to the report.

Musk has said TikTok ought to remain available in the U.S.

“In my opinion, TikTok should not be banned in the USA, even though such a ban may benefit the X platform,” he wrote on X. “Doing so would be contrary to freedom of speech and expression. It is not what America stands for.”

SEC sues Elon Musk over late disclosure of Twitter share purchases
The agency alleged Musk underpaid for the social network by $150 million because he didn’t promptly disclose his accumulation of a more than 5 percent stake.

Updated January 14, 2025 at 8:28 p.m. ESTtoday at 8:28 p.m. EST
By Faiz Siddiqui

The Securities and Exchange Commission sued Elon Musk on Tuesday, alleging the world’s richest person failed to publicly disclose his acquisition of Twitter shares on time in early 2022.

The delay resulted in the Tesla CEO buying a significant stake in the social media company at an artificial $150 million discount, the agency alleges, ahead of his acquisition of the platform late that year.

That action also harmed investors who would have been able to sell their shares at higher prices had Musk’s involvement been publicly known, the agency said. Investors who acquire more than 5 percent of a public company are required to disclose their stakes to the SEC within 10 days of hitting that threshold. The SEC claims that Musk made his stake in Twitter public 11 days after that deadline.

“Because Musk failed to timely disclose his beneficial ownership, he was able to make these purchases from the unsuspecting public at artificially low prices,” the SEC alleged.

The SEC said in a statement Tuesday that Musk “saved at least $150 million at the expense of Twitter shareholders.”

The tech entrepreneur alleged in December that the agency had sent him a settlement demand related to the disclosures, which stemmed from a probe into his late 2022 acquisition of Twitter that examined his share purchases for potential fraud. In a letter Musk posted to X last month, his attorney Alex Spiro appeared to claim the matter was politically motivated.

Spiro took aim at the SEC’s lawsuit in a statement Tuesday, decrying it as a last-ditch enforcement effort by an outgoing administration.

“Today’s action is an admission by the SEC that ... they cannot bring an actual case — because Mr musk has done nothing wrong and Everyone sees this sham for what it is,” he wrote.

Didn't see us talk about this but ny times is reporting that Elon Musk is getting an office at the white house. Wonder if it'll replace the chief of staff office or if Trump will get moved to that office.

Paywalled, but the article I saw yesterday said it would be in the Eisenhower office building, not the actual White House, but right next door.

Exclusive: Elon Musk May Be the Latest Leader of D.C.’s Line Hotel
The president-elect’s best new buddy hopes to snap up the hot Adams Morgan address

https://dc.eater.com/2025/1/17/24346186 ... line-hotel
In huge pre-inauguration news, tech titan Elon Musk is slated to be the highest bidder on D.C.’s trendy Line hotel. The recently inducted member of President-elect Donald Trump’s billionaire boys club plans to turn the desirable Northwest digs with 220 rooms into a “private social club” of sorts, according to multiple sources familiar with the deal.

A previously announced public auction for the former church-turned-posh property (1770 Euclid Street NW) is scheduled for Thursday, January 23 — just three days after Musk’s BFF reassumes power in the same city. Musk is poised to lead the newly coined Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) once Trump moves back into the White House.

The high-profile CEO is behind behemoth brands like rocket-blasting SpaceX, e-car company Tesla, and the social media platform formerly known as Twitter (X), so it would only make sense that he wants to try the hospitality industry on for size next.

Hip LA-born brand Line, which also has locations in San Francisco and Austin, quickly cemented its status as one of D.C.’s hottest dining destinations after making its anticipated debut in late 2017.

The collection of opening restaurants included Rake’s Progress — James Beard Award-winning chef Spike Gjerde’s mid-Atlantic marvel fueled on wood-burning flames — and two lobby-level spots from acclaimed D.C. restaurateur Erik Bruner-Yang: all-day Brothers and Sisters and Spoken English. None of them resurfaced post-pandemic.

No Goodbyes entered the fold in 2021 and remains the Line’s only restaurant. The lobby-wide establishment is fully open from morning to night, with an excellent cocktail program by D.C. bar vet Lukas Smith. It’s unclear what the standalone building’s future food-and-beverage chapter holds under the potential takeover.

The timing is interesting, considering a competing player in D.C.’s private membership space is days away from its long-awaited arrival right across from the White House; Ned’s Club Washington D.C., the pricey newcomer with Soho House status and a dream hospitality team in place, is slated to open on January 31. :snippity:

Will his office be on an upper floor? With windows that open?
