Calling the school first would be cutting out the middleman.
As the school could start it’s standard (only in America) School Shooter Response which would have on site actions to limit (hahaha sob) casualties and to co-ordinate with the police when they (eventually) arrive.

FWIW, I'm not ready to believe this yet
None of the reporting I've read says that the mom called that day. Nor are the cops quoted.

Maybe I just haven't read the right articles.

Interesting question, but it's not clear to me that either option is obviously the better one. I wouldn't fault her for the choice she made.

She probably didn't think the principal would shoot him on sight.

Kentucky highway shooting suspect believed to have been found dead

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c05gpz2jzpqo
Police say they believe they have found the body of a suspected gunman who went on a highway shooting spree that wounded five people in Kentucky almost two weeks ago.
The body was found during the manhunt in Laurel County, along with accessories that have led police to conclude it is that of suspect Joseph Couch, authorities said in a press conference on Wednesday evening.
Officials have been searching for Mr Couch since 7 September, when the 32-year-old is alleged to have shot at drivers on Interstate 75 before disappearing into the remote area.
Police say they are still working to formally identify the remains.
Officials said the body was found just after 15:30 local time (20:30 BST) when two state troopers and two civilians ran into each other while searching for the suspect.

Mass shooting in Birmingham’s 5 Points South leaves 4 dead, dozens injured by gunfire

https://www.al.com/news/2024/09/shootin ... e-say.html
Gunfire erupted in Birmingham’s Five Points South entertainment area Saturday night, leaving four people dead and at least 21 others injured.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the shooting happened just after 11 p.m. in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South.

Initial reports indicate club patrons were waiting in line outside Hush, a hookah and cigar lounge on Magnolia Avenue, when the shooting took place. Witnesses said at least some of the gunfire sounded like it came from a weapon outfitted with a “switch” that converts a gun to full automatic.

Detectives are working to confirm it was a drive-by or if the shooters were on foot, police said. :snippity:
Investigators believe multiple shooters fired numerous shots into a group of people on Magnolia Avenue.

No arrests have been made.

BHam is where my ex-wife ended up, and hookah bars became a late-in-the-marriage passion for her so now I'm a little concerned. We've been out of contact for a few years, but that wouldn't mean I want harm to her. Now I have to read reports for the names of any dead or injured.
But the sunshine aye shall light the sky,
As round and round we run;
And the truth shall ever come uppermost,
And justice shall be done.

It seems as though a couple of the folks killed were targeted (and the others were just wrong place/wrong time). Two of the victims had been arrested for murder themselves (unrelated cases). One was acquitted and the other never made it to trial due to reluctance/death of witnesses.

The local cops said that the community didn't need to worry - it wasn't a random drive-by, and if you weren't involved in the criminal world, you'd be ok (I guess just watch where you go; idk if non-criminals at the lounge knew that criminals like to hang there). Bham has a high murder rate, but most of it is this type of crime - crooks killing each other.
Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest. - Mark Twain
