Why is that an issue/problem? I am from southeast Ohio (real) Appalachia. My dad shot squirrels, he was a hunter, and we ate them at the dinner table. He did not want them to go to waste, so we ate them.

That’s what I was going to say. My husband’s best friend growing up in northeast Iowa would shoot squirrels and his friend’s mom made a great squirrel stew.
Yes, a squirrel stew sounds good. My dad fixed the squirrels. Mom didn't have anything to do with them. He soaked them in a dilute vinegar solution to lessen any gamey flavor. He roasted them, and they came out a bit dry. You had to be careful not to bite into the shotgun pellets.
I think squirrel stew would be better.

Having lived my whole life in the Upper Midwest - Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota - I can't imagine any state in which people don't hunt or fish for free, fresh food. Woods, streams, grassland, farmland, whatever. As long as it's legal and in season, it just makes sense. Deer hunting season certainly is a thing up here as is the fishing opener.
The only thing I would consider backwoods, hillbilly behavior is stopping on the highway to pick up roadkill. But I know people even do that.

So the latest outrage is the supposed story about a Haitian person stealing and eating a kitten, in Springfield, OH. The debunks I've seen include: the woman was not Haitian, not in Springfield, no kitten stolen. It sounds like a mentally ill woman having a crisis (she seems to be Black so they nuts made her Haitian in order that she be a Scary Illegal Immigrant). It's a terrible situation for that poor woman and I hope she gets help. Having someone with severe mental illness in our family, we've seen lots of very strange behavior and it's incredibly difficult to deal with.

In the last several weeks (that means last night), my office has received many inquiries (that means one) from actual residents (that means he doesn't know, probably not) of Springfield who've said their neighbors' pets or local wildlife were abducted (Okay. I'm stopping right there. We just entered the shark battery zone. That means everything after this point is ridiculous.)
Tim Miller did a short (12') take on this latest hilarity on the Bulwark this morning/last night. The highlight is that he compared it to the kitty litter boxes in school rooms (for the furries, y'know).
He actually got so pissed off at the kitty litter CT that he researched it, which involved contacting countless posters of this crap, asking them to name one damn school that was doing this. No one shocked that he came up empty. Every had heard it first-hand--from someone else.
This is first-water racism and hate-mongering. By MAGA. By what used to be the GOP and is now better known as MAGA Electeds. I'm sure the media will pooh-pooh it.
FYI, my dental hygenist assured me that the litter box story was true; that schools in our district in upstate NY had them. Her neighbor told her. I suggested she check it out for real. JHK.
There actually was a news story years ago - 15, 20 years - where immigrants were hunting or fishing in city parks, but I think that was just ignorance of the law. They were doing what was permitted back home. I just don’t know the right search terms to find that old of a story, and it was more of a curiosity than an outrage.

I have family that live in the Cincinnati area. They tell me that neighbors have been reporting that their couches have been abducted. The couches are being found in abandoned fields smeared with a white crusty substance. DNA testing indicates an Appalachian hillbilly is the culprit.
