Oh that is sad. My father knew Chi Chi Rodriguez and thought he was one of the nicest, most down to earth persons he'd ever met.

I knew him slightly when I lived in Kailua, where his last cookie shop was. And yes, he had an area for kids to read, set up with books and chairs. He was a good guy.

Champion racehorse Black Caviar dies a day before her 18th birthday following laminitis disease
Champion racehorse Black Caviar has died a day before her 18th birthday.

A statement on Saturday on behalf of Black Caviar's owners announced the death.

The Australian star captivated the nation and retired in 2013 with 25 wins from 25 starts, taking $7,953,936 in prize money.

"She was a remarkable horse who gave us all the ride of a lifetime and wonderful memories," trainer Peter Moody said in the statement.

Moody later revealed the cause of death was laminitis, a painful disease of the foot that eventually progresses to a point that a horse can no longer walk.

Black Caviar: Best of the best
Born at Gilgai Farm in Nagambie on 18 August, 2006, Black Caviar captivated the public’s imagination in 2009, arriving on the scene as a two-year-old, starting twice and winning both, by five and six lengths respectively.

She continued to dominate from those first starts, taking racing fans and her connections on an amazing journey until her retirement in April 2013. By then she was undefeated in 25 starts, including 15 at Group 1 level.

A sensational horse who ignited a spark in Australian racing some say had not been seen for decades, Black Caviar became a cultural phenomenon. People clamoured to watch her race and witness her incredible performances. Her fluent sprint and impossibly long stride powered by her famous rear end was a joy to watch and she drew crowds that hadn’t been seen at tracks for years.

...

Shortly after Black Caviar won so bravely at Royal Ascot an invitation arrived for her owners to attend Windsor Castle for dinner. It was a long way to travel for dinner, but we all went! It was a beautiful evening where we enjoyed pre-dinner drinks surrounded by huge floral arrangements, and were entertained by talented musicians as we chatted with everyone including members of the Royal family, before being seated in the adjoining magnificent dining room.

Sergio Mendes, Brazilian Bossa Nova Music Innovator, Dies at 83
Sergio Mendes, the innovative and influential pianist, composer and arranger who was one of Brazil’s earliest contemporary crossover artists, died Friday in Los Angeles, his family has confirmed. No cause of death was announced, although he recently suffered from long-term Covid. He was 83.

Mendes “passed away peacefully” in his hometown of Los Angeles, according to a statement from his family cited in the Guardian. “His wife and musical partner for the past 54 years, Gracinha Leporace Mendes, was by his side, as were his loving children. Mendes last performed in November 2023 to sold out and wildly enthusiastic houses in Paris, London and Barcelona,” they said. “For the last several months, his health had been challenged by the effects of long term Covid.”

I liked both Sergio and Herb in their day. When their music came on the radio, I turned it up. There was no YouTube back then. Searching for other artists required a cooperative record store with listening booths, and no policies limiting the number of records you could preview. They hated splitting the plastic wrapper on a new record especially when it was a niche like Bossa Nova.
