Baby elephant born for the first time in Fresno Chaffee Zoo history

KFSN
Saturday, August 17, 2024

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Fresno Chaffee Zoo is celebrating the birth of a baby elephant.

Action News has just learned that one of the zoo's African elephants had a male calf early Friday morning.

Keepers say both mom, named Nolwazi, and baby are doing great.

The pair will continue to be monitored by the Zoo's Animal and Vet teams.

An official announcement will be made later on when they'll be out on the savanna for the public to see.

The CEO says this is the first elephant calf born in the Zoo's 95-year history.

The Zoo's other female African elephant is expected to give birth in the coming weeks.

I've been in that zoo. Both my sons were born in Fresno. It's a very nice little zoo, with a kids' railroad that winds around the grounds. When Numbah Two Son was born, he had an elevated protein and they kept him in NICU for 10 days before they let us take him home. We were in the hotel on 9/11.

But Numbah One Son was 2+ years old, and needed to see the zoo. We went several times, and had great fun each time. If you get a chance to see Fresno, don't miss the Underground Gardens. My parents and I thought that place was utterly cool. 8-)

I have only been to a few views, the Clinch Park Zoo in Traverse City (gone now), the Brookfield Zoo outside of Chicago, and Kalamazoo.

Years ago, there was a zoo in Kalamazoo at Milham Park.
Milham Park Zoo
Image
1926 saw the beginnings of what would become a popular attraction at Milham Park…the small zoo and various other animals that roamed the property. The Joseph P. Westnedge Post, American Legion, voted to acquire two buffalo for the park. These were added to the small menagerie of peacocks, foxes, owls, swans, monkeys, raccoons, rabbits and black bears that were kept on the property. The city and the park commissioner worked diligently with the state to turn the park into a wildlife preserve, especially as a bird sanctuary. It was reported that Milham Park was ideal from the standpoint of topography, for bird culture and care. By 1927 it became necessary to construct a building large enough to house the animals and to provide heat during the winter. This animal building was expected to cost $6,000 and to be run year round.

Reptiles at the Zoo
A reptilium was added to the zoo in 1935, under the direction of 16-year-old Larry Tetzlaff, who later became widely known as “Jungle Larry,” a herpetologist, lecturer, game hunter and animal show owner. He exhibited his large collection of snakes and demonstrated the milking of venom from rattlesnakes. He and his snakes moved on to the New York World’s Fair in 1939, where he became the curator of reptiles.

The End of the Zoo
By the mid-1970s, however, the exhibits had dwindled to a few bears, raccoons and monkeys. Finally, only the bears were left, and they fell prey to sadistic vandals. Although most park patrons enjoyed watching the creatures, others abused the bears by throwing them lighted cigarettes when they begged for food or by throwing rocks at them. The bears often cut their paws on broken glass from bottles thrown into the pit. Peacocks were stoned to death. By 1977, only one aged lame bear was left, and he was put to sleep. Despite its sad end, the zoo provided enjoyment for park-goers for nearly half a century.
I don't know if we ever went to the zoo. Probably once. I have been to that park for many other things, from picnics to Kalamazoo Symphony concerts to golfing and just hiking around the park. There is still a bunch of wildlife. I saw lots of birds, including a very large one flying low overhead called a C-5 (it's hard to believe something that big could fly).

Last night ol' Wifehorn and I went to Medieval Times, for only the second time (our children were small back then). Anyway, the horses were magnificent, and we had a great time.

What a great job, riding horses and carrying lances and swords!

"What do you do for a living?"
"Oh, I'm a medieval knight, I do jousting and stuff on horseback."

The Green Knight was ready for battle - the lighting is a little funky, but look at that horse! .

The Red Knight was our favorite, he brought excellent horsemanship and a good sense of humor.
