‘Can’t be Black and Have a Firearm’: Purple Heart Veteran Arrested By NYPD for Possession of His Own Gun Despite Having Valid Concealed Weapon Permit Issued By the Same Police Department

By Carlos Miller |
Published on: July 2, 2024

In another apparent case of “Driving while Black,” a highly decorated Black U.S. Army veteran with a concealed weapons permit was pulled over for unspecified reasons by the NYPD and arrested for possession of his own gun, spending more than 24 hours in jail before he was informed of the charges against him.

Even though the concealed weapons permit had been issued to him by the New York City Police Department, which could have been quickly confirmed in its database, it still took prosecutors another three months before dismissing the charges against the 40-year-old veteran.

But even after the charges were dismissed, the NYPD still refused to return his firearm on the basis that the case was still under “investigation.”

Now Raffique Khan is suing the NYPD for racial profiling, malicious prosecution, false arrest and imprisonment, conspiracy and violating his Second Amendment right to bear arms, according to the lawsuit obtained by Atlanta Black Star.

Khan, in fact, is employed as an armed federal environment protection specialist for the Department of Interior assigned to Fort Wadsworth, a former military base on Staten Island that the National Park Service is now using.

Prior to accepting that job, he had applied for the NYPD and had even passed the entrance examination.

“I was supposed to be an NYPD officer. That’s how much faith I have in the system,” Khan said in a telephone interview with the Atlanta Black Star.

“The only thing I wanted to do is protect those who cannot protect themselves.”

Meanwhile, the main cop who arrested him, Matthew S. Bessen, has had 36 complaints filed against him over the past five years since joining the NYPD, mostly from Black people who have accused him of excessive force, improper use of body camera, failure to identify himself and discourtesy.

is "Shaun Harper" even a real person?
I am starting to wonder if the newspapers are using AI to generate Opinion pieces.

I wonder who is going to tell him that the article makes him look like an utterly confused pundit, not a professor.

Yup. DEI, the new n-word. Also, I heard "colored" sorority, especially putting it in context.

Alabama, in its racist wisdom, created a law last session outlawing DEI offices in public schools. University of Alabama closed their office this week. Not sure if Auburn (super conservative school) ever had one, but it'll be gone. The state's school board obviously has to get rid of their DEI stuff, too. Many (most?) public school systems in Alabama are majority minority, but we'll be sure they'll know that the War Between the States was fought over states' rights and slaves were actually treated well.

I have a relative who works in DEI office at Ole Miss. Surprised they haven't gotten rid of theirs.

Not to be the devil's advocate, but it's possibly a Freudian Slip. IE: He thought he said college, but actually said colored because that was on his mind. He has a direct memory of his desire and intent, but doesn't realize his real action.

So, we now have a benchmark. The masks were pulled down.

She was speaking to a "Black" sorority so it sounded to me very much like he said "colored." And I know he wants to claim he said "college" but I suspect "colored" was the word on his mind at the time. Just my .02.

It sounded more like co-ed to me just as a word, not taking the context into consideration. Whatever he said, it definitely wasn't college.

DEI hire is the new Affirmative Action (AA) hire, and it shows the racism and bigotry of those who use the phrase.

MAGA is using DEI to slam everyone who is not a white male. And that is according to LIsa Murkowski.

Black, brown, female, LGBT, disabled. It's all the slurs rolled into one.

And it's damn time the media stopped using it wasn't a slur. Cf. "Hey, Congressman X, MAGA scum Y says so and so Z was a DEI hire. Are they?

It's disgusting.

Time to flip it.

How many white men have been hired or promoted just because they are male? There's a bias in America toward white men. That just means that you'll end up with a less competent white man being hired instead of the more competent woman, person of color, etc. Time to point that out.

It is long past time for the white male privilege to end.

We can start with a non-white non-male President.
