Illinois deputy charged with murder after shooting a Black woman
Sonya Massey called 911 to report a prowler when Sean Grayson ‘aggressively yelled’ and fatally shot her in face

Erum Salam and agencies
Fri 19 Jul 2024 20.17 CEST

An Illinois sheriff’s deputy has been charged with murder after fatally shooting a Black woman who called 911 to report a possible prowler.

Sangamon county deputy Sean Grayson, who’s white, shot 36-year-old Sonya Massey in the face in her home in Springfield, Illinois – about 200 miles south of Chicago – after deputies responded to her 6 July call.

Prosecutors alleged that after Grayson, 30, allowed Massey to move a pot of water heating on the stove and set it on a counter. Grayson then “aggressively yelled” at Massey over the pot and pulled his 9mm pistol. Massey then put her hands in the air, declared “I’m sorry” and ducked for cover before being shot in the face.

Why did they even go in? The extended video shows they knocked on the door (a lot). She'd called them, thinking she'd heard a prowler. Once they checked and finally got her to open the door and told her they didn't find anything, why didn't they just...leave? Idk police procedures, but I don't understand why they ever went into her house.

And homeboy could have jumped out of the way if she'd tried to toss boiling water onto him. But she ducked down before he shot her.

Sonya Massey killing: family accuse police of attempted cover-up
Audio obtained by the Guardian reveals police dispatcher was told Black woman’s fatal wound was ‘self-inflicted’

Justin Glawe
Wed 24 Jul 2024 00.23 CEST

The family of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman who was shot in the face and killed by a white sheriff’s deputy in Illinois, have said police initially tried to cover up her killing.

Police audio obtained by the Guardian features someone on scene the night of Massey’s killing – presumably a deputy – saying Massey’s wound was “self-inflicted”. A dispatcher asks to confirm, and the person on scene repeats “self-inflicted”. The recording is in line with what the family says was misleading information given by police when Massey was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the family said police initially told Massey’s loved ones she had either killed herself or was killed by an intruder.

“They tried to make me believe that a neighbor had did it,” said Jimmie Crawford Jr, Massey’s former partner and the father of one of her children, who added that law enforcement told nurses at the hospital that Massey had “killed herself”. “How do you get that confused?” said Crawford Jr.

Cape Cod police officer facing more charges after alleged child porn discovery

By Cayle Thompson
July 26, 2024 at 7:18 am EDT

ORLEANS, Mass. — Brewster police officer Matthew Marshall walked out of the district courthouse in Orleans Thursday after posting $1,000 cash bail, less than 24 hours after he was charged with possession and distribution of child pornography. He did not answer questions from reporters.

At his arraignment, prosecutors detailed a litany of additional allegations against him – including charges of secretly recording a victim in distress, sharing sensitive information about suspects, and defacing public property.

Marshall is currently relieved of duty pending the outcome of the case against him. He has been ordered to surrender his weapon, have no contact with minors other than his teenage daughter, and consent to having his internet monitored.

The most serious charges relate to several instances of child pornography Marshall allegedly viewed and shared via his Snapchat account. According to court documents, Snapchat alerted the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, who in turn notified the Massachusetts State Police Cyber Crime Unit.

Investigators looking into the allegations say they uncovered evidence of further crimes, including a video reportedly showing Marshall urinating on the sinks, handles, and door of a Dunkin Donuts bathroom on Rte. 128 in Yarmouth.

“He described it as just something funny,” Cape & Islands Assistant District Attorney Courtney Scalice told the court as she explained the charges against Marshall.

Marshall denies the allegations of child pornography but reportedly admitted to investigators the incident at Dunkin Donuts.

Per reason.com story: "Oklahoma is not a "stop and identify" state, where police can demand the name of pedestrians, and even in those states, officers need a reasonable suspicion that the person is involved in a crime." 6-year-old son crying at the end is autistic, btw.

From the bodycam vid alone I am not sure what to think. Why was he not walking beside his 6yo kid holding his hand? Why were they walking on a back alley of a commercial area and not a residential street? What time at night was this? I haz these kind of questions.

The officer says "I've identified that you've been walking around down here at 5:30 in the morning". The reason.com article says "around 6 AM."

His son is autistic and they frequently don't like to be touched by anyone, even family.
Autistic children frequently don't do well in situations where there are distractions, like cars or other people or dogs.
It was 5:30 in the morning. Probably the coolest time of the day for a walk with your kid when temps are approaching 100 during the day. Even the cop commented on enjoying the weather.

The cops were 100% wrong from both a legal standpoint and a humanity standpoint. They asked the kid if that was his dad and he said yes. That should have been the end of the conversation. In a town with a population of only 2500, if there had been something like a burglary or vandalism or anything, they would have been aware of it and been able to verbalize their suspicion of a crime. They were also just stupid to not be able to see there was something wrong with the child. The red flashlight in his face and not seeming to pay a lot of attention to what was going on should have been their first clue. Even my 3 year old gd would have been coming to my defense, but the 6 year old just backed off and played with his light until they actually laid hands on his dad and threw him down. To make matters worse, when the cops did try to interact with the kid, neither even bothered to bend down to his level. Then the dipshit who had put him in the patrol car came back and tried to put his arms around the kid. The kid who had just seen the same cop grab his dad and throw him down. But the "quit crying" when the cop came back just put me over the edge. He obviously has never dealt with kids, much less an autistic one.

There are just about zero instances where that particular situation of taking a guy down in front of his kid like that is appropriate. They obviously were not thinking things through either, if they didn't tell the guy to call his wife and come get the kid, or even bring his ID to them (still illegal, but better than what happened) and had no apparent plan for what to do with the kid either. Just a clusterfuck with balloons all the way around for the cops and the whole bullshit from the Chief about "transparency" instead of firing their stupid asses instantly just compounds the stupid fuckery.

Charges dismissed in controversial Monongah traffic stop that went viral

By Mike Nolting
August 5, 2024 - 1:07 pm

MONONGAH, W.Va. — Marion County Prosecutor Jeffrey Freeman has dropped the charges against Beth Delloma, 45, after a traffic stop Thursday went viral due to the actions of Monongah Police Chief Nathan Lanham.

Delloma was stopped Thursday for an expired registration sticker by Lanham, who was not in a typical uniform or a marked cruiser. The interaction spiraled out of control when Delloma asked for identification and Lanham refused. Lanham pointed his service weapon at Delloma several times and wrestled her to the ground as she attempted to flee the scene for help.

“He filed a motion to dismiss the case,” Delloma’s attorney Joe Shaffer said of the prosecutor during a Monday appearance on MetroNews “Talkline.” “He asserts in the motion that the facts in the complaint do not support the felony charge of fleeing in a motor vehicle and reckless indifference to the safety of others.”

Shaffer said Lanham pulled her over initially wearing khaki pants with a firearm strapped to his thigh and a nylon t-shirt and requested her driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance. Because of the uniform, she cracked her window and asked Lanham for identification, and he identified himself Monongah police chief and became irate, Shaffer said.

Shaffer said Delloma wanted to escape what she thought was a police impersonator by telling him the documents were at her home and began to drive slowly to her home, which was about 30 yards away.

“We’re talking about a 49-year-old woman who is very intelligent and she’s aware of cases across the country where people have impersonated police officers and pulled over women,” Shaffer said. “The shirt he had on can be purchased on Amazon.”

She circled around near her home, which was across the street from her mother and sister’s homes. Lanham pulled his service weapon, ordered her out of the car and threatened to shoot her.

“She became extremely fearful,” Shaffer said. “He then would point the gun at her head area and then alternate pointing it down to her crotch or lap area, and he did that three or four times while he was screaming, ‘If you don’t get out of the car, I’ll shoot you.'”

Lanham then broke the driver’s side window and ordered her out of the car again. Shaffer said Delloma became afraid for her life at that point and fled through the passenger side door. Lanham ran around the car, and he threw Delloma to the ground and put her in handcuffs as she exited the vehicle.

“Then he circles around the back of the car and slams her to the ground, handcuffs her, and at some point, for some reason, he grabbed on her ear and pulled her ear; I don’t know why he did that.”

It sounds like another Kessler (that Gilberton police chief with a foul mouth) situation. It appears this one is was a part-time police chief of a one-person police department. He was also working part-time at other departments, but it is unsure which ones he is still with.

On a side note, Nick Saban graduated from Monongah High School. Rick Rodiguez (another college football coach) was from the same county and graduated from the school the opened to combine Monongah and others. Mary Lou Retton grew up in nearby Fairmont.

In this case, former officers:
Former Officers Allegedly Staged Raid To Extort $37,000,000

Four former law enforcement and military officers allegedly staged a fake raid on a California businessman’s home, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California announced Monday.

The former officers allegedly forcibly coerced a businessman to relinquish his multimillion-dollar business interests, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. This elaborate scheme was allegedly orchestrated in 2019 at the behest of the victim’s business partner, a wealthy Chinese national referred to only as “unindicted co-conspirator 1.”

The accused, identified as Steven Arthur Lankford, Glen Louis Cozart, Max Samuel Bennett Turbett and Matthew Phillip Hart, allegedly posed as law enforcement officers to execute the raid in Irvine, California. During the intrusion, they allegedly physically assaulted the businessman and forced him and his family into one room, seized their communication devices and restricted their movement for hours.

Under duress, the businessman was compelled to transfer his assets to the assailants, $36,972,386 in cash as well as lucrative shares in Jiangsu Sinorgchem. Lankford, a retired deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, along with Cozart, also a former deputy, were pivotal in the orchestration of the raid, the release stated. Turbett, a former member of the British military, and Hart, a former Australian military officer, flew in from Australia to participate.

The charged the defendants face include conspiracy to commit extortion, attempted extortion, conspiracy against rights and deprivation of rights under color of law, according to the news release. They could receive a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison for each of the extortion-related count and up to 10 years for each count of rights deprivation if convicted.

U.S. border agent accused of ordering women to show him their breasts
Shane Millan, 53, was arrested Thursday on charges that he deprived four women of their constitutional right to be free from unreasonable searches.

Border agent Shane Millan, 53, was arrested Thursday on charges that he deprived four women of their constitutional right to be free from unreasonable searches, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York said in a news release.

According to prosecutors, Millan told three women to expose their bare chests to him over a web camera while he was processing their applications to enter the country. A fourth woman was ordered to show him her breasts with her bra on, prosecutors said. The alleged incidents took place in August 2023.

Millan told the women that exposing their breasts was part of the process of being admitted into the United States, but it was actually for his own gratification, the prosecutors said.

Millan was arraigned Thursday before a federal magistrate judge in Syracuse and released pending trial.
