Simone Biles nails the Yurchenko double pike in podium training (in Paris). Video is 51 seconds long, but the action is in the first 12 seconds (you have to watch it on Youtube.) It's the best I've seen her do this vault.

The Opening Ceremonies are supposed to be on the Seine. I can't figure out how that'll work, so I'll def be watching. I mean, the parade of athletes makes sense, but how do you do the centralized entertainment/fireworks stuff?

I was curious about the location of the opening ceremonies in Paris, so I did a Google map search. Oh my... there are a lot of roads closed in Paris! I assume they have good mass transportation available.

NBC and Peacock Will Present First-Ever Commercial-Free Hour of the Olympics Opening Ceremony
For the first time ever, the Opening Ceremony for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 will include a commercial-free hour. Starting at 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday, NBC and Peacock will air the ceremony without ads.
Of course, nothing in this world is ever really for free. This ad-free hour is sponsored by six Team USA partners: The Coca-Cola Company, Delta, Lilly, Toyota Motor Corporation, Visa and Xfinity. Brand logos for each sponsor will appear onscreen throughout the hour and rotate in 10-minute increments.
Set on the River Seine, the Opening Ceremony will feature a four-mile-long flotilla of nearly 90 boats. Those boats will carry thousands of athletes from more than 200 countries who will all be competing for their respective countries. Thomas Jolly, the award-winning director and former artistic director of the theater company La Piccola Familia, serves as the artistic director of the Opening Ceremony.

Ad free! Yay! I barely watch any "tv" these days; I stream everything. The Olympics always seems to coincide with elections, so you end up with a ton of awful political ads. Since I never see them otherwise, they really super annoy me. We also have some really bad local ads for businesses. And then there's "CALL ME, ALABAMA!!" a personal injury lawyer. Ugh.
I'll still watch.

Had to look that one up. For those, like me, who didn't know... per Wiktionary - (idiomatic, UK, Australia, New Zealand) One's feet or legs, regarded as a means of transport.

I knew that when I still lived in the US. Odd that they consider it a AUNZUK thing.MN-Skeptic wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2024 9:23 pmHad to look that one up. Edit:
Wiki-D thinks it is of Scottish origin and the US equivalent is Shanks' Nag. Well my family was Scottish on both sides (sort of on Dad's side, and certainly on Mom's side) even if several generations removed. Mom's dad was Clan Chief of his drinking club in Michigan for a few years.

Looks like the Australia v USA show in the pool is taking shape. There's a few interlopers but somebody needs to tune up the air guitars.

Not only but also, Oz kicked their arch nemesis Espana in BasketSportsBall. They are in the pool of death and still have to face Greece and Canukia. Beating Spain first up is big.

So that poses the question "who the heck is/was Shanks"?qbawl wrote: ↑Fri Jul 26, 2024 7:25 amIrish descent here I always heard it as Shank's mare.keith wrote: ↑Fri Jul 26, 2024 12:48 amI knew that when I still lived in the US. So "shank" is another name for "shin".
Let's move on.
I'm having the usual struggle finding a good listing of what events are happening NOW, and on what channel they are being shown.
The olympics.com schedules are inaccurate (according to their On Now listing, there is no tennis going on), and glitch horribly, jumping up and down as ads open and change.
Peacock is probably my best bet, but I haven't cracked it yet.
Anybody have any recommendations?

I cheated. I set my YouTubeTV to record ALL Olympic events, while I ignore the whole thing, visiting my niece and her fambly in Seattle this weekend. I'll be able to scroll around and pick what I want to watch on my own schedule, and I'll be able to scroll through the ads, too also.
