Court rules Missouri AG entitled to certain Planned Parenthood transgender care records

A St. Louis judge has ordered Planned Parenthood to turn over certain documents to Attorney General Andrew Bailey in his ongoing investigation of transgender health care providers.

St. Louis Circuit Judge Michael Stelzer on Thursday ruled that the state’s Merchandising Practices Act entitled the Republican attorney general to documents he requested that weren’t protected by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the federal law known as HIPAA that protects patient privacy.

Bailey, in a news release, declared victory. He called it a “big day” and said “no stone will be left unturned.”

“There is no more important fight than to ensure Missouri is the safest state in the nation for children,” Bailey said.

Richard Muniz, interim president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri, said in a statement the decision was a “deep disappointment” but said “we are grateful the court understood the Attorney General could not violate the privacy of our patients.”

“By allowing the Attorney General to continue his sham investigation, the court has green-lit the ongoing assault on Missourians’ health care,” Muniz said.

I'm searching for a legitimate reason for any AG needing access to this information:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/missouri-att ... 30617.html

Bailey, a Republican, is investigating providers of gender-affirming care in the state, which has outlawed the provision of such care to minors and certain adults. His demand for information from Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri came in March 2023 as part of his investigation of whether Washington University’s Pediatric Transgender Center or other health care entities in Missouri “have engaged in or are engaging in any practices declared to be unlawful,” as he stated in a letter to Planned Parenthood.

Being cruel to members of a marginalized community is perfectly legitimate to those of a certain bent.

Speaking of bent, they should get bent.

Some lawyer needs to get a hold of that. HIPAA doesn't always cover what people think it does, but I don't understand this at all.

I think they tried to do this in Tennessee...they got records from Vanderbilt about gender affirming care?

Michelangelo and the most sublime declarations of gay love in art
Michelangelo announced his love for a young upper-class gentleman in verse and prose, but he also gave Tommaso de’ Cavalieri some of the greatest homoerotic drawings ever created – now taking centre stage at the British Museum

Jonathan Jones
Mon 29 Apr 2024 17.41 CEST

Tommaso de’ Cavalieri was the light of the age, unique in the world – at least in the eyes of the man who loved him. That ardent lover was Michelangelo, who described Cavalieri in these glowing words in a letter from 1532. If only a portrait of Tommaso survived we could have seen his face, which the fiftysomething artist claimed in a poem was so beautiful it gave him a glimpse of paradise itself.

Michelangelo did not just announce his love for this young upper-class citizen of Rome – who knew the pope and prominent cardinals socially – in verse and prose. He also gave Cavalieri some of the greatest drawings ever created. Up until this time, the mighty sculptor, painter and architect had used drawing as a tool to develop ideas: but the so-called “Presentation Drawings” he did for Tommaso aspire to be completed works of art. They star in the British Museum’s new exhibition of Michelangelo’s later graphic works, and demand a close look, for these are perhaps the most sublime declarations of gay love in art.

That may not be instantly obvious when you look at Michelangelo’s The Fall of Phaeton, from the BM’s own Michelangelo collection. It illustrates a Greek myth, retold by the Roman poet Ovid, of the overconfident youth Phaeton who has borrowed the flying chariot in which his father, the sun god, crosses the sky from dawn to dusk. He’s lost control of the horses so Jupiter, to stop his fiery chariot from burning the earth to a crisp, has struck him down. This is a sculptor’s drawing. You can feel the dead weight of the horses, their blunt mass, as they plummet. Phaeton’s naked upturned body dangles in freefall. On the ground, already in mourning for the doomed youth, his sisters are metamorphosing into poplar trees. There’s a male mourner, too: Cycnus who, as Ovid tells it, loved him and was devastated by his death. In his grief, he transformed into a swan. And it is as a swan that Michelangelo portrays this bereft lover.

Other drawings he gave Cavalieri are much more obviously homoerotic to our eyes untrained in classical mythology. In The Punishment of Tityus, an eagle pecks at a man’s naked form. It is a scene of torment, but it’s clear Michelangelo finds pleasure in this pain: the eagle rests on top of Tityus like a lover, and the nude man’s body is tilted to ensure a clear view of his genitals. Instead of a gory depiction of exposed entrails as other artists have pictured it, Michelangelo feasts his and Tommaso’s eyes on a softly shaded, lusciously sensual encounter.

Utah has a anti-transgender bathroom law. They opened up a web site to allow reports of bathroom "misuse" to be submitted.

It's going as well as can be expected:

https://www.losangelesblade.com/2024/05 ... bathrooms/

Reactions to the form’s release were immediate and predictable: multiple users started flooding in fake reports. One person submitted a report of “beavers” in their bathroom at 3 AM. Another posted a picture of a character from The Bee Movie, an allusion to other snitch forms against transgender people that were flooded with scripts for that movie. One person reported Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders as a trans person. Another reported an allegation of Representative Matthew Gaetz harassing girls outside of a locker room.

Disgusting. And isn't it illegal to take photographs in a public bathroom? Maybe that varies from state to state.

Target Pride merchandise only available at select stores after rightwing backlash
Company, which operates roughly 2,000 stores, declined to disclose number of stores where merchandise will not be available

Associated Press
Sat 11 May 2024 22.48 CEST

Target confirmed Friday that it won’t carry Pride Month merchandise at all stores in June after the discount retailer experienced a backlash and lower sales over its collection honoring LGBTQ+ communities.

Target, which operates roughly 2,000 stores, said decisions about where to stock Pride-themed products, including adult apparel, home goods, foods and beverages, would be based on “guest insights and consumer research”.

A Target spokesperson declined to disclose the number of stores where the merchandise will not be available, but the company said its online shop would offer a full assortment. The moves were first reported by Bloomberg.

“Target is committed to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community during Pride Month and year-round,” Target said in an emailed statement. “Most importantly, we want to create a welcoming and supportive environment for our LGBTQIA+ team members, which reflects our culture of care for the over 400,000 people who work at Target.”

Kelley Robinson, president of the LGBTQ+ advocacy group Human Rights Campaign, said Target’s decision was disappointing and risks alienating LGBTQ+ individuals and allies at the risk of not only profits, but also their values.

“Pride merchandise means something,” Robinson said in an emailed statement. “LGBTQ+ people are in every zip code in this country, and we aren’t going anywhere.”

‘He was a perfect, beautiful woman’: the female impersonator who became a 1920s star
Julian Eltinge conquered stage and screen a century ago, when gender play was normalized. But his biographer says Eltinge was ‘not an easy ally’

Alaina Demopoulos
Tue 18 Jun 2024 16.55 CEST

Over a hundred years ago, a cis man rose to superstardom as a female impersonator. His proto-drag persona was so popular – and accepted into the mainstream – that he ran his own ladies’ magazine, sold cold cream to female fans, and counted royals and celebrities as superfans.

In the new book Beautiful: The Story of Julian Eltinge, America’s Greatest Female Impersonator, the writer Andrew L Erdman documents the life of a turn-of-the-century performer whose career would still be considered radical more than 80 years after his death. The title refers to a common description of Eltinge, who was known for his elaborate costumes, tight corseting and highly illusionary makeup skills. “He was this perfect, beautiful woman,” Erdman said in an interview. “[Female impersonation] got very normalized in the 1920s … there was a lot of gender play and openness across the spectrum.”

I kissed a woman on Brookside 30 years ago – it changed Britain for good
The now famous Channel 4 lesbian kiss became a symbol of LGBTQ+ progress that resonates to this day

Nicola Stephenson
Tue 25 Jun 2024 09.00 CEST

As my Brookside co-star Anna Friel and I prepared to film our on-screen kiss 30 years ago, I could never have anticipated the cultural significance this simple act would have.

It was 1994, when section 28 was in full force, prohibiting the “promotion” of homosexuality in schools, when Channel 4 aired the now famous lesbian kiss between my character, Margaret Clemence, and Friel’s, Beth Jordache, on the popular soap opera; the first time a kiss between two women had aired pre-watershed. It would for ever change the British media landscape and society’s perception of LGBTQ+ relationships.

At the time of filming, LGBTQ+ representation on television was minimal and often portrayed negatively. But in my world, as a 22-year-old actor, surrounded by gay people at work and often dancing in Manchester’s gay clubs at the weekends, I lived in a totally free and accepting bubble.

Biden pardons thousands of US veterans convicted under law banning gay sex
President corrects ‘great injustice’ with clemency for military personnel ‘convicted simply for being themselves’

David Smith in Washington
Wed 26 Jun 2024 11.00 CEST

Joe Biden has moved to correct a “great injustice” by pardoning thousands of US veterans convicted over six decades under a military law that banned gay sex.

The presidential proclamation, which comes during Pride month and an election year, allows LGBTQ+ service members convicted of crimes based solely on their sexual orientation to apply for a certificate of pardon that will help them receive withheld benefits.

“Today, I am righting an historic wrong by using my clemency authority to pardon many former service members who were convicted simply for being themselves,” Biden said in a statement.

“Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQ+ service members were forced out of the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Some of these patriotic Americans were subject to court-martial, and have carried the burden of this great injustice for decades.”

The president said the step was about “dignity” and “decency”, and ensuring the military’s culture reflects that of America.

It grants clemency to service members convicted under Uniform Code of Military Justice article 125 – which criminalised sodomy, including between consenting adults – between 1951 and 2013, when it was rewritten by Congress.

That includes victims of the 1950s “lavender scare”, a witch-hunt in which many LGBTQ+ people employed by the federal government were viewed as security risks amid fears their sexual orientation made them vulnerable to blackmail. Thousands were investigated and fired or denied employment.

On a call with reporters previewing the announcement, a senior administration official said: “If you think about the historical periods where LGBTQ+ individuals were purged from the federal government more generally, in the parallel military realm that was also occurring during the lavender scare, and so the convictions from those eras are indeed covered by this proclamation.”

Biden issued a separate proclamation last year marking the 70th anniversary of the lavender scare. It described a “shameful chapter” in the nation’s history in which 5,000 to 10,000 LGBTQ+ federal employees were investigated and interrogated, and lost their jobs “simply because of who they were and whom they loved”.

The measure also represents a rebuke of “don’t ask, don’t tell”, a Bill Clinton-era policy that allowed LGBTQ+ individuals to serve in the military as long as they did not reveal their sexual orientation. The policy, which stated that military personnel would not be asked about their sexual orientation, was repealed in 2010.

Georgia lawsuit challenges anti-LGBTQ+ book bans over ‘real harms’
Lawsuit says student and youth groups hurt after teacher was fired for reading My Shadow is Purple to students

Timothy Pratt
Wed 3 Jul 2024 13.00 CEST

The Southern Poverty Law Center and another group have amended a federal lawsuit against a Georgia school district to include a transgender student and a grassroots youth organization, effectively becoming the “first case challenging anti-LGBTQ book bans” in the state.

The move – done anonymously to protect the student – widens the case’s focus from how teachers are affected by censorship laws and policies in Georgia, to how those same policies affect children.

Harry Chiu, with the Southern Education Foundation and one of the plaintiffs’ attorneys, told the Guardian he believes the case could “set a precedent in Georgia and across the region that book bans which discriminate against LGBTQ students and educators who teach age-appropriate lessons are unconstitutional”.

Katherine Rinderle, an elementary school teacher of “gifted and talented” students, was fired in August after reading My Shadow is Purple to her students. The complaint was previously lodged on her behalf, as well as the Georgia Association of Educators and another teacher – and against the school district and individual employees. Defendants filed a motion in April to dismiss the initial complaint. Now, the amended lawsuit adds the student – called “AA” – and the Georgia Youth Justice Coalition, a grassroots youth group, as plaintiffs. The school district and other defendants have until 29 July to respond.

Western Pennsylvania man accused of killing, dismembering transgender teen

Image

https://abc7chicago.com/post/pauly-like ... /15045631/
CLARK BOROUGH, Pennsylvania -- A Western Pennsylvania man is accused of murdering and dismembering a transgender teenager.

DaShawn Watkins, 29, is facing murder charges in connection with the death of 14-year-old Pauly Likens.

On June 25, the Sharon Police Department received a report that Likens had been missing since June 22, a news release from the Mercer County Coroner states.

That same day, the Hermitage Police Department was dispatched to a nearby lake, where they found dismembered human remains recovered in and around the water, officials stated. Likens' remains were recovered in the area surrounding Shenango River Lake over the following week, according to state police.

An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was ruled to be a sharp force trauma to the head, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
