I like Mississippi hydroplane races more better. It's a spectator sport.

I am fully recovered from the virus I supposedly had, but the day before our 6 am flight I was very ill. Ol' Wifehorn said, "I'll cancel the flight but you have to go to the doctor." She was unamused. Sympathetic, but unamused, and for good reason - she wants to see our family in Seattle, and so do I. So I went to the gastroenterologist today and told her the story, and she said, "You had a virus, but it's gone now." I had a good long conversation with her, and then she sent me on my way.

Anyway, we have rescheduled and we're set for July.

Speaking of my trip to Seattle, I know y'all remember that three years ago, at the Seattle Zoo, I successfully got my 3 year old great-nephew Hunter to run over to his mother and solemnly inform her that the hippopotami were out of gas and we had to take them to the gas station.

We were in a sedan, and I'm still not sure whose lap the hippos were planning on sitting in.

He's 6 this summer, and may be somewhat more difficult to fool. But I'll try. And now he has a sister only two years old. The possibilities are endless.

Yeah, and since I have 4³ I can form a cube.

I also have 6³ spheres which are only .5 cm.

I had a big neodymium, 40 mm x 40 mm x 20 mm, but I let it get too close to another big magnet I have, and when they collided the damn thing chipped. It was too powerful for me anyway - I only hurt my finger once, but it stung. And I couldn't repair the chip, so I dumped it. That magnet was so strong it was dangerous.

That's two hundred sixteen individual magnets, half a centimeter each, configured as a cube. 'Course, if I laid them out in a row, it would be 1 meter 8 centimeters in length. It takes practice to form them into a cube. This time I got it on the third try.

I have a new toy, a Bostitch framing nailer, I'm doing a project on the side porch and it was put together with a nailer. I wish I had a big brother to show me how to use new tools, but I reckon it might be prudent to read the manual. Besides, jez is a tech writer, she probably wrote the manual.

I don't have any nails for it. I leave Thursday morning at 5 am for Seattle. The nails will be delivered Friday. I will be home by Tuesday next week. New gun, can't shoot anything.

My Seattle sister is a retired commercial carpenter and has spent weeks visiting and organizing all of my sweetie's tools and hardware. Organization is her secret power. As a retired carpenter, she could teach you everything you need to know to use a nailer safely.

And she's in Seattle, where you'll be visiting!

We have a nail gun (not sure if there's one specialized for roofs) which is handy for a lot of things. One handy thing is that it involves compressed air, so we always have that at the house to put air in car tires when they get low.

But when constructing things, the nail gun is SO much better than a hammer and nails. Just wear eye protection (duh).

Just promise me you won'y defeat the safeties on the gun.

Some folks do, so every time the gun is pressed against anything, a nail is fired. Like this fellow did:

Fell off a roof and the gun bounced around on the way down. Astonishingly, the guy made a near-full recovery.

Yeah, carpenters seem to like the bump-fire mode.
When I was doing some remodeling back at the old house, I had a very nice framing nailer that had that. Never used it, didn't like it.
I also didn't end up in the hospital.
And yeah, a nailer beats a hammer every day of the week.

never did roofing with a nailer, though, because after one extremely hot summer weekend in the 80s doing a roof I promised myself I would NEVER AGAIN do roofing.

Oh man, if only I had time to look her up and get some tips! But this is a whirlwind trip, and we aren't even renting a car, so we're pretty much tied to Bainbridge Island for the duration.

Not ignoring other posts on the subject, and I have made a small amount of progress (ol' Wifehorn is bringing endless political updates

), but Bostitch calls bump-fire mode "Contact trip" and the regular mode is "Sequential trip", and you have to change the trigger if you want to change it to Contact trip. And the triggers are different colors, so you know what setting you have.

I will almost certainly never use Contact trip, that's what the guy in RoadScholar's post did. I'm fine with Sequential trip, which is the factory setting.

But I'm still reading (and I'm still reading Book 5 in the Dumb Luck and Dead Heroes series by Skyler Ramirez), so there's no rush.
