Teen with airsoft gun killed in Renton by off-duty guard, police say

June 7, 2024 at 6:30 pm
By Alexandra Yoon-Hendricks Seattle Times staff reporter

An off-duty, armed security guard shot and killed 17-year-old Hazrat Ali Rohani who was trying to exchange an airsoft gun to a Renton sporting goods store on Wednesday evening, according to police and the King County Medical Examiner.

The 51-year-old man shot the boy who, with two other teens, was walking toward a Big 5 Sporting Goods store in a strip mall on Grady Way, according to court documents released Friday.

He was booked into King County Jail on investigation of second-degree murder. A charging decision from prosecutors is expected June 10.

The man told Renton Police Department officers he believed the boys were going to rob the store.

The Seattle Times generally does not name suspects until they have been charged.

The two surviving teenagers told police they were going to the store to exchange or return a malfunctioning airsoft gun, as well as to get help with another airsoft gun they had.

The security guard was not even employed at the mall
Off-duty security guard charged with murder after shooting Renton teen in the back 6 times

KOMO News
11 Jun 2024

The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office officially charged an off-duty security guard with both second-degree murder and second-degree assault for the deadly shooting of a Renton teenager.

As part of the charging decision, prosecutors said 51-year-old Aaron Brown Myers shot 17-year-old Hazrat Ali Rohani a total of seven times, including six times in the back. Prosecutors argued that Rohani could not have posed a threat to Myers since the teen was allegedly facing away from Myers at the time of the incident.

The homicide occurred June 5 outside the Big 5 Sporting Goods store on Grady Way in Renton.

In court filings, police noted Myers was an off-duty, armed security guard. Despite having no authority to conduct security services at that specific location, police said he told them he offered "overwatch" at the strip mall because of rising crime in the parking lot there.

Obviously the shooter was in fear for his life from this Muslim teenager running away from him... 6 more shots should end the threat.

Bodycam: Grandma Shoots Intruder While Handcuffed to Chair During Home Robbery

Law&Crime BodyCam
13 Jun 2024

Bodycam footage shows the aftermath of a shocking Idaho home invasion that didn’t end well for the suspect on March 13. Bingham County authorities received a 911 call from an 85-year-old woman claiming she was handcuffed to a chair after her home was broken into and she subdued the invader. Christine Jenneiahn was able to retrieve a firearm she kept under a pillow while she was tied to a chair and shoot the man trying to rob her. Get all the details on this episode of Law&Crime BodyCam.

Jenneiahn told police she woke up at 2 a.m. to a masked stranger in a military jacket pointing a gun at her while she lay in bed. She said he took her into the living room, tied her up, and pistol-whipped her before asking where she kept her valuables. While Derek Condon searched the home for items to steal, Jenneiahn dragged the chair she was handcuffed to back to her bedroom and retrieved her pistol. She then made her way back to the living room and hid the firearm. When Condon returned, he began threatening her. She lunged to grab the stashed weapon and opened fire on Condon, who collapsed after returning fire. Jenneiahn survived the shocking incident, while Condon died at the scene.

Nine injured including two children in shooting at public splash pad in Michigan
Police say eight-year-old shot in the head is in critical condition; suspect later died by suicide at home

Guardian staff and agencies
Sun 16 Jun 2024 07.33 CEST

Nine people, including two children, have been shot and wounded at a city-run water park near Detroit in what appeared to be a random attack, police have said.

Two children were among the victims, including an 8-year-old who was shot in the head and is in critical condition, after a shooter opened fire at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad park, where families had gathered to escape the summer heat.

A man got out of a vehicle in front of the park, in Rochester Hills, Michigan, at about 5 pm local time and fired from a 9mm semiautomatic Glock, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. Law enforcement tracked the suspect to a home, where he died by suicide, authorities said.

Bouchard said the shooting appeared to be random, with the shooter driving up to the park, walking to the splash pad and firing as many as 28 times, stopping multiple times to reload.

7 injured, including 4 children, at Nebraska home after neighbor opens fire
The alleged shooter Billy Booth, 74, was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a home across the street. The Hispanic victims had previously reported Booth for making statements including "Go home" and "Speak English" prior to the shooting, police said.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/7-injured- ... rcna159617
Seven people, including four children, were shot by a neighbor at a Nebraska home Friday evening, according to authorities, who said the crime could potentially be racially motivated.

At about 4:33 p.m., multiple 911 calls were made to report an active shooter situation on the 1200 block of Crestline Drive in Crete, a town in southeastern Nebraska, Nebraska State Patrol Col. John Bolduc said at a news briefing Saturday. Local officers and deputies responded to the scene, where they could still hear gunshots, including a single gunshot that came from a home across the street.

About 15 people were at the home at the time of the shooting, most of whom were outside in the yard, according to a news release. At least one of the victims was inside the home. It's not clear at this time who was a resident and who was visiting.

"It was quickly determined that all gunfire had come from a single residence at 1810 Parkland Street," Bolduc said, adding that a SWAT team responded to the home to apprehend what was believed to be "a barricaded subject."

The SWAT team entered the home at about 6:40 p.m., where it found the 74-year-old suspect, Billy Booth, dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A shotgun was found near Booth's body, Bolduc said.

"Preliminary investigation shows that all rounds fired by Booth came from inside of his house," Bolduc said. "Investigators are still actively working this investigation to understand everything that occurred, but at this point, we don't believe there was any verbal contact between the suspect and any of the victims in the moments that led up to the shooting."

Three of the victims found on the scene were adults, ranging in age from 22 to 43. Four were children, ranging in age from 3 to 10, Bolduc said. All of the victims are believed to be Hispanic, according to Crete Police Chief Gary Young Jr.

Six victims were taken to the hospital initially and a seventh realized he was injured later that evening, according to the state patrol. Four have been released from the hospital and three are still receiving care — two of whom are in a children’s hospital. All are expected to survive.

There was a history between the suspect and the victims' families, according to Bolduc. The Crete Police responded to "several complaints" since 2021, most of which came from Booth regarding "driving behavior" in the neighborhood, according to Young, who also spoke at the news briefing.

"Not necessarily associated with the victims' house, but cars driving too fast in the neighborhood, improper parking, nuisance properties, quality-of-life type issues," Young said. "There was a single report from the victims that the suspect had flipped them off, told them to 'Go home' or 'back to where they came from,' to 'Speak English.'"

Toddler dies after shooting himself in Brunswick Hills

A 3-year-old died after shooting himself on Wednesday evening in Brunswick Hills.

Brunswick Hills Police Chief Tim Sopkovich said the shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. on Marks Road in the township.

The toddler obtained his father’s gun and discharged it, Sopkovich said. The bullet struck him in the chest.

The child was transported by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland and later died as a result of his injuries, Sopkovich said. The shooting appears to be accidental.

There have been no charges or arrests, and the case is still under investigation, he said. An autopsy will be performed, and information from the investigation will later be sent to the Medina County Prosecutor.

The child’s name has not been released because the entire family has not been notified of the incident yet, Sopkovich said.

The Brunswick Division of Fire, Brunswick Hills Fire Department and Metro LifeFlight were the other agencies involved, he said.

Sopkovich encouraged gun owners to practice firearm safety by securing their weapons, keeping them out of reach of children, unloading them and getting a safe to put the firearms in.

“This was a tragic event,” he said. “Our community suffered a big loss, and it is sad.”

Yes, let’s all haz a big sad. Couldn’t have been stopped, couldn’t have been avoided.
Charges filed
Dad charged in accidental shooting death of Brunswick Hills toddler

The father of a 3-year-old boy who died in an accidental shooting has been charged with child endangering.

Matthew Lamatrice, 28, of Brunswick Hills is scheduled to make his first appearance in Medina County Common Pleas Court on July 11 after a grand jury indicted him last month.

Lamatrice is charged in the death of his son, Maxwell, who was wounded after handling a gun in the family’s garage April 10, authorities said. Child endangering is a third-degree felony in Ohio, punishable by as much as three years in prison.

Medina County Prosecutor S. Forrest Thompson said he realizes the deep pain that the child’s family is suffering.

“People need to know that children and guns don’t mix,” Thompson said. “When you’re a gun owner, you have an added level of responsibility to secure a weapon. These are not box cutters, where you can cut your hand if you pick them up wrong. (Guns) are lethal.”
