I thought it always happened on the 21st... till today.
Re: Leap YearsThe summer solstice takes place on Saturday at 5:43 p.m. EDT, making it the earliest official arrival of the summer season in 124 years. On Saturday afternoon, the sun’s rays will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer, the furthest north they’ll go all year.
This year’s summer solstice — again, that’s the northernmost point of the sun’s direct sunlight — will be the earliest since 1896. That’s thanks to this year’s leap year.
For that reason, summer solstices will, on average, get earlier and earlier until 2100, which will be a skipped leap year. The earliest summer solstice this century will take place on the final leap year before the skipped 2100 one: on June 20, 2096, the summer solstice will take place at 2:32 a.m. EDT.

Well, it happened again. Today is the longest day of the year. In my particular case, that means getting ready for major surgery mañana, the grand opening of my left shoulder. I'm stoked, and I can't wait. But it requires preparation, and that's today.

George Gershwin's Summertime is one of my very favorite songs, and, when the hot weather arrives, I just have to play Billy Stewart's version of Summertime. Loudly! (My husband also got a kick out of this version.)

I hope all goes well tomorrow, Foggy!
I’m hoping to go to Port Dalhousie to drum down the sun on the beach tonight. I’m usually working during the solstice, but I’m on vacation this week.
If there are any Rush fans, it’s at Lakeside Park.

Happy Summer Solstice. For those of you who live south of the Equator, Happy Winter Solstice.
I hate the shortening of the days, but it won't be too noticeable for a month or so.
Personally, I've come to like the meteorological seasons. Summer started June 1 in that one. They feel better.

The solstice happens whether anyone notices it or not. Indeed it happened before there was anyone to notice it

43 years ago today, I made an offhand comment at our wedding “This sure has been a long day “. My nephew, about 12 years old at the time said “Well sure, it’s the first day of summer!”
I had to laugh. He was always a smart kid, he ended up getting a PhD in chemistry.

We're getting lots of light (photon molecules), and I shall swim at 11. All these 90° days with no rain is bringing my pool up to bathtub temperatures. An overnight rain will bring it down 5° or more. But we're having a little bit of drought, it seems.

Er...photons are particles not molecules. They are also waves but still not molecules.
