We had our first Hafla (dance party/recital) since before Covid last night. I performed a Saidi cane dance, a Bollywood dance, and a Polynesian dance. The video of the actual performance of the cane dance didn’t work so we had to film it again after the show.

Not just you.

I also don't think its just me that LOVES that song. Gotje and Kimbra struck lightening.

That song was on heavy rotation here on the radio. I am not a fan. I turned it down when it came on. That said, the dance was fascinating, snappy, and entertaining. Really well done.

That was an impressive use of strength.

I've never heard of Butoh before. When I first saw a Japanese man doing this, my first thought was to wonder if it was inspired by the horrors of being nuked. It was the same kind of thing as this man does, but many of the movements the Japanese artist seemed like the kind of thing you might have witnessed in people who were within the range of nuclear fallout. I did a quick search and here is a line from the explanation of Butoh. I was not surprised to find the words "post war shock" in that explanation.
The inspiration for this new style was in part a reaction to post-war shock as well as the influx of western influence on Japanese dance, but also a desire to create something which differed from the strict, classical forms of Kabuki and Nōh theater.
