TOOELE, Utah -- A 9-year-old child has been arrested in northern Utah for fatally shooting a family member in the head, police said Tuesday.

Officers from the Tooele City Police Department, located 35 miles (56 kilometers) southwest of Salt Lake City, were dispatched to the family's home Friday night after receiving reports that a man was unconscious and bleeding from his head.

They quickly determined that the 32-year-old had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was in critical condition, Cpl. Colbey Bentley said. First responders transported the man to a hospital near Salt Lake City, where he died from his injuries.

An ongoing investigation has led to the arrest of the victim's 9-year-old family member. Police have not disclosed what type of familial connection the two shared. The child has not yet been charged and police have not identified either individual by name.

Robert Card, the Army reservist who carried out a deadly mass shooting in Maine last year before taking his own life, showed signs of traumatic brain injury seen in people who have been exposed to weapons blasts, according to a research center that analyzed Card’s brain after his death.

The findings — made public by the Card family Wednesday in a statement released by the Concussion Legacy Foundation — suggest that “brain injury likely played a role” in the behavioral changes noted by those who knew Card in the months leading up to his attack, according to Ann McKee, the lead researcher and director at the Boston University CTE Center.

Card, 40, opened fire at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston in October, killing 18 people. In the months leading up to the attack, friends, family and colleagues said he grew erratic and paranoid — to the point where relatives shared concerns about his mental health with the police.

The Boston University CTE Center said it carried out the post-mortem study of Card’s brain at the request of Maine’s chief medical examiner’s office.

The examination showed “significant degeneration, axonal and myelin loss, inflammation, and small blood vessel injury” in the brain, McKee said in a statement. But there were no signs that Card suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative disease thought to be caused by repeated head trauma that affects how the brain works, she said.

The damage was consistent with “previous studies on the effects of blast injury in humans and experimental models,” she said.

Card was in the Army Reserve for more than half of his life, but never served in combat deployments, The Washington Post previously reported. According to the statement released Wednesday, Card was a longtime instructor at an Army hand grenade training range, where “it is believed he was exposed to thousands of low-level blasts.”

Two dead, 4 injured in Arkansas mass shooting

https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/10/us/arkan ... index.html
Two people were killed and four others were wounded in a shooting in Jonesboro, Arkansas, according to law enforcement officials. The alleged shooter is dead, police say.

Just before 5 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to a neighborhood where they found multiple victims with gunshot wounds, the Jonesboro Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The shooting took place during a private party at an abandoned building in the city northeast of Little Rock, police spokesperson Sally Smith told CNN.

The suspect knew the male and female victims who were killed, as well as another female victim who was wounded, police said in an updated Facebook post. The two female victims were sisters, Smith said, describing the incident as a domestic shooting.

Three other people were wounded, police said.

"It's a tragic incident": Gun under pillow leads to boy's accidental self-inflicted gunshot

GLENDALE, Ariz. - A 4-year-old boy was hurt after he accidentally shot himself Wednesday morning with a handgun, authorities said.

Glendale police found the boy suffering from what they called a "self-inflicted" gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
:snippity:
"Through the investigation, it was learned that the child was in bed and there was a firearm in the bed. He reached over underneath a pillow and then an accidental discharge is what occurred and struck the child," explained Mendez. "After that, the adult that was with him in the bed contacted the other adult, they began calling police, and then that's when we responded and began investigating this case."

Third man charged with murder in Kansas City Chiefs rally shooting

By: CNN
Posted: Mar 21, 2024 9:28 PM CDT

A third man has been charged with murder in connection to the mass shooting after a Kansas City Chiefs championship rally last month that left one woman dead and more than two dozen people injured, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Terry J. Young, 20, is charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker’s office said in a news release.

CNN has not been able to identify an attorney for Young. He is being held on a $1 million cash bond, according to court records.

The woman killed and the rest of the people wounded were caught in gunfire after Young and two other people allegedly “fired weapons in response to a verbal argument,” the prosecutor’s office said.

Young and two people walked up to a person in another group, and a verbal argument between them followed, according to prosecutors.

“After one individual pulled out a firearm, Young pulled out a firearm and pointed it at and advanced toward the first individual,” the prosecutors said in a news release. “A review of surveillance video showed Young appearing to shoot several times.”

Investigators combed through Young’s social media and allegedly saw him wearing the “same distinctive backpack” seen in surveillance video from Union Station, where the shooting unfolded.

“The cell phone data also showed the device was in the area of the shooting when it occurred,” the prosecutor’s office said.

‘A talented, goofy kid’: family of Ryan Gainer, autistic teen killed by police, speak out
Shooting of 15-year-old ‘beautiful soul’ in California revives scrutiny on law enforcement abuse of youth with disabilities

Sam Levin in Apple Valley, California
Fri 22 Mar 2024 00.26 CET

When Ryan Gainer was diagnosed with autism as a toddler, he was nonverbal, and his family all learned sign language to communicate with him. But after the southern California boy learned how to speak at around age four, he was a “ball of energy” who never stopped talking, his older sister Rachel said.

He loved saying “hi” to neighbors and strangers alike, and as a young teen was known as the student who greeted everyone with a “good morning” and a smile.

Ryan’s family spoke of his early years and bright presence two weeks after his life was cut short at age 15, when sheriff deputies were called to his home and fatally shot him during a mental health episode. The tragedy has sparked outrage and escalated concerns about how US law enforcement uses force against people with disabilities.

“He was a funny, talented, goofy kid – just a beautiful soul. He saw the good in everyone,” Rachel, 34, said at her home in Apple Valley, a remote desert town two hours east of Los Angeles. “We want accountability.”

Ryan was killed on 9 March when officers responded to a 911 call from one of his family members, who reported he was breaking things in their house and “hitting” his sister, but that she wasn’t injured. Body-camera footage showed that two San Bernardino sheriff deputies shot Ryan within roughly five seconds of seeing him. The videos captured someone inside the home saying Ryan had a “stick”, then Ryan appearing in the doorway. He moved toward a deputy, who immediately threatened to shoot – and fired as he ran from Ryan.

The department said Ryan was holding a 5ft-long gardening tool with a “sharp” end and labeled the encounter an “attempted murder of peace officer” in a press release. Ryan appeared to be holding the tool over his head, but the footage didn’t clearly capture the moment of the shooting nor did it show him attacking or attempting to assault the officer.

At a press conference outside the family home on Thursday, standing near the spot in the front yard where Ryan was shot, the family’s attorneys announced they were filing a claim against San Bernardino county, the first step in a lawsuit. One lawyer held up a hula hoe similar to the one Ryan had held – a wooden stick with a metal end used for weeding. He encouraged reporters to touch it – noting the end was not, in fact, sharp as the department had alleged.

7 kids, some as young as 12, wounded in mass shooting at busy Indianapolis mall

https://nypost.com/2024/03/31/us-news/i ... 7-wounded/
At least seven children between the ages of 12 and 17 were wounded in a mass shooting in busy downtown Indianapolis late Saturday night.

Officers were on patrol just after 11 p.m. when they heard gunshots near the Circle Centre Mall, a shopping plaza downtown, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department told Fox 59.

After rushing to the area of West Maryland Street, officers located a “large group of juveniles,” including six with gunshot wounds, Police Deputy Chief Tanya Terry said during a Sunday morning news conference, according to CNN.

All of the victims were taken to local hospitals, with a seventh arriving later, Terry said.

:snippity:

According to a police report, there were four boys and three girls injured in the shooting.

The mall is in the heart of the Hoosier capital’s downtown nightlife district, with multiple busy bars and restaurants nearby.

It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.

No suspects were in custody as of Sunday morning.

Northern Kentucky parents face more serious charge in shooting death of their toddler

KENTON COUNTY, Ky. (WKRC) - Parents who were arrested after a toddler was shot and killed by his three-year-old brother now face a new and more serious charge.

Selena Farrell and Tashaun Adams are charged with complicity to murder as of their indictment on March 28.

They were originally charged with manslaughter and abandonment of a minor.

They were arrested in January after two-year-old Khalil Adams was shot in an apartment building near Warren Street in Covington.

Investigators say a loaded gun was left within reach of the other child who shot Khalil while the parents were sleeping.

Farrell is also charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. She's held on $50,000 bond.

Adams is locked up on $25,000 bond.

1 dead, 4 wounded in shooting at Nashville restaurant during packed Easter brunch service

https://nypost.com/2024/03/31/us-news/1 ... h-service/
One person was killed and four others were wounded when a gunman opened fire inside a Nashville restaurant during Easter Sunday brunch service, authorities said.

Gunfire rang out inside Roasted, a popular brunch spot at 614 Garlfied St. in the Salemtown section of the city, just before 3 p.m., Metro Nashville police said.

One man was shot and killed and several others were hurt but are expected to survive, police said.

Roasted — which describes itself as “a safe haven where community thrives, love is in the air, and good times are shared” — was packed with customers, including some children, who were dining out for the Christian holiday before the gunfire erupted, according to social media posts.

The restaurant was full of people dancing to a DJ, sipping mimosas and taking photos with a staffer dressed as the Easter bunny, Roasted’s Instagram stories show.

But the joyous event turned deadly when a man decided to pull out a gun in the middle of the restaurant, according to a photo of the suspect released by Metro Nashville police.

3-year-old dies after shooting self in eye inside Philadelphia home: Police

A 3-year-old girl who shot herself inside a home in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood on Saturday afternoon has died, according to police.

The child has been identified as Kayden Barnes.

Officers say the shooting happened at a home on the 500 block of East Chelten Avenue at about 1:15 p.m.

Police said the 3-year-old found her father's unsecured gun and shot herself in the eye. The father was cleaning the gun and left it out, police said, who added both of the child's parents were home at the time of the shooting.

She was transported in a private vehicle to Einstein Medical Center and was later airlifted to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. She died at about 2:30 a.m. Monday.

A weapon was recovered and a male was taken into custody for questioning. He was later released.

Charges are not expected at this time, police said.

Police did not say where the child found the gun inside the home.

I definitely recommend cleaning a loaded handgun. It’s easier if the safety is off.

Yeah, that’s nonsense. The “cleaning” part sounds like a made-up story to me.
