The sit-down will mark the first time a member of the Western media will interview Putin since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine that sparked the ongoing war between the two countries.

“We are not encouraging you to agree with what Putin may say in this interview,” Carlson said in a video posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “But we are urging you to watch it. You should know as much as you can. And then, like a free citizen and not a slave, you can decide for yourself.”

Carlson did not specify when his interview with Putin would publish, but during his four-minute announcement, he blasted the American media and U.S. government for what he described as blind support for Ukraine in its war effort.

Carlson has for years been critical of U.S. involvement in the conflict, the Ukrainian government and its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, with whom he said he has also requested an interview.

Speaking from what appeared to be an elevated balcony in Moscow, Carlson acknowledged what he called “risks to conducting an interview like this” and noted he and his crew paid for the trip to Moscow themselves and did not take any financial assistance from government groups to travel.

He did not ask a single question about Russia’s attacks on civilian areas or critical infrastructure in Ukraine, which have killed thousands. There was no mention of the war crime allegations facing the Russian leader or the forced deportation of Ukrainian children. Absent too were questions on Russia’s sweeping political crackdowns on Putin’s critics or the long jail sentences meted out to ordinary Russians staging antiwar protests.

Instead, Carlson posed increasingly esoteric questions — including whether any world leader could be a true Christian — and at times appeared to goad Putin into alleging a U.S. deep state and promote other conspiracy theories.

Interjections by the former Fox News anchor during his interview released on Thursday were also cut, it was reported, and a version viewed online omitted a controversial segment in which the Russian president spoke about Adolf Hitler.

The fallout from the interview continues as the American anchor faced criticism that he did little to challenge the Russian president, especially during monologues about Russian history that he used to justify his full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In one part of the interview, Putin made a factual error in describing an alleged encounter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, when according to the Kremlin website, Carlson asked him about whether the Ukrainian president had "the freedom to negotiate a resolution to this conflict."

Putin replied: "It's difficult for me to judge" and he said that Zelensky's "father fought against the fascists, the Nazis, during World War II."

One of the justifications Putin has given for the war he started was to rid Ukraine of Nazis, whose alleged presence and influence has been dismissed as nonsense by Kyiv and the international community.

Putin continued: "Once I talked to him about this. I said, 'Volodya, what are you doing? Why do you support neo-Nazis in Ukraine today when your father fought against fascism?' where during what Moscow calls the Great Patriotic War fought by the USSR against Germany, he was a "a front-line soldier."

Zelensky's father, Oleksandr was not born until 1947, two years after the war ended, although his father—the Ukrainian president's grandfather, Semyon, did fight, investigative Russian language outlet Agentstvo noted.
