You might want to hide the keys to your place. He's gonna be missing all that locking up the population in death camps and may want an outlet for his prior vocation.

Congrats! Did he get a big party?
Re: The View From Maybelot
We went into FEMA headquarters today. Since they lifted the restrictions it was the first time a lot of the people were able to see each other in person. It was very nice. It was actually pretty emotional. But it was lots of fun!

Re: The View From Maybelot
We hosted the annual Folk Club of Reston-Herndon Memorial Day Campout here at Maybelot this weekend. We had over fifty different people here (not all at once - folks came and went, but 25 or so consistently). We played music and sang and talked and ate and drank and ate and ate and ate. Some people traveled many miles to come here. We had three RVs and one person camping in a tent. All the bedrooms at the main house and the cabin were full. Some folks stayed in hotels nearby. Some just came for the day.
It was fabulous. I think a Fogbow Meetup, Appalachian Edition, is a possibility, maybe next year or the year after.

I don't need much of an excuse to come down to that part of the country!

Well, maybenaut, to my complete and utter surprise, a ridge and valley future is not out of the running in the retirement stakes. It’s the music piece for him.
When you host the meetup we’ll come.

Re: The View From Maybelot
That would make me soooooooo happy!!! Look at my fb page to see scenes from the music campout. Mr. 520 might recognize a few from Swannanoa.

Drag your bed out on one of those decks and sleep under the stars!

Thanks! I would have done that if it hadn’t been pouring rain!
It’s been raining pretty heavily here for the last couple of days, so it’s not unusual for a tree to come down and take out the power lines. I don’t know how long it was out. I woke up at 5:30 and it was back on.

You're in coal country, and got plenty of trees. Build a steam driven generator!

Coal country? There must be much free scrubbed energy available since the former guy made it happen
Re: The View From Maybelot
I thought coal country these days meant strip-mining. (makes the landscape look wonderful)

Re: The View From Maybelot
Strip mining’s better than what they mostly do these days, which is mountain top removal. The WHOLE FUCKING TOP. All the downstream streams are screwed, the water is undrinkable. Coal is a killer.
Re: The View From Maybelot
Have you seen the size of our roof?! We’re going solar. But we’ll be grid-tied, so if the grid is down, so are we.
The amount of batteries we’d need are too spendy - we may do a battery back-up later on, but I think a whole-house generator is more the likely option for us. We have a small Honda generator, but it’s down in the cabin and I didn’t want to go down there in the rain to get it. Easier just to go to bed (the bedroom was still pretty cool).
