HISD to eliminate librarians, turn libraries into discipline centers at 28 campuses

Houston Independent School District will be eliminating librarian positions at 28 schools this upcoming year and converting the libraries into ‘Team Centers” where kids with behavioral issues will be sent, the district announced.

This comes as part of the new superintendent Mike Miles reform program, New Education System (NES). Currently, there are a total of 85 schools that have joined Miles’ program, and of those, 28 campuses will lose their librarians. The district said they will have the opportunity to transition to other roles within the district.

The remaining 57 NES schools’ librarians will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, according to the district.

Retired HISD Teacher in Charge of Library, Lisa Robinson, believes the library is full of some of the greatest stories ever told.

“It was such a joy to help them find the perfect book,” said Robinson.

She said those stories are now ripped to shreds.

“My heart is just broken for these children that are in the NES schools that are losing their librarians,” said Robinson.

What’s not funny is the injuries and even deaths it sounds like that resulted from this asinine stunt.

From the Houston Chronicle article above:

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/politi ... _TexasTake
Abbott’s attorneys had argued that the barriers were not the type of structure that needed review by the Army Corps. In addition, they claimed that the Rio Grande, despite being one of the largest rivers in America, doesn't count as a navigable waterway because it doesn't include commercial shipping.

Judge David A. Ezra wasn’t moved by either argument, granting the Justice Department’s request that Abbott remove the barriers by Sept. 15.

Ezra said Congress determined long ago that the Rio Grande was navigable and no other body can change that designation.

"Once a water is found to be navigable by Congress, it remains so until Congress, not the courts, declares otherwise," Ezra wrote.

In addition, Ezra disputed the state's claim that the buoys were not subject to the federal Rivers and Harbors Act, saying the "floating barrier interferes with or diminishes the navigable capacity."
Sounds like a job for Rafael Cruz, get Congress to declare the river unnavigable.

The right loves to use immigration issues to pander to their base, and yet the GOP-led Congresses have never passed or introduced any immigration reform, stricter rules, or extra funding to help increase enforcement, including never funding Trump laws.

If they were serious about immigration, they would actually do something in the one place you can make a difference: Congress.

They have not. All of it is window-dressing for the racists and bigots in their base. They have no intention of fixing it because their money base needs the undocumented folks working for them.

Gut-wrenching images taken by The Post show migrant toddlers crawling through razor wire to reach Eagle Pass, Texas, howling in pain as spikes from the wire stick into their flesh.

The photos capture the sheer desperation of the humanitarian crisis playing out on the border, with families and even a double amputee crawling through the sharp coils of wire to get a shot at claiming asylum in the US.

Texas Seizes Large Sanctuary Island in Campaign Against Cartels

By Todd Bensman
on October 11, 2023

NEAR FRONTON, Texas — Dawn was breaking on Monday as a Texas Rangers commander spoke to a heavily armed assembly of state police and Texas military personnel, much like a World War II military commander pep-talking soldiers about to invade an enemy-held Pacific Island.

It so happened that the Texans also were about to invade an enemy-held island, this one being a 170-acre, mile-long land mass in the middle of the Rio Grande. The declared enemy: ultra-violent Mexican cartels that have occupied and used it with impunity to smuggle cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, weapons, and illegal immigrants, all while shooting at American cops, riddling Border Patrol boats with bullets, and intimidating Texas farmers, ranchers, and the 180 residents of the isolated Texas riverfront village of Fronton.

ABBOTT FAILS ON VOUCHERS. AGAIN.

https://www.texasobserver.org/abbott-fa ... ers-again/
He threatened. He baited. But no amount of sticks or carrots helped Texas Governor Greg Abbott pass school vouchers—a means of redirecting public dollars to private institutions—during a third special legislative session he had explicitly called to see his pet project passed. After the state House twice rejected vouchers in the regular 88th legislative session, Abbott failed to persuade lawmakers. Again.

Last Tuesday, Abbott made a fourth-quarter effort to pass vouchers when he announced he had struck a deal with House leadership. “Working with Speaker [Dade] Phelan and his House leadership team, the Speaker and I reached an agreement on school choice for Texas families,” Abbott said.

But after Phelan dismissed House members Wednesday evening without any discussion of voucher proposals and announced a return Monday or Tuesday, when the session ends, it was clear: School vouchers are dead in Texas. For now.

“The House has rules, and we are up against the timeline,” GOP Representative Brad Buckley, chairman of the House Committee on Public Education, told reporters after the House met on Wednesday.

Abbott’s purported deal would have been more expansive than Senate Bill 1, passed earlier in the session, or House Bill 1, which Buckley had filed but was never referred to committee since it included school funding measures not part of Abbott’s agenda. Whereas the Senate and House bills restricted the number or types of students who would be eligible, Abbott’s alleged bargain would set up a universal voucher program where all Texas school-aged children would be eligible to receive $10,400 per year.

Justice Department sues Texas over law that would let police arrest migrants who enter US illegally
The lawsuit asks a federal court in Austin to declare the Texas law unconstitutional. It calls the measure a violation of the Supremacy Clause, which establishes that federal laws in most cases supersede state law.

"Texas cannot run its own immigration system," the Justice Department states in the lawsuit. “Its efforts, through SB 4, intrude on the federal government’s exclusive authority to regulate the entry and removal of noncitizens, frustrate the United States’ immigration operations and proceedings, and interfere with U.S. foreign relations.”

Since April 2022, Abbott has ordered to send buses with immigrant passengers to Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver and Los Angeles, sometimes mocking those cities’ leaders for saying they welcome immigrants and criticizing the Biden administration’s policies on immigration.

In total, Texas has bused over 80,000 people from border cities to those six cities, according to the governor’s office. Tuesday’s flight was the first time Texas has used planes to transport immigrant passengers.

According to a report by WTTW, a Public Broadcasting Service member TV station in Chicago, city officials there have cracked down on some of the bus drivers coming from Texas, saying they’ve ignored municipal rules on where to drop off the passengers. Last week, the city impounded a bus because the driver was not licensed to transport passengers.

"Because [Chicago] Mayor [Brandon] Johnson is failing to live up to his city's ‘Welcoming City’ ordinance by targeting migrant buses from Texas, we are expanding our operation to include flights to Chicago, like the Biden Administration has been doing across the country,” said Andrew Mahaleris, a spokesperson for Abbott. “Until President Biden steps up and does his job to secure the border, Texas will continue taking historic action to help our local partners respond to this Biden-made crisis.”

Abbott is ignoring that the busses are not dropping off the migrants in Chicago but instead leaving them in the suburbs, sometimes at Metra stations.
