Having a January Sixxer as Speaker would be, I'd like to say unfathomable, but I'm fathoming it! It would be bad. Really bad.

Fox News’s Bret Baier will host a televised forum for the three candidates for Speaker of the House — an unusual move that follows Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) unprecedented ouster as Speaker.

House Majority Leader Scalise (R-La.), House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Republican Study Committee Chairman Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) would participate in the event on Monday at 6 p.m. EST.

The televised forum reflects the highly unusual nature of the race to replace McCarthy — and the intense public interest it is garnering. Though it will be televised nationally, the only people who may cast a ballot for Speaker are members of the House. :snippity:

It was a bad idea to begin with.

But this all sounds like a rerun of January. I predict a majority of the conference will back Scalise, but the Sore Losers Conference will deny him a majority of the House vote.

It was a bad idea, that's why I liked it so much for them!

You don't think tfg's golden endorsement is going to push Jordan over the top?

I wonder what the Vegas over/under will be for the number of ballots it will take before the pubs realize they are getting nowhere fast and the public is getting tired of their childish games? I say go for 30! Break the record for incompetence.

No. The conference is going to hash it out behind closed doors. I predict Jordan won't get a majority of the conference's votes. So the conference will publicly endorse Scalise.

But the sore losers are going to leak what happened at the conference meeting, in an effort to embarrass/threaten people into voting for Jordan anyway. And some, but not enough, will cave and vote for Jordan.

(My WAGs, of course.)

I dunno why the Republicans don’t go large. Someone should nominate Dennis Hastert, who checks all the boxes:

Former coach

Serious perv

Many more years of experience than Gym Jordan

And he is out of the slammer and ready to go.

McCarthy is arrogant or stupid, or both, especially if he thought Democrats would support him after he lied repeatedly. Then he lied after he got dumped. And this was based on rules set up to ensure he'd get dumped. Did he ever convince himself he was going to come out a winner?

CNN reporting on air right now that McCarthy is expected to step down from Congress. Not immediately, but it's supposed to happen.

Politico article on that.
Kevin McCarthy considers resigning from the House before the end of his term
The deposed former speaker has made clear he plans to stay at least through the speakership election before ending his House career, two people familiar with the matter tell POLITICO.

Newsom should delay special election to replace McCarthy until November 2024. ;)

There would be a special election:
In the case of a vacancy in a congressional or legislative office, the Governor shall issue a writ of election, within 14 calendar days of the occurrence of the vacancy, calling a special election to fill the vacancy in accordance with Elections Code Section 10703.

No; the governor calls a special election for the district's voters to elect a replacement.

Given the redness of the district, I would not be surprised if Newsom took a page from other governors and gamed the timing of the election, to lengthen the vacancy.

My WAG is March, and will coincide with the primary for the remainder of Butler's term.

If he's not gone by the special speaker vote, how funny would it be if he voted with the Democrats just to fuck with Gaetz, etc. It's not like he's got a future career in politics.
