I don't think the EU has approved it yet. When Zuckerman is your savior, you're screwed.

In the EU it's not only about the personal info that must be kept safe, but also about moderating the content and blocking the worst of the worst.

How is Twitter staying available there, given their descent into the cess pool?

Unfortunately it takes time for court cases to progress...

eg
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/germa ... te-speech/
Germany's Federal Office of Justice has reportedly started proceedings to investigate hate speech complaints regarding Twitter.
On April 4, 2023, Germany's Federal Office of Justice announced proceedings to determine whether it should take Twitter to court for allegedly violating hate speech laws. TechCrunch estimated that, if the matter were to go to court and the court ruled against the social media platform, the penalties could cost Twitter €30 billion. However, as of April 12, the social media company had not been fined that amount by the German government.

IIRC Twitter has its European HQ in Ireland. Certain jurisdiction would be from there. At this time I only know about the issues with staff contract law, eg the firing of last year. In the EU the European Commission will speak out. They take extraorinarily long, like 2 years to publicly (re-)act. One does not know what goes on behind closed doors. And as I peeked ahead, national police may take on companies as to their local interpretation, in Germany that would be espacially refering to Nazism and hate against Jews.

Yay. Have been waiting for the web version to use it, wouldn't download it on my phone.

Threads to launch web version, one of its largest updates yet
August 21, 2023 in News

Threads, Meta’s text-based app that directly competes with X, formerly Twitter, is unveiling its newest feature early this week — a web version. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced the update on Friday, saying it was already being tested internally, The Wall Street Journal reported. Previously, users could not use all the app’s features on the web and had to rely on their smartphones for full capabilities. “We’ve been using an early version internally for a week or two,” Mosseri said in a Threads comment. “Still needs some work before we can open it up to everyone though…”

Threads’ launch has been generally successful, gaining over 100 million users in its first week, but has also had issues from the jump. SimilarWeb, which tracks traffic on different websites, found in late July, using data from Android users, that fewer and fewer people were active on Threads since its first weeks. According to their data, on its highest traffic day, July 7, there were 49 million daily active users worldwide on Androids; the next week, there were only 23.6 million active daily users. The 23.6 million figure is about a quarter of X’s daily audience.

As Threads attempts to catch up with X, more updates have been promised by Mosseri and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in recent weeks, including improved search capabilities. Other updates have already been delivered, like post notifications for specific accounts and the construction of a chronological feed. Users on Threads have been asking for more features, too.

“GIVE US SCHEDULING!!! – Every social media/comms person,” said one user.

Another requested the ability to have “light” and “dark” modes like X has.

Threads did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider sent outside of regular business hours.

Threads To Block Chronological Feeds To Maintain Censorship Control

By Didi Rankovic
Posted Issue: December 4, 2023 1:39 pm

Remember Threads – the app launched by Meta (Instagram) as a Twitter clone, just as the legacy media were ramping up anti-Twitter (X) sentiment and hoping to sway users away from that platform?

Some data shows that as many as 80 percent of those who initially signed up for Threads have in the meantime indeed forgotten about it, and new statements coming from the top Instagram exec might be a good reason for those who haven’t done it yet to stop using the app.

Namely, Adam Mosseri believes that allowing Threads users to filter search results as they wish is a bad idea. This is seen by critics as effectively introducing yet another nuance of censorship.

The logic, if any, behind it, is that the option to have access to search results sorted chronologically would “create a substantial safety loophole.”

Not even a Verge reporter was clear on what that explanation was even supposed to mean. So they quizzed Mosseri in the comments, and this is the “clarification” the Instagram boss offered:

“Having a comprehensive list of *every* post with a specific word in chronological order inevitably means spammers and other bad actors pummel the view with content by simply adding the relevant words or tags.”

Not Threads, but Meta. Is there a better thread for this? Have 'we' already seen the start of this particular saga in another thread?

Meta to fight criminal charges brought by Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest over alleged cryptocurrency ad scam

I don't know about you Yankieland livers, but down her in Oz we used to get these scam messages to buy crypto-shit ALL THE TIME, on just about EVERY platform in existence - not just Meta. They infested PoliticUSA and search results like crazy.
They would boast some idiotic headline about the secret some Ozzie based celebrity used to get rich, or tries to hide from everybody, or some such. And they would use a photo of that celebrity to lend it credence. Of course the ad didn't have anything to do with the celebrity and didn't have any permission to use they image or name either. Ziggy was one, Dick Smith another. I seem to remember an Aussie sports star and maybe a singer?

I used to complain to Google about it. It would disappear for 5, 10, maybe 15 minutes. Then it would be back, except they had changed the letter 'c' with 'ç' so the algorithm would think its an entirely new ad. Its maddening.

I predict Twiggy is gonna make bank - well he SHOULD make bank, not that he needs it mind you, and not that I think he's a nice deserving fellow or anything. But these guys are assholes and deserve to PAY.
Has everybody heard about the bird?

I cant find the twitter thread (Twitter is apperently too common a word now, as is Musk) so I'll drop this here.

Fewer people are using Elon Musk’s X as the platform struggles to attract and keep users, according to analysts

X usage has declined as downloads of Threads have surged in recent weeks.

The number of people using X daily is falling, more than a year after tech billionaire Elon Musk bought the app formerly known as Twitter.

Data from two research firms and figures published by Musk and X suggest a deteriorating situation for X by some metrics. Musk has marketed it as the world’s “town square,” but in number of users it continues to lag far behind social media rivals that focus on video, such as Instagram and TikTok.

In February, X had 27 million daily active users of its mobile app in the U.S., down 18% from a year earlier, according to Sensor Tower, a market intelligence firm based in San Francisco. The U.S. user base has been flat or down every month since November 2022, the first full month of Musk’s owning the app, and in total it’s down 23% since then, Sensor Tower said.

The numbers were nearly as bad worldwide, as daily active users on the mobile app fell to 174 million in February, down 15% from a year earlier, the firm said. The worldwide user base has been flat or down every month during Musk’s tenure began except one, when it grew slightly in October and then resumed falling, according to Sensor Tower.

Other social media apps experienced modest increases in their worldwide user bases during the same period, according to the research, with Snapchat growing 8.8%, Instagram 5.3%, Facebook 1.5% and TikTok 0.5%. Those apps all experienced declines over that period in the U.S., but none was as steep as the decline on X.

X had “the most material decline in active users compared to its peers,” Abe Yousef, a senior insights analyst at Sensor Tower, wrote in a research report.

“This decline in X mobile app active users may have been driven by user frustration over flagrant content, general platform technical issues, and the growing threat of short-form video platforms,” he wrote.
