At the moment they are shown saying that they are not sinking.
However the ship on which they are standing is sinking. It is already more than half sunk. The rest must inevitably soon follow the forward part of the ship beneath the waves.
Kind of like saying you are still alive as the guillotine blade is falling toward your neck.
