This is actually a big topic here in the UK, as well, I'm told. Some of my local staff at the Embassy were discussing it with regards to some of their MPs today.Tiredretiredlawyer wrote: ↑Thu May 11, 2023 9:22 amWe've heard of the per diem scheme elsewhere. The per diem is a thing, but in the UK the MPs don't have to, and often don't live in their constituencies. If a Minister, who ifs first an MP loses his race. a lesser person of the same party will be expected to step aside in a race he won, turning the seat over to the party for the Minister who lost.Ben-Prime wrote: ↑Thu May 11, 2023 1:31 pmThis is actually a big topic here in the UK, as well, I'm told. True. It's more a matter of accepting the per diem for living in the Greater London area when they do not, or somesuch.Gregg wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2023 3:32 amThe per diem is a thing, but in the UK the MPs don't have to, and often don't live in their constituencies. Who knew a single state senator* can dictate policy for every county?
Bonus:
To party poop, SOSOAZ:
* I know, I know: both chambers passed it.Senate Concurrent Resolution 1037, which expresses a desire to restrict the use of certain electronic voting machines, is non-binding and does not have the force of law. Election equipment must be certified by the federal and state government by specific requirements outlined in federal and state law. That certification process is being followed in Arizona and all applicable election equipment being used in Arizona is certified. If those requirements or certification process were to be changed, it would require a regular bill to be passed by the legislature and signed by the governor—which is not the case for this non-binding resolution. We defer to the Attorney General’s office on all other legal questions.

But it gets worse.
Last session they raised the per diem for legislators who don't live in Maricopa county to $120/day, but left the Maricopa county legislators at $10/day.
I'll give you one guess as to which party the legislators from out of Maricopa county belong to versus the legislators from Maricopa county.
The AZ Leg. has two days scheduled to work between now and the end of August when they will adjourn. So what? So all the legislators get their per diem every day to the tune of over $400k getting stuck to AZ taxpayers.Yellow Sheet Report @TheYellowSheet wrote: The Arizona Legislature is piloting the two day per month work week.

Per diem, which is $238 for non-Maricopa types (mostly Rs) until the middle of May, when it drops to $119. It also includes weekends, without regard to where they stay. That said, their actual salary is a paltry $24k. It's all messed up, really.northland10 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 13, 2023 9:41 pm Do they compensate separately for housing during a session and travel to the capital or is that through their jury duty sized per diem?

https://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/news/co ... t-11532527Congressman Andy Biggs Coordinated Efforts With Mark Finchem Before Capitol Riot
Right-wing "Stop the Steal" activist Ali Alexander wasn't the only person that Arizona Representative Mark Finchem texted with the day before the deadly January 6 riot at the Capitol.
Text messages show that Congressman Andy Biggs was apparently coordinating with Finchem to gather signatures from Arizona lawmakers who endorsed a slate of fake electors from the state as part of the broader effort to overturn the 2020 election results. It's unknown if that's the same group of fakers who were caught in December sending a letter to the National Archives in Washington D.C. that fraudulently claimed Arizona's electors cast their votes for Trump. The real 11 electors cast their votes a week later for Biden, in accordance with the wishes of a majority of Arizona voters.
Biggs' communication with Finchem sheds more light on his involvement in the events of January 6 and the "Stop the Steal" movement by Trump supporters. Alexander named Biggs in a video as one of several Republican lawmakers who "schemed up" a plan of "putting maximum pressure on Congress" as members voted to certify the winner of the presidential election. Biggs has denied knowing Alexander or having any involvement in planning the riot at the Capitol.
The new information about Biggs comes from a series of text messages released on Tuesday by Finchem, a Republican who represents Legislative District 11 in the Arizona House of Representatives. In what appeared to be an attempt to clear himself of any involvement in the attack on the Capitol, Finchem released messages to the media showing him communicating with Alexander regarding his appearance for a planned speech at the Capitol on January 6.

https://tucson.com/news/local/subscribe ... adc38.htmlArizona Gov. Hobbs strips county prosecutors of ability to prosecute abortion cases
Gov. Katie Hobbs is moving to strip the state's 15 elected county attorneys of their ability to prosecute doctors and other medical professionals who perform abortions and give it to fellow Democrat Attorney General Kris Mayes.
And given the AG's views on the issue that could effectively lead to total decriminalization of abortion in Arizona as Mayes has said she won't bring charges.
In a new executive order Friday, the governor noted that the U.S. Supreme Court, in a case called Dobbs, last year overturned Roe v. Wade and its constitutional right of a woman to terminate a pregnancy. That, in turn, led to legal questions — still playing out before the Arizona Supreme Court — about what state laws can now be applied and enforced.
All that, Hobbs said "could lead to county attorneys across the state to make disparate decisions on whether and how to criminally prosecute the same, or similar, conduct relating to abortion care.''
"The state has an interest in ensuring that abortions laws are applied equally, consistently, and predictably to all people and in all counties in Arizona,'' the governor said in her order.
Hobbs is directing Mayes to "assume all duties with regard to any criminal prosecution of a medical provider or other entity or individual that is pending or brought in the future by the county attorney of any county in the state for violation of any state law restricting or prohibiting abortion care.''

https://www.azcentral.com/story/opinion ... 370202007/Cyber Ninjas (and others) should be investigated
Opinion: Arizona prosecutors should launch a full investigation into the scheme to steal Arizona's 2020 presidential election.
Laurie Roberts - Arizona Republic
Former Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley is calling for an investigation into the Cyber Ninjas’ Doug Logan.
This, for whatever it is Logan is hiding from the public about his audit of Maricopa County’s 2020 election.
Logan was ordered by the courts to turn over all text messages, emails and other documents related to his audit of the election, in response to a lawsuit filed by The Arizona Republic.
That was on Aug. 24, 2021.
