The article speaks about structural issues fifteen years ago. When I see the one photo, extra cars parked in the circulation area, not in marked parking spots. The parking may have been overweight. Pure speculation: this is NYC with harsh winters. I could envision that salt was used on the open top deck and damaged some suspending columns and caused rebar to rust out.

Divers find wreckage of experimental submarine built in 1907 in Connecticut
The Defender was built by millionaire Simon Lake and visited by Amelia Earhart before it was scuttled in the Long Island Sound

Associated Press in Hartford, Connecticut
Wed 19 Apr 2023 13.12 BST

Divers in Connecticut have discovered the wreckage of an experimental submarine built in 1907 and later scuttled in the Long Island Sound.

The Defender, a 92ft craft, was found on Sunday by a team led by Richard Simon, a commercial diver from Coventry, Connecticut.

Simon said he had been interested in the story of the Defender for years. He spent months going over known sonar and underwater mapping surveys, as well as government documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, to identify any anomaly that fit the size of the submarine.

“A submarine has a very distinct shape,” he said. “It needs to be 100ft long and 13ft in diameter. So I made a list of everything that was that long and there was one target on that list.”

Simon then assembled a group of top wreck divers. Poor tidal conditions forced them to abandon an attempt last Friday. They returned on Sunday and discovered the Defender on the bottom, more than 150ft down, off the coast of Old Saybrook.

“It was legitimately hiding in plain sight,” he said. “It’s on the charts. It’s known about in Long Island Sound, just no one knew what it was.”

Train derails into Mississippi River near Wisconsin community

https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/27/us/wisco ... _term=link
A train derailed Thursday in Ferryville, Wisconsin, south of the Lansing Bridge, according to US Rep. Derrick Van Orden.

At least a dozen train cars fell off the tracks, according to video that witness Caitlin Nolan shot.

Other images on social media, along with the video Nolan shot, show some of the train cars in the Mississippi River.

The Black Hawk Bridge that connects Lansing, Iowa, to western Wisconsin is down, according to a spokesperson with the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office in Iowa.

CNN has reached out to BNSF which, according to Rep. Van Orden, is the train operator.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Conservation groups have sued the US Federal Aviation Administration, challenging its approval of expanded rocket launch operations by Elon Musk's SpaceX next to a national wildlife refuge in South Texas without requiring greater environmental study.

Key points:
The Federal Aviation Administration "deferred" the typical environmental impact study to SpaceX
Conservation groups say this is the latest incident of explosive mishaps at the Texas site
Elon Musk says the launch debris amounted to a "human-made sandstorm"

The lawsuit comes 11 days after SpaceX made good on a new FAA license to send its next-generation Starship rocket on its first test flight, ending with the vehicle exploding over the Gulf of Mexico after blasting the launch pad to ruins on lift-off.

The shattering force of the launch hurled chunks of reinforced concrete and metal shrapnel thousands of feet from the site, adjacent to the Lower Rio Grand Valley National Wildlife Refuge near Boca Chica State Park and Beach.

The blast also ignited a 1.4-hectare brush fire and sent a cloud of pulverised concrete drifting 10.5 km to the north-west and raining down over tidal flats and the nearby town of Port Isabel, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

A CSIRO investigation has confirmed the location of the MV Blythe Star shipwreck, almost 50 years after it sank off the Tasmanian coast.

On the 13 October 1973 while making a routine trip from Hobart to King Island, the ship began developing a list to the starboard before taking on water and capsizing.

Ten crew members scrambled on to an inflatable life raft and spent nine days at sea in worsening weather before making landfall. One crew member died at sea.

The remaining nine attempted to walk out of their landing spot at Deep Glen Bay on the Forestier Peninsula, during which two other crew members died possibly due to exhaustion and hypothermia.

They were not rescued until 26 October, almost two weeks later, after a small group of survivors walked out and found a road where they flagged down a passing motorist.

No trace of the vessel was found for decades, despite a significant maritime search.

LONDON (AP) — Deep-sea researchers have completed the first full-size digital scan of the Titanic, showing the entire wreck in unprecedented detail and clarity, the companies behind a new documentary on the wreck said Thursday.

Using two remotely operated submersibles, a team of researchers spent six weeks last summer in the North Atlantic mapping the whole shipwreck and the surrounding 3-mile debris field, where personal belongings of the ocean liner’s passengers, such as shoes and watches, were scattered.

Richard Parkinson, founder and chief executive of deep-sea exploration firm Magellan, estimated that the resulting data — including 715,000 images — is 10 times larger than any underwater 3D model ever attempted before.
More coverage of the Titanic

“It’s an absolutely one-to-one digital copy, a ‘twin,’ of the Titanic in every detail,” said Anthony Geffen, head of documentary maker Atlantic Productions.

I thought the numbers were likely to go up. I'm sure that's not the end of it.

Desperate search for survivors as death toll nears 300 in India train crash

By Rhea Mogul, Sandi Sidhu, Teele Rebane and Manveena Suri, CNN
Updated 3:41 AM EDT, Sat June 3, 2023

CNN — Rescuers in India are scrambling to find survivors after a horrific crash involving three trains killed hundreds of people in one of the worst rail disasters the country has ever seen.

At least 288 people have been confirmed dead and more than 1,000 injured following the collision between two passenger trains and a goods train in the city of Balasore, in eastern Odisha state, on Friday.

But rescuers expect the death toll to rise further, as many people are thought to be trapped under upturned carriages.

India’s railways minister has said the country’s deadliest train crash in more than two decades was caused by an error in electronic signals that sent a train on to the wrong tracks.

Ashwini Vaishnaw said the full investigation into Friday’s crash in the eastern state of Odisha, which killed at least 275 people and injured more than 1,000, was still under way but “the root cause has been identified”.

According to preliminary findings, a green signal was given to the Coromandel Express train to enter the main track line but was later taken off. The train then entered another line, known as the loop line, and crashed into a stationary freight train, laden with heavy iron ore.

The impact of the collision, which took place as the Coromandel Express was travelling at 80mph, was momentous. The crash caused the engine and the first four or five coaches to jump the tracks, topple and hit the last two coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express heading in the opposite direction, causing several carriages of that train to also derail.

Four first responders who arrived at the scene of Sunday’s fatal private plane crash near Raphine, Virginia, told CNN the plane left a “crater,” and they believe it impacted the ground at a very steep angle.

The first responders, who spoke on the condition they not be identified, described a grisly scene. There were perhaps four recognizable pieces of wreckage from the plane, they said. “There was nothing really bigger than your arm,” said one.

They also found signs of human remains.

Federal officials are investigating the crash of the unresponsive plane that flew near the US Capitol region on Sunday, prompting military fighter jets to rush to intercept the aircraft before it went down in Virginia, leaving no survivors, authorities say.

A truck fire burning under an I-95 on-ramp has caused a part of the roadway to collapse and the highway to be closed to traffic by officials early Sunday.

NBC's Randy Gyllenhaal reported that officials on scene said they’re investigating after the northbound side on I-95 collapsed before 8 a.m. and the southbound side is "compromised."

Gyllenhaal said that officials told him, "the roadway is gone."

That couldn't possibly have collapsed from a fire.

That was OBVIOUSLY a strike from a submarine launched Exocet missle.

Notice how quickly the Coast Guard was on site to hide the evidence.
