Largest earthquake in 120 years rattles Melbourne but causes little damage
By Tara Subramaniam, CNN
Updated 3:17 AM EDT, Mon May 29, 2023
CNN — Melbourne was shaken Sunday by a rare and shallow earthquake – the largest earthquake to hit the Australian city in over a century – swaying buildings but ultimately causing very little damage.
Preliminary information indicated the 3.8-magnitude quake struck the northwestern suburb of Sunbury at 11:41 pm local time at a depth of 2 kilometers (1.24 miles), according to government agency Geoscience Australia.
Adam Pascale, chief scientist at the Victoria-based Seismology Research Centre, said the earthquake was the largest within 40 kilometers of Melbourne since a magnitude 4.5 quake hit in 1902.

Its been reported in the Volcano and earthquake and flood thread.
The 'biggest in 120 years' refers to the metropolitan area. This one was mag 3.8, and 3km deep. It was centered about 40km from the CBD. Didn't do much more than freak people and animals out. We may have had some lose tiles on the roof slide a bit, so I won't say nobody had any damage anywhere, but I haven't heard of anything significant.
2 years ago there was a mag 5+ about 150k from the CBD. That knocked a few brick walls down.

I like to visualize stuff.
But Australia has fewer people than California. The whole country has fewer than 30 million people (we have 330 million). Because, as we have studied, everything in Oz that doesn't say "G'day" is actively trying to murder you, 'specially the sneks and spiders.
Still, the opportunity for the future is limitless, in that big ol' place. I happen to have a map of the world on my shower curtain, and I sit in a place where I can study Australia. I gotta get there forealdo some day.

I keep tryin to convince folks that it aint the big things that'll get you its the little things.
Big things like sneks and spiduhs are more afaid of you than you are of them.
Its the little things like Irukandji Jellyfish that are really dangerous.
And, of course, the saltwater crocodile is the exception that proves the rule.

Although not quite the same way, most people don't believe that Alaska reaches from Maine to California.Foggy wrote: ↑Tue May 30, 2023 7:13 am I like to visualize stuff.

Two Australian cities have been shaken by earthquakes overnight.
Key points:
Two tremors have been recorded off the east coast of northern Australia overnight
Cairns reported an earthquake at 10.15pm, and Grafton at about 2am
There are no tsunami warnings
Geosciences Australia said a 4.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded about 10:15pm, 125 kilometres off the coast of Cairns.
A magnitude 3.1 earthquake was also recorded in the Pillar Valley, south east of Grafton on the New South Wales' north coast about 2am.
There have been no reports of damage or injury from either event although residents have reported the earth shaking.
(The Grafton one is ~80km away from me - at 2am I was asleep and didn't notice anything)

a 4.3 magnitude earthquake ..... A magnitude 3.1 and speaking about tsunami warnings - journalists "at their best" - that magnitude is not what generates any tsunami. Start with 6 to get some centimeters to a foot of wave, then you can start writing about tsunami warnings going into effect.
