This is becoming depressing. New Mexico was my top idea of a retirement destination, but there have been several incidents in recent months -- I am running out of affordable, no snow retreats.

It Texas. What, honestly, do you expect from Texas? This and pretty much this over and over.

My friend, on a cross country trip, was told ‘I don’t talk to queers’ by a server at a restaurant last week.

An old one. The Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue shooting from October 2018 has finally started, four and a half years after the event. They spent the last two weeks choosing a jury.

The guy escaped Nicaragua, escaped a kidnapping attempt in Mexico, and then was shot dead in the San Fernando Valley painting over graffiti. Heartbreaking.
Man Shot While Painting Over Graffiti to Pay for Daughter’s Birthday Cake
Juan López was killed outside an ice cream shop on his daughter's birthday by an alleged gang member in Los Angeles.

A 39-year-old father who moved to the U.S. from Nicaragua was shot to death as he worked to send money home for his daughter's birthday.

In a GoFundMe campaign, the family of Juan López says they are hoping to raise money to send his body home to Nicaragua after he was killed on April 15 while on a job as a painter.

As the Los Angeles Times reports, López — a father of three — was hired to paint over gang graffiti outside of an ice cream shop in Northridge, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles.

The man accused of shooting López is an alleged gang member who told police he had taken issue with seeing the graffiti painted over, the newspaper reported.

Per news station KTLA, the male suspect shot López multiple times in the chest with an “Uzi” type semi-auto handgun. Three other men were also shot during the incident.

López had taken the job to send his 9-year-old daughter, Brittany, enough money to buy a cake for her birthday — which is the same day he was killed.

"We are requesting your monetary support to repatriate the body of my brother Juan F López, who was the victim of a crime in this country when he was working as a painter," his family wrote in a translation on the GoFundMe page. "Everything in your heart will be useful to us at this time. Thank you in advance for your support."

The Messenger contacted the Los Angeles Police Department for additional information on Wednesday.

While speaking to the Los Angeles Times, López's sister, Ruth López Suarez, said they had been living together since her brother arrived in the U.S. six months before his death.

She said he fled to the country after he escaped a kidnapping in Mexico.

“He was so happy because he was going to earn that money to send his girl to buy the cake,” she said of her brother.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the family's fundraising campaign has garnered over $40,000 in donations.

Man shooting birds nearby cooperating with Spanish Fork PD after toddler hit by stray bullet; boy improving

SPANISH FORK, Utah, May 24, 2023 (Gephardt Daily) — Spanish Fork Police detectives have identified a man who was shooting birds in a field west of a daycare when a stray bullet hit a toddler at the fenced facility.

The 2-year-old boy, who was shot in the head, is stable and recovering, Spanish Fork police said in an update.

The shooter’s name will not be released unless he is charged in the case, the SFPD statement says.
:snippity:
The toddler was found stumbling and bleeding, and workers suspected he had fallen. His parents responded to the daycare and took the child to the Utah County Medical Center.

“It was not until at the hospital that doctors discovered through scans that the child had a small caliber bullet lodged in its head,” the initial SFPD statement said. “The child was then transferred to Primary Children’s Hospital for treatment.”

Bumper crop of toddlers with guns today.
Toddler finds gun in sofa and accidentally kills himself
The boyfriend of the child's mother told police he was "zoned out" while high on cannabis at the time of the shooting. He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

A 2-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself after finding a gun in the sofa at the family's home in Michigan.

The boyfriend of the toddler's mother has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Markus Nevills Jr, 22, objected to being charged at his first court appearance.

Nevills told police he had "zoned out" while high on cannabis and was scrolling on his phone when the shooting happened, according to a court filing.

"I don't understand this. I'm trying to see how they're saying this is my fault. I didn't shoot and kill him," Nevills said in court.

Kiaire McCoy apparently found the gun at the home in Kentwood and shot himself on Friday.

"It sounds like a terrible accident, and there is no criminal intent there," defence lawyer Richard Zambon said.
:snippity:
Not an accident, asshole. Negligence. I don't care that the guy was high, but there shouldn't have been any unsecured gun sitting around, regardless of whether he was high or not. It reminds me of the pool safety promos that were a staple of Phoenix TV for so many years, "it only takes a second," was what they said. You don't leave unsecured guns sitting around. Period. Especially when there are children involved.

A man has been arrested after shooting his roommate during a fight about eating the last Hot Pocket, police in Kentucky say

A man in Louisville, Kentucky, is facing an assault charge after shooting his roommate “in the ass” during a fight about eating their last Hot Pocket, officials said.

Clifton Williams got angry Saturday “and began throwing tiles” at his roommate after the roommate ate the last Hot Pocket, the victim told police, according to a court citation.

The roommate said he tried to fight back before telling Williams he was leaving, the citation said.

As the roommate was leaving, “Mr. Williams went inside the residence and got a gun,” the victim told investigators. Williams then shot his roommate “in the ass while he was trying to leave,” according to the citation.

The man at the centre of a suspected murder suicide in northern New South Wales last week had previously had his firearms licence suspended and guns seized.

Key points:
The two bodies were found in the Yamba home last Thursday
An independent psychologist determined Wayne Smith was capable of holding a gun licence
An investigation into the incident is ongoing

NSW Police confirmed while the gun found at the scene was registered to Wayne Smith, his licence had previously been suspended in August 2022.

It was then reinstated in December 2022.

The bodies of the 58-year-old and his 15-year-old son Noah were found at a home in Yamba last Thursday.

"The man's firearms licence was suspended by the NSW Firearms Registry after concerns were identified during the review of his renewal application," a statement by NSW Police said.

"As part of that process, his registered firearms were seized."

NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley said while it was a "shocking set of circumstances", an independent psychologist determined Mr Smith was capable of holding a licence despite earlier being identified as having suicidal thoughts.

"It's completely understandable that people are upset and angry and I concur with that, but it is difficult, you can't speculate on what affected his mental health in between December and now," Ms Catley told ABC North Coast.

9 people wounded in San Francisco mass shooting are expected to survive, police say

Sat, June 10, 2023 at 9:16 AM GMT+2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Nine people were wounded in a mass shooting in San Francisco's Mission District on Friday night, but police said all were expected to survive.

The shooting “appears to be targeted and isolated," the San Francisco Police Department tweeted. No suspects or arrests were announced, but police said there was “no known threat to the public.”

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the shooting happened shortly after 9 p.m. during a party hosted by a clothing store near the intersection of 24th Street and Treat Avenue.

Dying Breed, a clothing store located near the intersection where the shooting happened, was scheduled to celebrate its sixth anniversary Friday night with a block party, according to a post on the store’s Instagram account.

A person who answered the phone at the store declined to comment.

“This kind of violence on our streets is unacceptable. People should feel safe to go out in San Francisco without fear of being victims of gun violence,” Police Chief William Scott said. “Our investigators are working diligently on this case, and we will have a visible police presence moving forward in the community where this occurred.”

The Mission District is one of San Francisco's oldest neighborhoods, named after the Mission Dolores — a Spanish mission that dates back to 1776. Historically Latino and increasingly gentrifying in recent years, the vibrant area is home to numerous restaurants and shops.

Mayor London Breed said first responders were quick to react to the shooting and noted that “no lives were lost.”

“I know there are a lot of questions and concerns in the community, and people want answers," Breed said. "We are still working to understand exactly what happened and why and we will share information as soon as we can.”

The Tree of Life Synagogue trial closed today. Jury instructions start tomorrow. It has been beyond gut wrenching as we have heard the testimony on the news each day for the last two weeks. They have included numbers to call and agencies to contact if you needed something to help you cope with the details that came out each day. I think one of the jurors was dismissed when he/she could not handle the autopsy photos for all eleven victims.

Most of the families want the death penalty.

A truck driver who expressed hatred of Jews has been convicted of barging into a Pittsburgh synagogue on the Jewish Sabbath and fatally shooting 11 congregants in an act of antisemitic terror for which he could be sentenced to die.

The guilty verdict on Friday against Robert Bowers was a foregone conclusion. Bowers’ lawyers conceded at the trial’s outset that he attacked and killed worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue on 27 October 2018, in the deadliest attack on Jews in the US in American history.

Jurors must now decide whether the 50-year-old should be sent to death row or sentenced to life in prison without parole as the federal trial shifts to a penalty phase expected to last several weeks.

Bowers was tried on 63 criminal counts, including hate crimes resulting in death and obstruction of the free exercise of religion resulting in death. His attorneys had offered a guilty plea in return for a life sentence, but prosecutors refused, opting instead to take the case to trial and pursue the death penalty. Most of the victims’ families expressed support for the decision.
