IMO "Caligula" is not 'good' but not 'terrible'. Maybe 3 out of 10?

The production values were quite good, and the (non-porn) acting was good if you block out Peter O'Toole. The script was OK, not great, but was really screwed by the director and the money men. It certainly suffered by the intent of Guccione to make a 'main-stream' porno. Take out the heavy porno and it would be a much better (but still not good) movie.

Malcolm McDowell put in a fairly typical performance for him and just had overly wicked fun. Helen Mirren (who can do no wrong in my opinion) played it fairly straight and made the most of her badly written part. John Gielgud was late in his career, badly in need of money and just phoned in his part. Peter O'Toole was, as I understand it, completely and thoroughly shitfaced drunk from beginning to end - and it shows.

Huh, Helena Bonham Carter :lovestruck: could beat Helen Mirren in whatever the acting equivalent of a mud-wrestling match is!

Srsly, yes, Mirren  is wonderful and one of those actors ‒ as is the blessed Helena :lovestruck: ‒ who improves every production she acts in.

The post man lost a lot of what was central to Brinn’s novel and what it was saying about US infatuation with “survivalists” and would be authoritarians.

For many years, I just prayed that I would live long enough to go to a movie where none of the animals talked. :?

Dennis Hopper makes that movie worth watching...

FYI, The Thing With Two Heads is on Svengoolie tonight. Ray Milland and Rosie Grier are the heads. Despite the ridiculous plot, It’s actually a pretty good commentary on racism.

I think it was overhyped and went WAAAAAY too much into "the Indians are all good and pure and wonderful" trope, but it was a decent movie when i saw it... once, 30 odd years ago.

I preferred "Little Big Man," Dustin Hoffman's movie.

Ah yes, Dances with Wolves. Where I learned to mostly loathe Kevin Costner's limited skills as an actor. The only thing which made the 3 hour movie okay is that we 6 person college aged crew smuggled in a couple cases of bottled beer in with our trench coats (It was winter) and then the empties clattering around on the cement floor. Other than that, I don't remember the movie. :batting:

The first five to ten minutes were ludicrous, and it went downhill. You didn't miss a thing.
