:bighug:

Is that Laverne as second fiddle?
I think that is Penny Marshall. Yes.
Agreed. What a treat to see those two in the same commercial. :bighug:
I never knew they were a couple. :bag:

As I was fast-forwarding through a program I recorded this past week, I was remembering a feature we had on a VCR. That VCR, when playing a recorded television program, could automatically skip commercials. It wasn't 100% accurate, but it was pretty good.

I rarely come into this thread and today I realized why:

Jeez, pj is touchy. And more than a little passive aggressive.

I think the 'tech' behind that was volume level. Since TV broadcasts always insist on blaring the commercials at ~150% level of the main programming, it was easy to detect that spike equals commercials.

I always thought that was my imagination. Was that only broadcast, or cable too?

I don't notice it anymore.

It was definitely not your imagination. I don't remember if that scheme was used on cable channels as I was a late comer to cable TV (and now no cable TV).

And you are correct, I no longer notice it on broadcast TV. They finally wised up that consumers were pissed. I AM NOT GOING TO BUY YOUR PRODUCT JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE SHOUTING AT ME IN AN AMPLIFIED TONE!

Ya its true today. Its especially obnoxious when I visit my mom. As she is getting a bit deaf and she has the volume up, so its like the tornado from the wizard of Oz when the ads come on.

It's to reach people who go into the kitchen to get a beverage when the ads come on. Eat my mute button, fuckers.

Yeah, it definitely happened.

However, I believe that it was mainly the 'fault' of the local stations. The national broadcasters audio signal level didn't necessarily match the local stations audio signal levels.

So when the 'local commercial break' signal came through and the local station started playing Cal Worthington's "Spot The Wonder Dog" commercial it was gonna be at a different level than the national feed.

I could be wrong, but that's what I heard. These days there is signal matching techniques that solve the problem.

Oddly, about half of them ended up RWNJs.

Horse potatoes. There was no JFK Airport in 1956. :towel:

There might have been an Idyllwild or sumpin'.

There is also the other issue that they did not start building the TWA Flight Center until 1959, the year is probably later, after 1962 when they finished it.

for completeness, circling back to the "loud commercials" discussion earlier this month:
Q: Does the FCC currently regulate loud commercials?
A: Yes. The Commission adopted rules on December 13, 2011 that require commercials to have the same average volume as the programs they accompany. The rules became effective on December 13, 2012, one year after the date of their adoption. Broadcast television stations and pay TV providers were given until this date to be in full compliance.

Q: What does the CALM Act require the FCC to do?
A: Specifically, the CALM Act directs the Commission to establish rules that require TV stations, cable operators, satellite TV providers or other multichannel video program distributors (MVPDs) to apply the Advanced Television Systems Committee's (ATSC) A/85 Recommended Practice ("ATSC A/85 RP") to commercial advertisements they transmit to viewers.
