The underwater bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipelines last September was carried out by a team of divers operating from a 15-metre chartered yacht called the Andromeda, according to a new report.

The report in Der Spiegel traces the Andromeda’s route around the Baltic from its home marina in Rostock on 6 September to the German island of Rügen and then finally to the Danish island of Christiansø, close to the site of the blasts on 26 September.

Experts have questioned whether the amount of explosives used in the sabotage attacks, estimated to be several hundred kilograms, as well with the necessary breathing apparatus and other equipment could have been carried on such a small boat, raising the question of whether another vessel was involved.

Der Spiegel said that one of the six-person crew on the Andromeda was using a forged Bulgarian passport, but the German investigators have yet to identify the nationality of the bombers, or attribute responsibility to any government. A New York Times report this week cited intelligence sources as saying a pro-Ukrainian group was involved, but German authorities have warned about the possibility of a “false-flag” operations in which misleading clues are left deliberately to point in the wrong direction.

The Ukrainian government has denied any involvement in the attack on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which were built to transport natural gas from Russia to Germany, and are majority-owned by the Russian state-owned company Gazprom. They were not operational at the time of the attack, which came seven months after Vladimir Putin’s all-out invasion of Ukraine, but they were filled with gas, which bubbled to the surface, creating a wide area of visible turbulence.

The Spiegel quotes a harbour master in Rügen as saying the group that hired the Andromeda were dressed like normal sailors, and that he saw them carrying shopping bags of provisions to the boat, speaking a language that “sounded Polish or Czech to him”. He said there were several men and a woman.

The Andromeda is a Bavaria C50, a sailing boat made by a German company, Bavaria Yachts. It has five cabins and room for up to 11 people. It has a platform at the back to dive from.

At the site of the blasts, the Baltic Sea is about 80 metres deep, requiring specialist diving skills and special air tanks, one with a helium-oxygen mixture and one with pure oxygen, the Spiegel report said.

Every animal I've ever had knows EXACTLY when feeding time happens. They do not care that stupid humans are tinkering with 'the time' to suit the humans, they only know that someone
is messing around with breakfast/lunch/dinner.

I thought it was just me because I'm stuck in a bat belfry on a rooftop in London w/covid and a BIG headache that even Advil liquid gels can't kill. (My primary drug of choice for just about everything) It's really a very nice bat belfry and quite comfortable.

I thought it was just me because I'm stuck in a bat belfry on a rooftop in London w/covid and a BIG headache that even Advil liquid gels can't kill. (My primary drug of choice for just about everything) It's really a very nice bat belfry and quite comfortable.

You may well have deprived yourself by not watching the full 11 minutes. It gets increasing silly. But they are totally poking good fun at late 70s and 80s TV and film.

I guess it depends on which side of the bed you got out of...

Maybe. The bed is oriented N-S meaning the west side gets up later than the east side, but I don't think it's a whole hour differential. I'll need to verify that with some careful research though. I may need to write a procedure first, and then have it approved. Could be months before I get an approval. Oh, and don't forget the amount of time it takes to receive a research grant. I better get crackin.

Replace batteries? What is that? I haven't replaced a battery since like 2015 or 2016 (still test them, though).

Illinois this year started requiring sealed 10-year detectors. I was a bit ahead of the curve.

I use the extra time to change all the thermostats at the church and a few other timers that I am not even sure connect to anything anymore (though I learned yesterday that one still has power to it, oops). There are something like 10 various thermostats around the building (that I know of), and only one automatically changes for DST. There is a central controller for one part of the building that supposedly will adjust, but it is often way off anyway.

Christianity is filled with great mystery and sometimes confusion, but nothing is more confounding than the HVAC system at our parish. Ah the fun of 100 years of expansions and contractors' great love of over-engineering stuff.

I think we should always turn the clocks back. Twice a year, every year. No Spring forward. Always Fall back. Bit by bit, year by year, hour by hour we will turn day into night, and night into day. People will go to work in the dark, and sleep all day. Super idea.

Illinois this year started requiring sealed 10-year detectors. I was a bit ahead of the curve.

When we moved into this house two of the smoke detectors were no longer functioning and all were past the 10-year lifespan. I needed to add a detector in a spot where I couldn't hardwire it in with the others so I was looking for something that could be wirelessly networked too. The only thing I could find at the time were the Nest detectors which are now $120 each. I have 8 of them that are approaching the 5th year of their 7 year lifespan. I'm hoping to find something different that won't cost me nearly a grand before that time comes.
