In honor of African American History month, here is some organ music composed (and performed) by persons of color.
From the early 20th century we have a work by Florence Price performed by Nathaniel Gumbs
Next up is David Hurd, currently the music director and organist at St. Mary the Virgin in NYC, playing his own improvisation. His name is all over The Hymnal 1982, the current Episcopal hymnal
Then we have a piece by Adolphus Hailstork performed by Dr. Anthony Leach
And here is some more Florence Price. The song is introduced and performed by Nicole Keller

Speaking of Florence Price, last night Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance went to the New York Youth Symphony for the recording of music by Florence Price, Valerie Coleman, and Jesse Montgomery.

I loved this quote from the article and in the video.New York Youth Symphony makes Grammy history, becomes first youth orchestra to win Best Orchestral Performance
NEW YORK -- The New York Youth Symphony made history Sunday night as the first youth orchestra to ever win a Grammy, in the category of "Best Orchestral Performance."
CBS2's Jessica Moore caught up with two of the symphony's stars to talk about their historic achievement.
"There was an email sent out about being submitted to the Grammys, and I remember reading that and being like, um, OK, that's cool?" said 22-year-old Kennedy Plains, who plays the bassoon.
"Cool" quickly turned into surreal when the youth symphony, whose members range from 12-22 years old learned it was being celebrated among some of the most renowned symphonic greats.
Here is a video about the production before they were nominated and won."I always thought growing up that people who looked like me in the 19th and 20th centuries just weren't part of the classical composition sphere, so I loved learning about Florence Price and her works, including the piano concerto which we recorded. And having that previous mindset being proved wrong while playing a piece composed by someone who looks like me for the first time," Plains said.

Thank you, N10!!!!!!! Florence Price was an Arkansas native as was William Grant Still and Scott Joplin! All were skilled composers.

I could be wrong. Maybe I misunderstand this guy, but this song is in heavy rotation on Portland stations, and I've hated the lyrics from the first listen. He sounds like a pouting child feeling sorry for himself who can't get the woman of his dreams. So he wonders out loud if she will miss him if he were to disappear and die.
Damn dude. Cut it out. Grow the fuck up. You're not a child, and threatening your death is not the way to get someone interested in you. If anything, it will make them run the other way. Total downer. Start by thinking of her as a woman first, not a girl. Next, approach her and tell her how you feel. If she turns you down, walk away and find someone else. Don't embarrass yourself or her. Don't be a pest or a nuisance. Mourn your broken dream for a minute, and then move on.
Here's the lyric version of the song so you can read his words even though his voice is very clear. He has a beautiful voice, but his subject matter sucks. I change the station if I can when this songs plays now.

Here's Annie playing Orange Blossom Special. I think she grew up in the SF Bay Area and now seems to be centered in Portland...
