I was reading someone say on discord that its basically EU law that's keeping Twitter running. Musk tried to book his EU employees, but he had to keep them on as they have to be given proper notice due to EU Labour laws. And now its these EU employees that are actually keeping the twitter lights on as they are the people he has left who know how the system works.
But, while you can shortstaff maintenance mode for a while, eventually things are going to fall over and break. And it's clear there are problems mounting...
Here Musk is forced to try a workaround to a problem that needs to be fixed and would have been 6 months before.

Also too, European staff is protect from Elon Musk slavery laws that want his workers to go for 14 hours per day. Laws also call for predictable break times.Suranis wrote: ↑Wed Feb 01, 2023 2:43 pm I was reading someone say on discord that its basically EU law that's keeping Twitter running. Perhaps this will encourage more people here to move to a different platform.

Hey, ex-Tweeps: we've heard from many of you that Twitter's new PeopleQuestions form - the only way Twitter is allowing you to communicate with them about things like your missing paychecks, disability payments, and their other thefts from you, now includes a poison pill:
"By submitting this form, I acknowledge consent for collecting Personal information, I consent to not sharing this link with anyone else including other ex-tweep, and I will comply with the terms of the Employee Invention Assignment and Confidentiality Agreement ...
... (“Confidentiality Agreement”) I signed when I joined Twitter, including any non-solicitation or non-competition agreements, if applicable."
That's not something they can force on you. If you're not my client, consult with your own lawyers, but here's what *I* would do:
Just include the following language (or something like it) at the end of your free-text entered question when you submit the form:
"I do not consent to any of the things that your form suggests I consent to by merely submitting it. This is the only way you have made available...
..to me to communicate with Twitter, and so I am using it, but I am NOT thereby accepting the implied consent"
Elon seems to like his "one neat trick for forcing your employees into agreements they don't actually agree with" attempts.
You DO NOT have to accept the idiotic forced-choice framework he's attempting to apply. Remember that.

Some popular accounts likely to disappear from Twitter as Elon Musk ends free access to API
Move to pay-for-access application program interface continues platform owner’s push for revenue
Josh Taylor
Fri 3 Feb 2023 06.39 GMT
The latest set of changes to Twitter will likely spell the end of some of your favourite accounts, tools and features, as the platform’s owner, Elon Musk, continues to look for ways to increase revenue.
In a post on Thursday morning, Twitter’s developer account announced free access to its application program interface (API) would be cut off and replaced with a paid version from 9 February.
The API provides access to Twitter data, which can be used to create third-party apps, automated bots, customer service tools for brands, and enables researchers to report on trends or patterns on the site.
While many larger companies already pay for access, it is unlikely some of the smaller developers of popular tools and accounts will be able or willing to pay.
Here’s a roundup of some popular tools and accounts that could disappear once the pay-for-access API comes into effect.
When someone posts a long thread of tweets on a topic, often someone will @ the thread reader app, which will generate the content of those tweets in a more readable format.
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... ess-to-api?
I imagine that keeping the APIs working while making even subtle changes to the platform is tricky and has programming costs.
As the wheels start to come off the bus and there is a cost calculated to keep the much loved and used APIs working (and those with the requisite knowledge and skill are gone), Elon was not happy and basically said “Why should we pay to keep these APIs working predictably when we aren’t getting paid to provide this service?”
But, that was a major service or facet of what Twitter provided-an automated means of monitoring and posting. Many brands used that for customer service or maintaining presence.
For Science Twitter type user groups this is a loss.
He’s an idiot.
And, if he is going to provide a paid working API for the big money accounts, then the work is done for the free API using group. More likely is that the wheels will continue to come off and Twitter won’t keep paid accounts either.
All Musk appreciated and knew about Twitter was from the aspect of a sociopathic narcissist trying to manipulate society.

I don't think Elmo understands that the people who read and post on Twitter are the product, not the customers.

Elon Musk’s Twitter needs cash — and now the mega-billionaire wants companies and brands to fork over $1,000 monthly to get verified check-marks on his social network.
Twitter is asking organizations to pay $1,000 per month, plus an additional $50 monthly for each affiliated sub-account, to maintain the gold check-mark verification badges the company introduced in December, replacing the blue check-marks for businesses, according to social media consultant Matt Navarra, who tweeted the details Friday (see below). Tech news site The Information confirmed the details, adding that the pricing “is being finalized and could still change.”

(original: The New York Times)Musk Pledged to Cleanse Twitter of Child Abuse Content. It's Been Rough Going.
Michael H. Keller and Kate Conger
Mon, February 6, 2023 at 2:26 PM GMT+1
Over 120,000 views of a video showing a boy being sexually assaulted. A recommendation engine suggesting that a user follow content related to exploited children. Users continually posting abusive material, delays in taking it down when it is detected and friction with organizations that police it.
All since Elon Musk declared that “removing child exploitation is priority #1” in a tweet in late November.
Under Musk’s ownership, Twitter’s head of safety, Ella Irwin, said she had been moving rapidly to combat child sexual abuse material, which was prevalent on the site — as it is on most tech platforms — under the previous owners. “Twitter 2.0” will be different, the company promised.

But a review by The New York Times found that the imagery, commonly known as child pornography, persisted on the platform, including widely circulated material that authorities consider the easiest to detect and eliminate.
After Musk took the reins in late October, Twitter largely eliminated or lost staff experienced with the problem and failed to prevent the spread of abusive images previously identified by authorities, the review shows. Twitter also stopped paying for some detection software considered key to its efforts.
All the while, people on dark-web forums discuss how Twitter remains a platform where they can easily find the material while avoiding detection, according to transcripts of those forums from an anti-abuse group that monitors them.
“If you let sewer rats in,” said Julie Inman Grant, Australia’s online safety commissioner, “you know that pestilence is going to come.”
In a Twitter audio chat with Irwin in early December, an independent researcher working with Twitter said illegal content had been publicly available on the platform for years and garnered millions of views. But Irwin and others at Twitter said their efforts under Musk were paying off. During the first full month of the new ownership, the company suspended nearly 300,000 accounts for violating “child sexual exploitation” policies, 57% more than usual, the company said.
The effort accelerated in January, Twitter said, when it suspended 404,000 accounts. “Our recent approach is more aggressive,” the company declared in a series of tweets on Wednesday, saying it had also cracked down on people who search for the exploitative material and had reduced successful searches by 99% since December.
Irwin, in an interview, said the bulk of suspensions involved accounts that engaged with the material or were claiming to sell or distribute it, rather than those that posted it. She did not dispute that child sexual abuse content remains openly available on the platform, saying that “we absolutely know that we are still missing some things that we need to be able to detect better.”
She added that Twitter was hiring employees and deploying “new mechanisms” to fight the problem. “We have been working on this nonstop,” she said.
Wired, NBC and others have detailed Twitter’s ongoing struggles with child abuse imagery under Musk. On Tuesday, Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., asked the Justice Department to review Twitter’s record in addressing the problem.

(original: The Hill)Twitter execs likely in the hot seat during House’s ‘Twitter Files’ hearing post-Elon Musk leak
Rebecca Klar
Mon, February 6, 2023 at 10:50 PM GMT+1
House Republicans are gearing up to grill former Twitter employees at a Wednesday hearing, escalating their accusations that social media companies are censoring content with an anti-conservative bias.
The hearing is largely based around a slew of information dubbed the “Twitter Files” released by Twitter CEO Elon Musk after taking over the company last year.
In the data are details about who at the social media platform decided to limit the spread of a story about President Biden’s son Hunter Biden during the 2020 presidential race.
The tweets revealed in the thread largely showed internal debates among employees over the decision and lacked details of influence from Democrats. Nonetheless, it fueled outrage from GOP lawmakers, who are using their newly claimed House majority to dig into the debate.
“The dynamic, I’m afraid, is going to be one of castigating the pre-Elon Musk Twitter as having been in the pocket of Biden, the Democrats and the radical left,” said Paul Barrett, deputy director of NYU Stern’s Center for Business and Human Rights.
Democrats may have their own set of questions for Twitter’s former Chief Legal Officer Vijaya Gadde, former Deputy General Counsel James Baker and former head of trust and safety Yoel Roth. Most of them are likely related to Musk’s takeover of the company and overall handling of misinformation online.
Twitter, as well as other social media companies, has faced scrutiny on both sides of the aisle. Democrats have slammed Twitter over what they see as allowing too much misinformation and hate speech to spread on the platform.
Democrats, however, will likely “feel obliged” to counteract the “hyper partisan allegations” from Republican members, and probably won’t be able to “make a lot of constructive progress” at the hearing, Barrett said.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/elon-musk-tw ... 36687.html
Au contraire. All the portions of the hearings that I saw showed this hearing is blowing up in Republican's faces. That is why I was asking if we have a thread on it. I will watch the whole thing later on CSPAN, but I've watched some already. Republicans will likely be very sorry they opened up this particular door, Raskin and other Democrats are killing it on questioning. And, the people who are being questioned aren't particularly friendly with Republicans and seem to be answering questions quite honestly and have the goods to back up what they are saying.
